Though I just purchased an SA80 II and love it, I tried an old, VERY used
mark VI and LOVED IT! This was a SCHOOL instrument, and had almost been
ABUSED!!! But it was great: wonderful tone with my hard rubber (mpc.) and
Vandoren V16 reeds (my fav), and very free blowing and mellow!
Down with SA 80! Don't I wish I had found a MARK VI in good condition
before spending nearly $4800 list!

I don't know. I'd have to disagree with you here. I bought a brand new
Selmer Super Action 80 series II alto sax and I totally love it. When my horn was in
for a regular schedualed tune-up, my band directory lent me his Mark VI and
I didn't like it all that much. Mark VI is the best when in come to tenors,
but they lack something with the Alto. What type of sax do you play?
Bill
Slight generalization there, Bill. I tried seven or eight different SA80
Altos before I bought my Mark VI. I really dislike the SA80 altos. I have
played an SA80 tenor once and it was okay. The only SA80 I'd buy would be a
soprano. My Mark VI alto is the best sax I've ever played -- it sounds so
pure and round compared to the bright SA80.
Incidentally, what was the serial number on your director's horn? I'd bet it
was more than 150,000, which is about when the Mark VI began going south.
Mine is an 83,000 (early 1960).
When I got mine, I also tried a 212,000 series (late 1973), and it was just
weird! It had a high F# and looked and played exactly like an SA80.
