Here are some suggestions-
1. Buy Lewis Porters book.....
Read his section on this composition.
The part about the :::POEM::::in the record sleeve
being set....to music in a instrumental fashion makes
total sense to me. PLease read Lewis info on this.
I think this is a reality of something Trane was doing
on this from a structural way. ( I've talked to Benny Maupin
at length about this and he felt the same way. )
That rubato-ish speech pattern....Trane was playing...
it had a certain poetic quality, instrumentally.
OK- Look at the poem , read it and THEN.......listen
to the music.
2. Around bars 212..that is some of the best motivic improvising
you'll ever hear....in a modern context.
I'd suggest...if you haven't done it yet....
Transcribing THAT by ear...first sing it along
with Trane , then start to play it.
It will open your playing and ears no matter what
level your at.
+ Final thought+
Lewis Porters book ......a must read for saxophone
players. This >mind set < Trane had at this
period is approached by Mr Porter in a inspiring
fashion in his book. I recommend it.
Hope this opens some doors for you Nuno.....Tim Price
