We have a half decent scene on the West Coast that's just starting to
really pick up. In Vancouver, there are:
Skaville, formed out of the ashes of other local ska
bands, are the official two-tone cover band, The Malchiks are goofy ska
with a bit of a punk edge, The Hounds of Buskerville are just plain ska,
Trenchant are excellent but somewhat hard to describe, and there's a few
new, young bands like the Crowned Kings just starting out. The Malchiks
(who might be playing back East in May/June, and have an album coming out
next month) and Trenchant are on the All Skanadian Club 3 which any sane
Canadian ought to own by now.

okay, this april my school band is going on a trip up to canada (we live in WA
state) for a band competition. now, on the way we're supposed to be stopping at
some "8 story" (probably exaggeration) record store somewhere in/near calgary.
it's by a place with "tower" in the name i believe. anyway, i was wondering if
there some of you canadian ska fans could e-mail me (or post, of course) a list
of some good (i listen to trad and jazz-y ska mostly) cds to check out. do
trenchant have a cd out? i've heard "mr. roustabout" and i think it's hella
smooth. any help would really be appreciated. by anyone, actually. Gratzi!

dance on!

In Toronto we also have a few ace ska bands, such as:

Arsenals
Spinecracker
Skaface (they broke up)
King Apparatus (they broke up too)
Two Tone Skuds
The Smokers (who are actually from Sudbury...oh well!)
The Skanksters

we have a really great scene going in Windsor, Ontario. oh wait....i mean
we don't have a scene at all. We have one sort of ska band that has only
one trumpet and just plays covers and another band that is trying
desperately to become a reality. I'm in it by the way. We need a drummer
and a bass player and maybe a trumpet player because ours is an idoit. if
anyone can help i will love them for the rest of my natural lifetime.

The CD is called Watch Your Back and is on Stomp Records. Check the
independent types of music shops, but if you can't find it there, you can
write to Stomp at 370 Putney St., St. Lambert PQ, J4P 3B6

The band DOCTOR MANETTE, currently signed to Kingpin Records, is a
hardcore/emo/ska quintet looking for a hardworking, DEDICATED individual
to fill our newly vacated drum seat. The four other non-smoking,
drug-free members of the group attend school full-time at the University
of Illinois, but play shows as often as possible, and WILL BE TOURING this
summer. Influences include:
The Police, Elvis Costello, Bad Brains, Animal Chin, Mr. Bungle, Weezer,
Fugazi, Propagandhi, Fishbone and The blue Meanies. Contact us as soon as
possible if you may be interested.
Committed individuals with a desire to adapt and most of all HIT THE DRUMS
HARD! are exclusively encouraged to respond.
