FWIW, he also plays it on the 'All the Young Dudes' album that he produced
for Mott the Hoople.

I guess I missed the start of this thread, but let me chime in here and
say that I never disliked Bowie's sax playing. I don't know if y'all
have ever heard the instrumental "Neukoln," from the album "Heroes," but
that sax always impressed me. It was probably the first time I'd heard
anyone play a sax "out there" like that (now, this was several years
before I listened to much jazz). Not as "out there," but still
enjoyable, was Bowie's sax on "Subterraneans," the last song on the
album "Low." Really not much of a sax part, pretty simple. In
hindsight the whole song (maybe just the mood) reminds me of "Sanctuary"
from "Bitches Brew."
That said, I was disappointed with Bowie's sax playing on "Black Tie
White Noise." I thought the sound processing was distracting. Maybe
he'd let his chops go that much since the late-70s? It was nice to hear
a sax paired with that style of music and I just wish he had done it
better. (He duets with Lester Bowie on that album)
