I'm putting together a CD of songs for someone's wedding. Can anyone
suggest a romantic (but obviously not mushy) ska tune to include. Any
suggestions?

try edna's goldfish.

and (lord, am i gonna get flamed for this) "Just As Much" by Regatta 69 (shut
hte hell up, it's on a moon ska sampler).

i will now try and think of some good bands.

"mona" by the toasters?

there's a bosstones b-side called "Together" that sounds like a wedding song if
you look at it in the right context. check napster. or i can send you lyrics.

a lot of songs i can think of are break up songs...but i have strung out stuck
in my head so that's not helping.

i'm useless.

Hepcat, baby, HEPCAT!!!

let's see...

Dollar dance is a good Wedding song, considering the name and the Wedding
tradition and all.
Together Someday works quite well.
The Secret, heh heh.
Daydreaming, from their last album.

These may be a little slower than you meant, but they'll still do the trick.

Well, the obvious candidate would be "Sweet and Dandy" (by the
Maytals, from The Harder They Come soundtrack and elsewhere?), which is
actually a wedding song. It also doesn't sound like much of the ska you hear
nowadays (if that's what you're looking for), and the lyrics are nearly
impenetrable. But it's still a great song.

Also, wasn't there an album of ska lovesongs released a while back
("Ska in the Key of Love" or something like that)? Maybe there's something
on that.

don't forget Rock Steady Wedding by Jackie Mittoo.

based ond the wedding march and "I'm getting married in the morning"

Mighty Sparrow's "Obeah Wedding" did a nice job when I tied the knot... not
quite ska, but what the heck - it was my party.

here's the lyrics:

Sweet And Dandy (Toots & the Maytals)

Ettie in a room a cry,
mama say she must wipe her eye
Papa say she no fe foolish like she never been to school at all

It is no wonder, it's a perfect ponder
Why they were dancing in that ballroom last night

Johnson in a room a fret,
uncle say him must hold up him head
Auntie say him no fe foolish like is not time for his wedding day

It is no wonder, it's a perfect ponder
Why they were dancing in that ballroom last night

One pound ten for the wedding cake,
plenty bottle of cola wine
All the people just dress up inna white fe go eat up Johnson wedding cake

It is no wonder, it's a perfect ponder
Why they were dancing in that ballroom last night

Sweet and Dandy, Sweet and Dandy, Sweet and Dandy, etc etc

the jackie mittoo track sounds like the best recommendation thus far... and
haole, how could you forget "rough rider"? for shame!... ska in the key of love
was pretty forgettable, except for the bluebeat stomper's "soul on fire" and
nysje covering "love and affection", of which only the former would be suitable
for a wedding...

You call those glory days? Your glory days are historically reffered to as a
pathetic time when all of the above mentioned assholes, along with folks from
the slackers, pietasters, lgb, moon, and of course that little cock nazi fag

balkanization of the ska scene has been wonderful. Learn to enjoy it because

The original version of "Rudi Got Married" was with The Unitone, released back
in 1980. He did a live verion with The Loafers that was released in 1990 or so.
He recorded 1 1/2 albums with the Potato 5, the second side of The Potato 5's
debut (Floyd Lloyd & The Potato 5 Meet Laurel Aitken) and a follow up album,
which has been reissued as "Rock Steady Party" (these two albums couldn't be
more different, the first is very trad, the second is...well Skacid.)

Now you make him start posting to Ams again. Was there not at some point
someone who went by such a name?

Got to go, the total needs to go in the diary case.

I was not aware they offered such a product at the supermarket. Perhaps it is
only a european thing? Maybe Billy will be a kindhearted chap and enlighten us?

They seem to be different songs. I'd never heard the Generation X song,
but after a quick listen it seems much more serious. The Lita Ford song
is just a goofy job sucks/get high/go dancing song.

He did record it live with them in the mid 80s though.

if someone wants a tune by laurel aitken, there's I love you, or its french
version je t'aimerai toujours.
judge dread also covered a tune by serge gainsbourg (a classic of euro pop)
called je t'aime moi non plus, that's french so that's supposed to sound
romantic, eh eh!
