Ahem.... Caputo, the line forms behind moi.

All kidding aside, as for the guys currently playing, I really respect Glen
Pine, Rick Faulkner, Will Clark. Vinnie Nobile is an animal, too--I can't
say as I've heard his replacement yet, so I can't judge. I know I'm leaving
out a number of quality musicians, but these are the ones I most enjoy
hearing. Also, I'm beat--it's been a loooong day....

Yeah--there's also the good Doctor Ring-Ding. Some truly solid
playing--excellent phrasing and breath control! So when can my band tour
with you? Have I sucked up enough? Really, though--another of my faves....

I personally feel for raw energy it's gotta be Vinnie Nobile (Pilfers former
Bim) But I've seen Rick Falkner (NJSJE, Toasters) tear Shit up! My favorite is
when he and Ruby have a musical duel. Ruby will start out with simple riffs and
Rick will imitate them but he'll progress to these out of control freestyle
scat singy ones and Rick will not only imitate but take it one step further and
embellish on it. Wild! Buford O' Sullivan (Scofflaws) also gets a nod too!

I forget his name, and I don't want to confuse him with the t-bone
player on the new album, but the trombone player on "Redlight" (I want
to say glen pine, but I know it isn't) is really good. Probably the
best trombonist (note: not best "ska" trombonist... best trombonist all
around) that I have heard in a ska band.

good ska trombonists:
Buford O'Sullivan
Di Doctor
Django
Caputo
Tedfuhd
Glen Pine

maybe none of that made sense. oh yeah? well *screw you*!!! I don't

The one who plays on the Slackers' Redlight album is Clark Gayton. Don't know
if he's the best trombonist all around, but he's really one of my favorites. He
also plays on the Rocker-T "Nicer by the Hour" album

well, actually Steve Turre is a world-famous trombonist... and surprise
surprise... he ain't famous for ska! He is probably one of the most
famous living jazz trombone players, he has played with everyone and
even played (plays?) on saturday night live. In my opinion, asking who
is the best ska trombonist is a lot different from asking who the best
trombonist is. A lot of excellent ska trombonists (trombonists who play
with a ska band) are by all other standards just good or very good
trombonists. I won't name names, logically. Steve Turre is a good
trombonist. Period. He's incredible. He's so good that he can play
anything well. Clark Gayton, who plays (played?) with the Mingus Band
is also an incredible trombonist... and can play ska pretty well too.

none of that made any sense probably. The point is, well... I'm not
sure.

but if you ask me who I Think are the best trombonists of all time are,
I could easily tell you.

Vinny Noble is the best, no contest. He is the most versatile of any Ska boner
I have ever heard. He has an incredible full sound, which can probably be
attributed to the fact that he was classically trained, not some "self taught"
trombonist. With 27 years of experience at the horn and 2 incredible bands
(not counting the Les Miserables brass chior) to show for it there is no other
decision as far as a better trobonist in the Ska genre.

Hands down!! What else is there to say about him??
In jazz, you call someone like that a MONSTER.

I'll repost what credits I found on him from last year
___________________________________________________
Clark Gayton's notable accomplishment is that of appearing
in the "Kansas City" Soundtrack. (Great film btw)

You can actually see him play with the
Mingus Big Band at:

Fez at the Time Café
380 Lafayette Street (at Great Jones)
(212)533-7000

• Performances every Thursday at the Fez under the Time Café.
• There are two sets, one at 9:30, another at 11:30.
• Doors open at 8:30 pm.
• Reservations are suggested, and held until 9:00.
• Mingus Menu served from 8:30-Midnight.

Time Out NY Guide calls it the best "house band" in
town and, frankly, who can fuck with Mingus anyway???

Down Beat Jazz Magazine calls them the "Best Big Band", too.

more info at http://www.mingusmingusmingus.com/time.html

He also did/does stints with the Manhattan Symphony Jazz
Orchestra, too.

He's did a stint with Sting as part of the backing band
and I quote from a review of a Jones Beach show

" Gayton peppered many of Sting's songs with an upbeat,
ska-like flair that's been largely absent for years (since, some
might argue, Ghost in the Machine)."

http://www.taponline.com/tap/entertainment/music/reviews/sting/live.html

What else is there??

Duke Ellington Orchestra

He has recorded with Maxwell ("Urban Hang Suite"), Steel Pulse ("Live From Paris"),
Big Mountain ("Resistance"), and is on the sound tracks for the movies "Kansas
City",
"Money Train", & "Malcolm X".

Oh I also forgot that he has 3 CD's out, too, under
his band name

Clark Gayton and Neatherealm

You can listen to his latest reggae working "Walk The Water"
using RealPlayer at:

http://www.localmusicstore.com/catalog/neatherealm.html

I can't believe no one has mentioned Rico, who happens
to be my favorite player. He also is quite famous
outside of the ska/reggae world (his main gig at the
moment is with the Jools Holland Orchestra). The only
album of his to really disappoint me was the re-

because it sounds as if the master tapes had

for starters, I want to say that in order to call me "Michael" and for
me to acknowledge you in any way, you must have earned that right
first. Once you get my respect, you can call me "Michael". Until then
it is "Mike" or "Caputo". I'm serious. I'm not just talking about you

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he the *current*
trombone player for the Toasters (as well as NYSJE), Rick
"Chunk" Faulkner (who's dad is my apartment mate's professor,
by the way)?
Anyway, I like The Toaster's trombone player before him, the
solo in "Lies" was especially impressive, he was high for a
damn trumpet!

Anyway, I think Rick Faulkner is really good, as well as Clark
Gayton and the guy from Bim Skala Bim, but I won't go out on a
limb and judge the *best* ska trombone player. But if I
managed to get me and my friends together and actually start a
band, I'd vote for myself. =)

Faulkner quit to do NYSJE full-time. That's why Dr. Ring Ding played trombone
the last time The Toasters toured.

I nominate Phil Rossi for this award (um... sure). Besides having trombone
talent, he's got MAD charisma and stage presence!!!

My vote goes to Buster Bloodvessel!!!
Alright, so he's not a trombone player,
but imagine if he was. Not only by the
fatest trombone player, but he would
be phat as well.

I've always been a huge fan of Chris Rhodes from SHJ/Bosstones.

Also, Masahiko Kitahara from Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra deserves mention; and on the topic of Japanese ska bands, I always really dug the horn section from Potshot, and all of Ryoji's other projects, mainly Redemption.
