Any list of the Greatest Living Sax Players should include FRANK
TIBERI, who has led the Woody Herman Thundering Herd since 1987 when
Woody died (played 18 yrs with Woody prior to his death). The sound
he gets is incredible - he does things with the horn I've Never Heard
done. If John Coltrane were still alive, Frank would be his favorite
Saxist, IMHO. Of course, everyone knows how many wonderful Sax
players played with the Herman Band over the years.

If you want to hear this Monster, get the Herd's latest 2 CD's:

1) NY JAM Records: A Tribute to the Legacy of Woody Herman (1998)

2) NY JAM Records: LIVE IN LONDON at Ronnie Scott's

Order these at www.cdstreet.com - can't buy thru Amazon, etc. NY JAM
is a Jazz Agency in NYC, run by Saxist John Nugent, who is a monster
by his own right, and is also featured on these 2 CD's.

Listen to Frank's BODY & SOUL on LEGACY, and EARLY AUTUMN on LONDON.
Also, his Soprano solo on Northwest Passage is incredible.

Take care, and enjoy the Herd - they're Better than Ever. BTW, see
www.autumneveconcerts.com for info about the Woody Herman Tribute to
be held in Hollywood Oct. 18-19, 2002. Features the current HERD with
Frank Tiberi, and tons of ex-Herdsmen alumni guest appearances, like
Joe Lovano, Terry Gibbs, Bill Perkins, Jack Nimitz, Phil Wilson, Jake
Hanna, Joe LaBarbera, Alan Broadbent, plus Many More, as well as the
Jazz America Youth Orchestra and the Berklee College Rainbow Band.

Admitted Herdaholic (and amateur Saxist),

Colonel - I agree about Frank. He's a monster. Have you ever heard the
record he made with Harold Danko on Dreamstreeet. I'm sure it's OOP by now,
but Frank joins Tom Harrell on the front line for some great blowing. Frank
plays 'Startdust' and does the verse on bassoon. Very nice recording.

Glenn, I searched around and can't find the Danko/Tiberi CD you
mentioned. Please help me with the CD Title, etc. Available thru
Amazon.com?
Thanks,
Colonel
PS: You've got a neat Website - hope I can catch you sometime. I'm
good friends with Mike Brignola - what a Monster Too!

The Danko CD Glenn talks of was on Dreamstreet Records.
I know I got it somewhere- as I am a big Tiberi fan. Frank studied bassoon
w/Sol Schoenback in Philly when he was young.
AND- many do not know this...REPLACED Wardell Grey with Benny Goodman.

There should be a Tiberi CD out 2x a year on Verve and videos on his harmonic
knowledge by some music press. This guy
knows things that are amazing.
If I find it -ya want a tape??

Colonel - I doubt if it's available on CD. I don't think Dreamstreet is in
business anymore. I have the LP. It's called Coincidence
(Dreamstreet-104) and was released in 1979. The rest of the group is Rufus
Reid and Joe LaBarbera. There's even a tune called 'Extractions of Frank
Tiberi'. If you can't find it, let me know.

Yep, it's there a CDNOW.com, Glenn. Unfortunately VINYL only. Oh,
well. I'll have to enjoy Frank on my Herrd CD's, as well as Frank's
TIBERIAN MODE CD, with is also Great. He does an Very Extended and
beautiful BODY & SOUL on it. BTW, Frank plays the most beautiful
Bassoon you ever heard - used to play PAVANE with it with the Herd,
but he no longer plays Bassoon with the band. I have the WOODY AT
DISNEYLAND Laser Video from the mid-80's, and he plays Pavane with
Bassoon there - simply incredible..

Vinyl LP on Dream Street label, from 1979:
'Coincidence'
Frank Tiberi(ts,bassoon)
Tom Harrell(tp,flh)
Harold Danko(p)
Rufus Reid(b)
Joe Labarbera(ds)

Thanks, Glenn. Didn't realize it was Vinyl; I got rid of my turntable
about 8 years ago. Hopefully it'll come out on CD one of these
days... Are you going to the Woody Tribute Oct 18-19th in Hollywood?
Frank and the HERD are playing 2 Long Sets Satureday night Oct19.
Note BODY&SOUL in Set2. For Complete details go to
http://www.autumneveconcerts.com - Call Roxanne at 323-769-1442 for
