===============Boston Ska Emailing March 4================
Holy Ska, what a lot of stuff going on....could be the biggest newsletter
yet...
Where to start... Well, Tonight the Pilfers open up for the Soul Brains (all
the original Bad Brains) at Avalon for an early show, but keep that tix stub
and go next door to Bill's Bar afterwards to get in free to see Cash, Big
Lick, and an up and coming pop band The Pills.
Friday, the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry comes to the Mid East on what is
call the Last Tour, I'll be very curious to see him, as he is crazy. Lee was
very influential in the early years in Jamaica producing and recording for
Studio One, and later Trojan Records. (He plays Pearl St Sunday w/ The Mad
Professor). If you have transportation (try the ride share forum at
http://www.bostonska.com) you can catch both the early 6 PM Reel Big Fish
show at the 18+ Roxy and still make it to the Met in Providence for the
Pilfers all ages show with Brunt of It and The Indestructibles. Also
Saturday, Bim and The Sellouts play the Claddagh in Lawrence (21+) while
Late for Work, Crypt Kicker 5 and the Know Nothings do an all ages gig at
The Sad Cafe in Plaistow, NH. Sad Cafe on Sunday afternoon (1-5 PM) brings
the Sellouts, Spiff 45, and Petes Garage. Looking ahead to next week, Big D
plays their final show before their California tour (more info below) at
Bills next Thursday with Mission 120 and No On 15 from Pennsylvania (18+)
Reel Big Fish hits Boston this Saturday at the Roxy for an 18+ early show
(6PM), which is expected to be over by 9:30 (In time to make it to
Providence for the Pilfers). The Roxy is located at 279 Tremont Street in
Boston, near the Theater District (Boylston Stop on the Green Line). You
can buy the tickets in advance and save all service charge at BosTix (with
outlets at Copley Sq, Harvard Sq, and Faneuil Hall) or get them through
TicketMaster or get them at the door. They are touring with Zebrahead and
the Teen Heroes. This just in from the Reel Big Fish camp: "Grant Barry,
trombone player with REEL BIG FISH has been asked to leave the band. The
band cited "personal differences". REEL BIG FISH are in the midst of a U.S.
tour and are not looking to replace Barry at this time. No further details
are available." Also, Matt Wong's has not been around for some of the East
Coast shows - he HAS NOT left the band - he has to go to a wedding!! - bass
duties are being handled alternately between Teen Heroes bassist and
Suburban Rhythm bassist.
The Kahlua Boston Music Awards have announced their nominees for this year.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are nominated for five awards: Act of the Year,
Album of the Year, Rock Band, Single of the Year ("Royal Oil"), Dicky
Barrett for Male Vocalist. (That's two less than last year). The good news
is that they have added a new category for ska music. In addition to the
Bim Skaward...er... "Outstanding Ska Band" category, they have added
"Outstanding NEW Ska Band". A great nod to the blossoming ska scene and the
realization that almost all of these new bands have little chance of beating
veterans Bim Skala Bim (who have won it every year, save one the Allstonians
earned). The Nominees this year for Best Ska Band are: The Allstonians,
Beat Soup, Big D & The Kids Table, Bim Skala Bim and Skavoovie & The
Epitones. The Best NEW Ska Band choices are: The Agents, The Brass Monkeys,
The Infamous Shoeless Joe, Dion Knibb & The Agitators, Kicked In The Head,
and The Sellouts. Good luck to all. Thanks to NEMO for recognizing the
depth of the New England ska scene. Also, The Pressure Cooker were
nominated for Best Reggae Act. Non ska nominees that may be of interest to
subscribers: The Amazing Crowns for Debut Album of the Year and Debut Rock
Band, And the Dropkick Murphys for New Rock Band. Check out all the
nominees at http://www.nemo99.com. The awards ceremony will be held at the
Orpheum Theater on Thursday, April 24. Public ballots are available through
March 19th in the Friday editions of the Boston Herald, or at area Best Buy
locations (MA: Braintree, Framingham, Cambridge, Danvers, NH: Nashua,
Portsmouth, Manchester, and Portland, ME)
The music awards are the start of the 3 night extravaganza known as the NEMO
Music Showcase and Conference which features showcases with over 200
bands/artist throughout all of Boston and Cambridge. Glad to say, there
will be an all ages NEMO/Skattering Music ska showcase on Saturday April 24
at the Greek American Club in Central Square, Cambridge. Although it is not
confirmed who will play yet, I have heard rumors that The Planet Smashers
were invited down from Montreal to participate. By next week, I should have
a list of all the other bands who will be appearing at the showcase. The
other aspect of the NEMO weekend, are the very informative music conferences
and panels, which bring in high caliber industry people offering not only a
valuable learning opportunity, but an incredible chance to network and
promote your band.
Kicked In The Head has just received their new split EP w/ The Goonies
entitled "All In The Family". The new cd (should be out in CD Spins/Boston
by Friday and other area stores by next week) features 2 live cuts ("Spring
Fever", "Churn It Up") from a December KITH show at Mama Kin, along with 2
new songs "Fix My Sink" and "Swing and Shake" recorded at Big Sound in
Maine, with Jon Lammi at the helm. The Goonies are Milford, MA punk band
with three songs on the ep. Look for several Kicked In The Head CD Release
parties around the New England Area. The cds should be selling in stores
for about $6.
Big D is doing lots before heading to California next week (good luck
driving) for some shows out there. They go back into Big Sound Studios in
Maine to record their new album this weekend. I'll let you know how that
goes next week. Anyone from California who wants to see the show from free
should email me here. The tour dates are below, one of the stops will be at
the Ska Parade Radio show, broadcast each week live from KUCI, live on the
web (http://www.rudenet.com/skaparade) from noon to 2pm (Pacific time). In
preparation for their journey, members of Big D will be making a guest
appearance on the Ska-Soca Chat room tomorrow night (Thursday) at 8pm
Eastern (5pm Pacific). Join Toobs, the host, Big D, and ska fans from
Southern California as they solve world problems. Go to
http://ska.miningco.com/mpchat.htm and be a part of it. Speaking of Big D
and the web, they have recently added some MP3s to their webpage including
new songs from the live broadcast a few weeks ago from WERS in Boston.
Check it out http://www.forkinhand.com/bigd
Yes, we all know that Boston needs and all ages venue. Well, we are getting
a step closer to that happening. Although not all of the details are in, a
couple members of area bands are planning on opening up a combination
record/clothing store and club. The club will be all ages, no alcohol, and
drug free. There will be a benefit (I'm sure the first of several) next
Sunday, March 14th in Duxbury at the First Parish Church on Rt 3A. Slated
to perform are punk bands The Dropkick Murphys and The Trouble, along with
ska bands The Brass Monkeys and Take 5. This will be the last show for the
DKM in the Boston before they start massive tour of the US (Their first
headlining tour!) The church only holds about 350 people, so the event
organizers are worried that some people may not get in, so get there early.
The show goes from 6 to 10pm and will cost $8. You can email me for
directions.
In other (non-ska) Dropkick Murphys news, their new album, The Gang's All
Here, will hit the street on Tuesday, April 16 (The advance cd sounds
great!) And they start their tour the following day on (of all days) St.
Patrick's Day in New York City at Coney Island High. There will be buses
going down to the kick off show in NYC, I am hoping to have a couple tickets
to give away next week for the bus ride and the show. The tour also
features fellow Boston band The Ducky Boys, as well as Oxymoron. Tour dates
below. (For all you ska readers, sorry this is not ska related, but this
information may be of interest to the 1,500+ people nationwide who signed up
for this list during the "Boston on the Road" tour which featured the DKM,
as well as Bosstones, Bim & The Crowns, and I am providing for a service to
them).
The latest Mining Co. Ska Newsletter
(http://ska.miningco.com/library/weekly/mcurrent.htm)
features an article entitled REINVENTING FISHBONE: A look at the persistent
survival of Angleo Moore and the legendary L.A masters of skafunkrastapunk.
Also, the Mining Co "mines the web so you don't have to" and discovered some
sites with MP3's. Go to
http://ska.miningco.com/msubmp3.htm to check it out. In addition to hosting
the Soca Ska chat (which Big D will appear tonight), they also host a Total
Madness Mondays chat every Monday at 6:00EST, 11:00GMT at
http://ska.miningco.com/mpchat.htm.

This just into Bostonska.com, the new tribute album to the Clash, called
Burning London. The album is an heartfelt example of current bands paying
respect to "The only band that mattered". Some cuts are great (Bosstones
doing "Rudie Can't Fail") while some others are "amusing".
Bands involved include No Doubt ("Hateful"), The Urge ("This is Radio
Clash"), Ice Cube and Mack 10 ("Should I Stay or Should I Go"), Rancid
("Cheat"), Third Eye Blind ("Train In Vain"), Indigo Girls ("Clampdown"),
311 ("Whiteman in Hammersmith Palais"), Afghan Whigs ("Lost In The
Supermarket"), Cracker ("White Riot"), Silverchair ("London's Burning") and
Moby featuring Heather Nova on "Straight To Hell". The album should be in
the stores the in May. In other Clash news, industry insiders also
revealed that Simonon, Jones and Strummer were on hand in a London studio in
December with uber-engineer Bill Price as he mixed "(White Man) In
Hammersmith Palais," which was recorded in Boston in 1982 and is said to be
the first finished track for the live album. The short list of shows taped
on multi-track that are being considered include the Lyceum 12/78 or 1/79
(date here uncertain but from that stand anyway),
Lewisham Odeon '80, Bonds New York '81, Boston '82 (two shows) and Shea
Stadium '82. However, so solemn is the musicians' vow not to reform that
they won't even consider re-recording or adding to any of the old tracks.
Providence's The Agents, mavens of traditional ska, reggae, swing, announce
their first US tour in conjunction with being nominated for Best New Ska
Band at the 12th Annual Boston Music Awards , to be held April 22nd at The
Orpheum in Boston MA. The Agents start touring at home in the Northeast,
head on South, and will work their way 'round the country, supporting their
debut Radical Release FOR ALL THE MASSIVE. Tour dates below.
For all you Madness fans. Here's the latest skinny: Their live album "Live
From Hollywood"
from last year's tour should be released shortly (originally this week, but
we will see when it comes out) and they are currently in the studio
recording a new album for summer/fall release. We are expecting some April
and May tour dates in select major markets (no word if Boston is included)
and they will be making some TV appearance include David Letterman the week
of April 26th 1999 and Conan O'Brien the week of May 3rd 1999. Their music
will also be featured in a national GAP campaign ("One Step Beyond") running
April - July 1999 and AT&T will feature "Our House" in a spring ad campaign.
A reminder that Skattering Music also offers the latest and greatest ska
music on cds. We carry over 200 cd titles, as well as patches, pins,
stickers, and a limited number of T-shirts, books (maga)zines and videos.
Email me to receive an email catalog or to ask for a specific title. You
can also see our listing on line at http://www.bostonska.com and click on
Skattering.

++++++++++++++Recycled News+++++++++++++
Well, we bid goodbye to Rude Boy Tuesday, and it went out with a great bang.
The Bluebeats played a great set of true roots/rock steady, including some
new material, which will be on their new cd (planning on recording in
April). However, it looks like ska will continue on a pseudo- weekly basis
on Lansdowne Street. Bill's Bar, "The Bastard Child of Lansdowne St", is
bring an eclectic line up on Thursdays to include ska, punk, rockabilly,
surf, mod, emo and more. Last week they had the Agents, this week, Metro
Stylee, next week Big Lick, then Big D/Mission 120, followed by Kicked In
The Head, the Allstonians, and into April. (See below for exact line-up).
Each week, a ska band is match with bands of different styles of bands,
giving fans of each genre the opportunity to see others. The shows are all
18+, and doors are at nine. Cost is $5 for 21+ with an additional $2 for
those 18 to 21. So, although it not a strictly ska night, ska is still
happening on a weekly basis, every Thursday night on Lansdowne Street.
Skavoovie & The Epitones just finished up their new album at Fort Apache in
Boston. It has fourteen tracks and is titled "The Growler". The band is
REALLY psyched about it, it being the product of countless hours of labor in
the basement of our Foster St. residence. Hopefully it will be out in May.
Skavoovie are looking forward to leaving on tour March 4 thru the 28. Tour
dates to follow soon.
Coming soon on cd from DVS Media: "The Shack Vol 2 - Club Ska ‘99 ". A
follow up to the 1993 highly acclaimed international ska compilation "The
Shack". This features 21 tracks and over 70 minutes, this features some of
the best international ska acts across the history of time. The Skatalites
(featuring Toots Hibbert), Rico Rodriguez, Bim Skala Bim, Allstonians, Dr.
Ring Ding & The Sr All Stars, The Toasters, Ngobo Ngobo, Derrick Morgan &
Yebo, Steady Earnest, The Porkers and lots more.
Take 5 recorded 7 tracks this past weekend at Kevin Micka's studio. Word is
that the tracks turned out nicely, and include a dub version of The
Skatalites' "Christine Keeler." The band hopes to be finish recording by
the end of the month. Track list and other album info. will be available
soon on their webpage at: http://www.skapunx.net/~take5/
Lots going on at Stubborn Records HQ in NYC: February 15th will see the
release of a Stubborn All-Stars best-of compilation on Sean Flowerdew's
Jamdown Records out of England, while Black Pearl Records (Germany) will be
releasing a vinyl version of "Version City" as well as two 7" singles
(Rocker T "By Your Side"/"One More (Version) and King Django & Rocker T
"Wayfarers's Prayer"/King Django "No Trial"). In progress at Version City
studio: Victor Rice's debut album is nearing completion. Instrumental ska,
reggae and dub from the renowned bassist/producer/composer with mad guests
including Headdie Ocampo, Agent Jay, Buford O'Sullivan (Scofflaws
trombone), Victor Ruggiero (Slackers), Freddie & Rick from NYSJE.
The Stubborn All-Stars will hit the reels at VC in April to record a 6-song
EP. This will be the first All-Stars release on Stubborn Records since
1994's "Old's Cool" EP. The Radiation Kings have completed rhythm tracks for
their debut CD. The youngest members of the Stubborn crew, the RKs have
been making an impression with their trademark rock-steady and skinhead
reggae sounds. Roots, Branch & Stem Volume 2 is filling up quickly, with
a submission deadline of April 1. Representing traditional ska,
rock-steady and reggae styles, this second entry in the series will feature
many new and exclusive tracks. On the comp so far: King
Django, Victor Rice, Dr. Ring Ding, Rocker T, Jack Ruby Jr., The Skoidats,
The Articles, The Radiation Kings, Rathskeller, Gangster Politics, Don
Khumalo, Justin Dillavou, Crazy Baldhead, The Stingers and others.
From Stomp in Montreal: The Kingpins released their sophomore disk entitled
"Let's go to work" in Montreal on Feb 13th. The disk features 15 killer ska
tracks including "Just One Day", "Johnny Rocksteady", and "Jack Ruby". The
album features a few stellar guest stars including studio ONE guitar legend
Lynn Taitt! The band will be on tour soon - check the stomp web page
(http://WWW.CAM.ORG/~stomp/) for tour dates. Expect a May release in the US
from Moon SKA. Also coming out on Stomp, Ottawa's ska sensation Rude Boy
has just come out with their first cd. Twelve great tracks including a cool
remake of "Sally Brown". The disk won't be in stores in Canada until March
2nd... but you can mail-order NOW from Stomp.
On Saturday, March 13, This is the first of a series of D.I.Y. shows that
have been organized
with ALL PROCEEDS going to the Pine Street Inn Homeless Shelter of Boston.
This all ages event takes place at the Medfield Pfaff Center starting at 4pm
with Mission 120, The Sellouts, Skarmy of Darkness, The Bad Larrys,
Malicious Mischief, and The Kookie Commies and cost only $6. Please leave
your booze and your attitudes at home. If something goes wrong on the 13th
that means no more shows there which means no more $$ for the people at Pine
St. Great all-ages venue. Great management people. Great cause. So have
some common sense. We will be doing a canned food and new/used winter
clothing collection and you will get $$ off admission if you bring
donations. Email Jeff...@aol.com for more info/directions.
Well, word has come in on the initial phase of the Plea For Peace tour, Mike
Park's follow up to last year's Ska Against Racism tour. Slated for an
April/May US tour schedule, bands that are confirmed for the entire tour is
Mike Park, Against All Authority, Swingin' Utters, Tilt and
Alkaline Trio. Also confirmed for different legs of the tour are Less Than
Jake, Link 80 and The
Planet Smashers. More info as it comes in. Also from Asian Man, the new
Stop Racism, the Anti-Racist Action Benefit CD. With 100% of the proceeds
going to ARA, this album is a great investment with 22 exclusive tracks from
24 bands including Bouncing Souls, H20, Mephiskapheles, Less Than Jake,
Suicide Machine, Toasters, and lots more. Support the great work of the ARA
and improve your music library!
The Boston Ska Website (http://www.bostonska.com) is being redesigned by
webmasters Tim & Will. In the meantime, the old page is up, with
directions and maps to the venues, links to bands, forums to find new band
mates and rides to shows, and of course, the latest ska update. The new
page will be going up March 20th and will include lots of new things.
(Please email us any suggestions you may have as well.) We are looking to
archive all the past Boston Ska Email Updates in a searchable format. The
mail-order and catalog will be more informative and easier to use. The
forums will be contain more information and be more accessible. Also, we
are putting together a picture gallery, so please submit cool ska pix to me.
The thing I am most excited about, though, is the appearance The Boston Ska
Archives. I've been going through hundreds of hours of live tapes and
finding the best live songs from the past several years. We are looking to
include songs from the great Boston bands, but also songs from national
bands recorded during their shows here in the Boston area. Still lots of
tapes to go through. Already found some nice cuts: Bim Skala Bim w/ Dicky
Barrett, Laurel Aitken (from last week), Bluebeats, Skavoovie from the
Warped tour, Steady Earnest (from The Boston Ska Cruise ‘98), Pilfers,
Spring Heeled Jack, Thumper, Allstonians, Big D and lots more. I would
eventually like to offer pictures and maybe a song from big shows that come
through in the future. Again, any feedback is appreciated.
