My brother told me about John Coltrane playing fifths on the saxophone and
the idea has intrigued me but I've never been able to play two notes at
the same time, let alone a note and a fifth.

I used to do it all the time, play the middle D and A at the same time,
but then I got that leaky pad replaced, and it don't do that anymore.
:-)

If I were trying to do it on purpose, I'd finger the mid D, vent a
left-hand key to get the A, go back to fingering the D while continuing
to play the A, then slowly let it drop back to the D. Somewhere in
between you should be playing both notes simultaneously. Playing an
octave that way is fairly easy; a fifth, less so.

I assume that's the sort of thing your brother is referring to, if I'm
wrong I surely will be corrected shortly.

try www.wfg.woodwind.org ... there are many fingering tables, maybe
you'll find multiphonics table there which will suit you.
