Wait. How do you spell sucks again??? "sicks"??? You are the one that should be reading the books.  ND does suck. I agree with who ever posted the origional message.  and I have a question for all of you No Doubt fans: Is ND Oi now because they did a cover of Oi To The World by the Vandals? No! They re-make an Oi song by a great underground punk band, give it a shitty ska riff and some horns, put it on a fucking Christmas album with bands like Blues Traveler, Sherly Crow, Tracy Chapman, Mary J Blige, and HOOTIE AND THE FUCKING BLOWFISH, and then it gets played all over the radio and MTV constantly, and in the video they all dress up like punks. How cool is that? I had no problem with No Doubt (or any other band that supposedly "sold-out") until they pulled this little stunt. Now all you ska "fans" that are running around singing lyrics to ND, Smashmouth, and other shit bands that are "ska" will be yelling Oi to the punks and Oi to the skins! Half of you never even heard of Oi before, no less know what it is.

You know, I like that song. And who cares who else is on it. It's a
benefit album. There's a lot of different acts on it. Give em a break.

ND sucks for those who have no knowledge in music. Their music
needs something more than ordinary hitbands like aqua, spice girls
etc. Especially punk is for people who use music only as a backround
noise, because they're too afraid of being in silence.

Since when is ND or smash mouth a ska band?

I dont know weather I'd call them punk or ska, but the album has some
good stuff on it. The same goes for Sublime and Sugar Ray. They are
pretty talented mainstream-type bands but as far as giving them a tag,
I'd just call them "rock" bands. I'd rather see them lumped in with the
rest of the boring meaningless crap on the radio then attached to a
music scene I care about.
On another note, has anyone heard No Doubt's version of Bad Brains
Sailin' on?

to it. Just Shut up about it! Let people listen to what they want!

No offense, but essentially you just jumped from trend to trend? And why
would you be dead. Don't give me that BS line that grunge is depressing.

Bring her brother back. I've listened to the first CD, and it wasn't bad. I
lost respect for her after "Don't Speak". The rest of the band is pretty
cool.

theres always going to be controversy (sp?) over whether no doubt is ska or if
they sold out or whatever. its never gonna get solved!!! you either like them
and support them, or shut up about it and like whatever else you want to like.

Didn't you know? Anyone who listens to grunge has to do heroin in order
to be grungy enough! Shit everyone knows that. The bands can't play it
right if the don't do it, and the fans can't be true if they don't do
it. But that's only for true "roots" grunge. You don't have to do it if
you're into like punk/grunge, or grungecore, or especially pop/grunge ;)

What makes Grunge Grunge? I was pondering this in the shower.. I mean
it's purty easy to tell the difference between Ska and skankin' punk but
what makes grunge grunge. SoundGarden (KICK ASS!) and Alice in Chains
always seemed to be way more metal and well I never liked Pearl Jam so...
But do you think there's an underground grunge scene, where there are
grunge poseurs and real grungies? And if so What the HELL MAKES MUSIC
GRUNGE?

Just Curious,

Mike Carey

Shit, good question. But if you think that's confusing, you should have
lived here (Washington) during it's heyday. And just try to imagine what
it was like to be in a ska band during that time. But really, it's no
different than what's going on in the ska scene now. The only difference
is that grunge had no history and ska does, so ska ain't gonna go
nowhere. Actually, there are a few buttrockers in the Seattle music
scene that are still trying to live the glory days of grunge, so it'll
probably re-emerge in another decade.
But anyway, to answer your question (as if you really wanted one) most
of the grunge bands were just metal bands. Alice in Chains was a glam
band before they were grunge, Soundgarden were a metal band with a
little NW punk flavor, and Pearl Jam were Mother Love Bone which were an
alternative glam band. Of all the Seattle grunge bands to make it big,
Nirvana were the only "true" grunge band, but the funny thing is that
they were just a punk band with that heavy NW sound, and they were from
Olympia not Seattle. Olympia was where Nirvana really developed their
sound and they were heavily influenced by all the Olympia punk bands.
Grunge was just a marketing ploy developed by the Sub Pop boys to sell
records. But once it hit, you should have seen all the "grunge" scene
that sprouted up all over the NW and eventually everywhere else. Just
like what is happening to ska these days. It's no different. But, I'm
tired and don't want to elaborate anymore.
Bye,
Lance

What was at first considered "grunge," was "Smells Like Teen Spirit,"
and all the harder Nirvana type stuff, which is actuallly just NW,
(especially Olympia,) hardcore and punk thatw was waay overproduced, and
with higher vocals, and less screaming. Listen to the Melvins, KARP, or
Bunny Foot Charm, you'll see what I'm talkin' about. But Peal Jam, Alice
In Chains, and Soundgarden, I don't really know how all that got grouped
into the same category.

I dont consider myself a trend jumper. I just found something in ska that I
really liked. Its been almost 4 years now that Ive listened to it, and my
parents were always into the stuff that Influences ska bands today (Lots of
old reagee,Specials, madness, Basically the whole 2nd wave) I just found
ska, skacore and punk is just alot more fullfilling than somebody moaning
how much their life sux.
