Hi guys

I am looking for a vintage ('50, '60) metal Otto Link mouthpiece for my
tenor sax. Unfortunately, I realize these suckers are quite rare in France,
although there is a specific market that only the pros can afford. So I am
asking to you all, sax gurus : what is the best alternative I was told not
to buy the new metal Otto Link mouthpieces. What else is as close as
possible as the old ones.
Thanks for your wisdom.

Go ahead and try the new ones. Although the odds are better with a
vintage link, there are a lot of VERY nice new pieces, including both
the Super Tone Master and the so-called "NY Model". Best bet is to
either visit a store and try several, or order at leat three in teh
same facing.

Don't get a mouthpiece just cause you heard it's cool, or looks cool. Go to
the music store, and bring a bunch of reeds and sit down for an hour or so
and mess around of different mouthpieces. You're likely to find one that you
like.

Actually the current 7* Otto Links have a design with a larger chamber
than 70's80's in an effort to get into the market that is so strong for
their older stuff. If you try a few you might find an excellent player.
I am going to the studio with one on right now even though I own a
Florida Supertonemaster and a NY Tonemaster LInk John Z:

I'd second BBB's remarks. I've had my Super Tone Master 6* for about a year
now on my Chu tenor and I absolutely love it. I haven't had the opportunity
to compare it with an older Link, but I've got a Runyon and Selmer C* in hard
rubber as well as an old metal Brillhart Levelaire 9* and the Link wins hands
down. But as everyone always says, it's ultimately a personal matter ...

There are a number of new mouthpieces that are designed to cater to
that market. Most of them are rather pricey, though. They have a low
roll-over baffle and big round chamber, like a Link. There's a
"Legend" from SR Technologies that runs 200 bucks (US) from the
Woodwinds and the Brasswinds. I've never played or seen one, and I
don't know if they are manufactured well or not. You could try one.
They let you send them back if you haven't scratched it or something.
Ponzol has a "II-V-I" that's even more expensive. When buying a
Ponzol mpc, be sure the tip is shaped right for a standard reed. Many
have a tip that is too round.

I would suggest you try a Ralph Morgan "L" (hard rubber). They're
only about a hundred bucks. Ralph Morgan mouthpieces are finished
well. You could also try some new Otto Links at about the same price.

Try a vandoren V16. I seen many Link players who really like them. The have a
good punch like a vintage Link. They still aren't quite as 'fat' sounding
though. Theo

Beware of SR, they make a big deal about their computer design. But
I had one for evaluation for a few days and it had NONE of the warmth
and character of a good link. I would go for a Ponzol if it weren't for
my 7*, I don't know if its quite 'vintage', but its late 70's or early
80's. Its an absolute JEWEL, and the best thing is I paid $50 :-), the
person who bought it new 20 some years ago didn't like it and threw it
in a drawer...

Now if I could just find someone like that with a MkVI tenor :-) :-)

Is that the standard STM, or the NY model? Just the 7*, or all tip
openings?
