Triubutes are one thing. Using the exact sample, THE EXACT SAMPLE and just
adding a few Bass beats is another. People like Puff Daddy and WIll Smith
make their living off re-releasing old songs.

It's obvious that you don't know too much about ska. I understand that
ska is not hip-hop's only influence, (in fact, ska itself has no
influence on hip-hop whatsoever) but dub is a very major influence on
hip-hop music, and if it weren't for dub, hip-hop in it's current form
wold not exist. Dub laid the groundwork for scratching and sampling in
it's modern state. And, while I find some of the stereotypes by
Netweasel, (a person whom I myself have had several disagreements with
in the past) are stupid, I think the stereotypes you're making of ska
fans is pathetic, too. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, (although I HATE
mainstream hip-hop with a passion, give me Source of Labor or Black
Anger over any mainstream bullshit anyday) I don't have a mohawk, and I
detest drugs. It seems to me that you were saying you have to dress a
certain way to listen to a certain type of music. Well, that's bullshit.
If I misread what you were saying, then I apologize. This is much longer
than I anticipated, and I apologize for that, as well. So, uh, yeah.
I am not stereotyping. In fact if you read the thread, I said why did
someone post the crap about Eminem in alt.music.ska. Then someone
stereotyped ska.
Aaron wrote in message <3727D2...@cco.net>...
netweasel wrote:

> Point 1: Learn your roots
I'm well aware of the fact that early rappers were listening to U-Roy and
various other djs. The point is that they were also heavily influenced by
other things (Gil Scott Heron, as mentioned by someone else, among many
others). To say that Jamaican music was a major influence in hip-hop is one
thing. I still think that to say that rap had it's roots in ska, without
mentioning that this influence came via dub and djs, and without mentioning
other influeces, is an oversimplification. If you have some further insight
into how I could "learn my roots," I'd be more than happy to hear it.
> Point 2: Tell that ton the guy who cross posted the Eminem thing into

I would, except that he stopped after posting one silly, off-topic message,
instead of continually antagonizing other newsgroups.
Matt
Hmm...seems to me that saying all rap artists are murderers is pretty
stereotypical...
Well..dub evolved from ska but i believe he was probably speaking of *direct*
influences. You can't say that many hip-hop artists took their cues from
listening to ska.
Usually when people speak of influences they only speak of what directly
influenced the genre. If we traced everything backward we would of course, get
back to that African guy banging on sticks.
Correct. Hip-hop also draws a lot of its influence from soul, funk, and jazz.
And of course Jazz was around way before ska. I think that hip-hop and ska
have had similar influences. I think we had this debate before on AMS and
finally someone said if it wasn't for some African guy banging on sticks
thousands of years ago we would't have any music at all. Rap -- the lyrics
spoken over hip-hop was very heavily influenced by Jamaican toasting.

You're absolutely right. In fact, the "originator" of rap music, King Herc, was a
jamaican immigrant well schooled in the art of deejay.
Hey pal, just what are you trying to say about ska, punk, oi, jazz fans?
