It looks like a small bari with the loop in the neck, but for some
reason when she puts her cartoon lips to it, it sounds like a tenor.

As to her setup... I'd say it's a Smeller Uber Unbalanced 88
mezzo-bari circa 1987, with a Lynn Larsen mouthpiece and a VerBruggen
2.75 reed. Oh yeah, a Bowser ligature, and a Nike gig bag...

Andy this was obiviously a young person
who wanted info. This kind of "wise crack" is something that
could turn a young person off to this group. Please in future
use some respect for the youth that surf thru here.I'm not
flaming you just telling you to show some common sense.Thank you.

hip...

Actually, I'd say it sounds more like a bari played in the upper end of the
"natural" range, as well as in the altissimo region. Just doesn't sound quite
like a tenor to me...

JonD,

I have a great deal of respect for this group and its membership. I
also have a sense of humor, which I don't think needs explaining,
justification, or anything else. Certainly anyone who watches "The
Simpsons" ought to be able to take a joke. If anyone was offended by
my post, it was you (whoever you are). Why don't you just say so,
instead of dragging "the children" into it.

Must be a Saturday...

She plays baritone, and I've heard something about David Sanborn having
something to do with it.... Can this be true? Isn't Sanborn far too "hip" to
play bari? Heard something similar about Tom Scott, same story... Check out the
Tower of Power horns on the Simpsons LP "Sing the Blues".

If the Lisa whistle figurine here on my desk is anything to go by, it's
somewhere between a tenor and a baritone, it's blue, and it only plays
one (rather high) note.

Just my take on this long post:

-It looks like a cross between tenor/bari/and bass most of the time.
-The sound is sometimes tenor, some bari, and even alto once or twice.
-I'm not sure if her first and second saxes were the same(her first one got
crushed).

Hope this helps

And just to annoy anyone who has brought a bari (or any sax) it cost
Homer $250
It has "to lisa with doh" engraved on it (vandel) and was run over by
a steamroller and replaced for similar money (homer was saving the
$250 for an airconditioner)

The Simpson episode when Bleeding Gums Murphy dies in the hospital was shown
locally last night. Before he died, he gave Lisa his Alto or Tenor. So Lisa
has her $250 bari and BG's sax.. Brother Bart bought lisa a $500 BG album
(jacked up from $250 upon his death) and Lisa got the local jazz station to
play it as a tribute - original range of station: 27 feet - but power came down
from heaven and boosted signal strength. These animators love the saxophone.

Actually, many of the animators have no idea what a bari "saxo-mo-phone"
looks like. That's why Lisa's sax usually never looks much like a bari
sax. (There's an interview with Simpsons creator Matt Groening on the
simpsons archive website (www.snpp.com) that has that info in it...)

I know you guys are talking about what horn is actrually shown on the show, but
what kind of horn is actually making the sound, and who's playing it? What
about Bleeding Gums' horn?

I'm almost positive Lisa plays bari, and Bleeding Gums played alto.

I haven't seen enough episodes to hear all the voices of Lisa's sax...
apparently it has been dubbed as both tenor and bari at different
times. The episode I'm thinking of, is the one where her sax gets run
over and Homer has to give up something to buy her a new one... seems
like all the playing in that one sounded like tenor.

BTW, I also like the sound that a bari has in it's upper range +
altissimo.

The Simpsons is a giant joke. It makes no difference what kind of sax
Lisa plays. The crude drawings of people on this show are just as
ambiguous. If you remove the images from your screen and just listen
to the dialogue, you'd still understand what's going on. Maybe the
Simpsons should be broadcast on National Public Radio, for all the
value of the so-called animation.

I'm surprised that no one on this NG has asked who actually plays
tenor for Lisa.
