Sure -

Other than a flippant comment about joe camel's preferences in mouthpiece
and reeds, I sent the following - not much help, I'm afraid....
=======================
melanie -

Assume you mean saxophone as an iconic instrument in non-sax related ads -
eg Jazz after shave, Weller hair stuff. If you mean ads for saxes, check The
Sax and Brass Book (Brian Priestley, Dave Gelly et al) for some examples.

Thanks a lot, Nick, for sending the message again. I just realized, that
other people answered as well, but I missed their answers, too. Too bad.
Anyway. Thanks, Melanie

Sorry, just read your answer again. I do mean the Jazz after shave and Wella
hair stuff ads! Where did they appear? In the states? Would you have any
examples of those or could you tell me, where to find them?

Thanks, Melanie

As I recall, Jazz aftershave (can't remember the maker) has a silhouette of
a tenor layer on the black and white box, and I think when it was launched
(during the short lived UK jazz boom of the mid 80s) there were press ads
with a similar theme...

I believe Wella had a TV ad, featuring lovely young people dancing around,
one of whom (male) was pretending (badly) to play the alto. A bit like the
movie St Elmo's Fire (tho that was tenor)...

Sorry, ihave no idea if these appeared in the states, as you may gather, I'm
a Brit.. a good source for similar iconography might be back copies of iD
and The Face magazines, esp from the mid/late 80s,.

Good luck

Nick

Dear Nick,

thanks for your answer! I don´t actually mind, whether they appeared in the
US or in Britain. But it´s good to know, that the one´s you told me about
apperared in Britain.

What are the iD and Face Magazines? Would I find them online somewhere
somehow or where do you think I might find them? Thanks a lot for your help
anyway.

Melanie

iD and The Face are two British style mags, painfully conscious of their own
trendiness. I suggest the 80s because that was the period when
jazz/saxophone = chic, for the mass market.

Dunno if you can find them online - ask Google or another decent search
engine. Unlikely that they will have back issues that far back
anyway...might try a design consultancy or someone with a decent library?

Also, I think I've seen a number of coffee table books of old ads....can't
think of titles/authors, but might be worth keeping an eye open for them.

Robertson's marmalade (a UK brand) used to have a Golliwog mascot, you could
buy badges and ceramic models of them doing various things - one of those
was a sax player. Not available now for obvious reasons.

Thanks for all your help, Nick!

If you wanted to check my topic in a public library in London, where would
you go? To the Barbican? Or there is another library especially for music,
isn´t there?
