Does anyone know who the rocking bari sax player was on Charles Mingus's
'Moanin'. I love that song! Thanx in advance. -Dave

Assuming you mean the Atlantic recording w/Mingus, and not the Mingus
Big Band, it's Pepper Adams...

...says right on the liner notes....

A friend of mine is a great Tenor player here in Chattanooga, TN. Our local
college band was one of the best in the country in the 70's. One day they
were playing at in DC before the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra when Pepper
was playing bari. He came up to my friend Brent King, who plays like a cross
between Coltrane and Dexter, and said, "man you play great!" Brent asked him
about the bari hanging around his neck and Pepper said, "SAME HORN, 47
YEARS!" He let Brent blow it. What a gas. Pepper was the man! I heard
Mulligan's was stolen. That would be terrible. Dig...KR

Hey, man! How are you? Where are you living now? I was in Houston for
several years. I wondered if you were the same Steve Carmichael. You'll be
happy to know that Marlene married a real bore. Check out my website, although
I'm about to redo the whole thing....www.bopsax.com. Good to hear from you.

Unrelated to the question but related to the bari sax, my great-nephew was accepted in UC Riverside in their music program. He plays the bari sax as well as cello. I am looking to purchase/rent a bari sax for his graduation present but not sure what I'm looking for. Can anyone provide me with guidance. I am so proud of him trying to rise and I want to provide him with every thing I can to help him to succeed.
Thank you so much in advance.

that would be ronnie cuber, one of the best baritone players ever, right next to pepper adams and Gary Smulyan
