In that case, don't worry, it's an act. If you see them live, they don't
do the Spinal Tap kind of thing. It's just a bunch of guys on a stage
playing ska. And they're very good.

if you would stop listening to a band that you like becuase of their
religious affiliation, i question your "morals". in a country based on
freedom from religious persecution, we must be tolerant to others
beliefs. i got tired of ignorant people long ago and now i often tell
people im satanic just to piss them off (im not, anyway). one who has
not an open mind towards other's religious beliefs is no better than a
mindless racist.

they do it for shock value. and i personally dont believe in satan
because in order to do that you have to believe in god. i just think its
pretty funny how some people will go against their true feelings and do
what they really dont want to do because of some beliefs that may or may
not be their own. in any case its a good cd, i dont care how much of a
christianite you are, go buy it

First off I agree with skadanks viewpoint. In society we have seemed to
value things in ones life, which has no importantce to anyone. For some
people religon and morals are still valued, myself included. When I
first found out about Meph. I thought it was cool. Most of my friends
were woried about liking this type of band. It was not untill we did a
little more research to find out Meph was just a good ska band. The
stand-up bass rocks.

To get back to the main reason why I'm writting, for someone not to
support a consepect or Idea is fine. How many people in Germany during
WWII did not support Hitler? How many people did not support MLK? The
answer is many. Not to support does not mean to hate. On the other hand
I have no problems with Mike nor any person who doesn't believe in God.
That is your choice...it is not my job to make judgement on him...IT IS
GOD'S.

My question is what the fuck does satanism or even a joke about being
satanic have to do with ska? Isn't that more in the metal realm? Just
play the ska and skank!

Let's see if I can answer your question. Ska and satanism go together
when you are talking about Mephiskapheles, one of the best ska bands
around these days. In fact, even the part about it being a joke is
relevant to ska when we're talking about Meph. If you're implying (which
I REALLY don't think you were) that Meph is metal, you're wrong. But I'm
going to assume that's not what you were saying, and skank off to class
now. Bye.

Don't even start that again.

By the way, Mephisakpheles IS Satanic. In fact "Bumblebee Tuna" contains
hidden messages, if you play it backwards. I think they mention killing
your parents and eating them for lunch with a tuna sandwich.

The reason I started this thread was to see what Mephiskapheles was
all about. I have a $20 credit voucher from Dill records and I was
thinking about ordering the album through them because I heard it was
so good. But I would just like to know a little more about what
they're saying. Exactly what is it that they talk about in their
songs? Killing people? Drinking Blood? Child Sex? I don't know, what
does a satanist band sing about.

For one thing I said nothing about persecuting anyone. And no I'm not
going to have respect for satan worshipers. Why the hell should I? I
don't think fucking around with satan should be taken lightly. To be
tolerant of evil beliefs is in itself evil. Just as to be tolerant of
child molesters is evil. By the way if satan is the epitome of evil,
than why are you implying that racism is wrong. It would seem as
though non-racist sentiments are those that are moral. Satan would be
on the side of Hitler more than Martin Luther King. So no my friend, I
think its your morals or your a-morality that needs to be questioned.
I don't want to get on some weird tangent since this is a ska newgroup
and not a philosophy one. So if anyone knows whether Mephiskapheles is
REALLY satanic let me know.

Actually, Meph is satanic, not all the members but i know the singer is
really into it, a friend talked to him backstage at a show and said he was
a pretty down to earth guy, but was into worshiping the devil. he
apparently had a specific denomination an everything, but wasn't into
killing at random and all the other stuff normally associated with
satanism. As for their lyrics, they're about normal goofy ska stuff
(eskimo's, admiral stockdale, bumble bee tuna)) and sort of scary type
stuff, no real satanic propagand though.

Geez,
you guys are stupid. do you seriously think Mephiskapheles is satanic.
Sure, they sacrifice goats and babies on stage for fun, but don't we all.
Personally, i like a little toasted fetus and chicken blood my at ska
shows but that just me. If you know anything about ska like i do you'd
know that stuff like "Message To You Rudy" is full of subliminal messages
calling for the resurection of Lucifer. And if your as good a friends with
"The Skatalites" as i am you'd also know that their original name was, The
Satanites. It was the stinkin' record co. guys that kept sticking in an

They mention satan in some of their songs but otherwise they sing about
tuna, eskimos (sic), and various other topics just like any other band.

Satanism isn't relegated to heavy metal, or the like. Music does not equal
religion. Just because one worships Satan (yes, I know Mephiskapheles
doesn't) does not mean that they must play a certain kind of music. Music
doesn't have bariers like you put on it.

I love how half the fucking people in the stupid "selling out" debates
have educational domain addresses, like our friend d...@nwu.edu here...

If going to college isn't training for the biggest sellout ever, I
do not know what is.

You college kids are going to have nice health insurance, IRA's,
401K's, pension plans, BBMW's and families in 10 years.

I am a musician. I did not go to college. I have been in Mephiskapheles
for 7 years.
I have NONE of those things I mentioned above. After all these years,
I have nothing to show for all the work I have done, and all the
REAL tangible sacrifices I have made for my art.

I do this because I love it. But I want to have a life too.
And I want to make money doing it. All you fuckers that call me a
sellout, I will follow your good examples. After you finishe school,
go work at a volunteer job for free for the rest of your life, or
let's just say til you're 35.

If you won't do this, then go fuck yourself. And the person who calls
me a sellout better be ready to stand behind his words.

By the way, this tirade is directed at anybody who calls any musician
a sellout, not necessarily Darrin Pakravan... he just happened to post
on at the right time... Sorry Darrin if it applies....

Also, this is MY opinion, not that of Mephiskapheles. If you
got something to say about this, say it to me, not the band.

Here here. Bravo. Not to many of these kids realize how long you guys
have been plugging away trying to make a living. I think that your band
is one of the best ska groups out there today. I have seen you many
many times and have to say that barring James Brown you guys have got to
be some of the hardest working men in show biz. The sellout debate is
rediculous, if you don't like the music a band plays when they hit big
don't listen to it. By the way, I did graduate college and I don't
drive a BMW nor do I care to. I ride Vespas, go to shows, drink like a
fish, and support the bands that I listen to whether they are making
money or not. If these little kids would quit with their little "oh
bush is so cool and I am really upset that Gwen is going out with Gavin"
crap maybe they would see that most bands work hard to live a lifestyle
and be on a scene that they care about.

Well, enough of my drivle.

What about those University students who are just about (<1year) done
their degree, don't really want a "real" job but realize they have to in
order to be able to do all the other things they want to. Like in their
"off" time for the last two years they work with latchkey kids trying to
make their lives a little "funner" and in what little time they have
left trying to form a ska band cuz they've been at least somewhat
involved in music for the last 12 years and realize NOT being involved
in music (playing their sax, etc.) really sux, and working a cheesy part
time job at a video store to make money so they can buy lots of beer and
go see cool gigs on weekends. Oh, and see the re-release of the star
wars movies..
Gee, life is confusing. But since that was directed at those who call
musicians sellouts i guess it doesn't really apply to me. But since i
spent time wrting this i'll post it anyway.
