There was a band from Long Island (I think - maybe NYC) called Skazel
Tov, but I think they were just a high school band that broke up when
they graduated.

There was (is?) a ska band in New York called Skazel Tov. The way I heard
it they were all Jewish and had Jewish-themed lyrics. Plenty of people in "the
scene" are Jewish too...the guy who runs Springman records is named Avi
Erlich.

Also, The Radiation Kings(us) feature the great Long Island super hero duo, THE
TWO JEWS, also from Et TU Brute. A few other RK members are jews too, but we
dont sing about anything related.

there should be a band called Skava Nagila, but nobody listens to me and i
can't start yet another joke band without much support. Skamitzvah! The
Circumcisions! Skalom! Rude Rabiis! Yamulska! Jeruskalem! oy... i could go
on, but it would just get worse.

well, they still have a web site up, and I don't think it says
anything about a break-up.

Little known fact: members of the Allstonians and a few other Boston bands
(who wish to remain anonymous) have an ongoing studio-only side project which
does Jewish ska/klezmer. The band name is "Happy Briss, Shlomo."

I dont think that the Jewish culture started a music based on ska and swing,
but okay.
i'm sorry, but i don't think that information is correct.
the only predominant "jewish music" in existence is called "klezmer". it's a
form of music that originated with the ahkenazim (eastern european jews)....
klezmer is the name of their instrumental music, and they have another name for
their vocal music (which escapes me at the moment).
considering the origins of klezmer date back to the 1500s, i very highly doubt
it could have been influenced by jazz (any form), swing, or ska, as all of
these musical genres became established in the 1900s.
klezmer's two greatest influences are -
romanian and bulgarian folk music (because that's the area where a majority of
the klezmorim (musicians of klezmer music) lived and played in, and,
gypsy music, since the gypsy kumpaniyi were predominantly the only prolonged
contact the klezmorim had with other people.
the two most widely used klezmer instruments are - the violin and the clarinet.
although today, any instrument can be used for any part, but most "traditional"
ensembles include percussion (a drummer and tsimbl (cymbal) player), bass
(upright being most common), violin, and clarinet.
