I really like a solo I have of his (Stella By Starlight, trio I
believe) but don't know the album it's from. He's the first modern
(70's) player that turned me on to a contemporary harmonic approach to
standards when I was still a youngin'.

Anyone ever know him? What was he like? How did he pass on?

thanks

He played soprano, tenor and flute with both Chick and Herbie mostly
active in the 70's as far as I recall. I don't remember whatever
happened to him. He once recorded a nice album with Art Pepper ...and
also one with G. Benson ... Hell of a player ...

I knew Joe Farrell well. AKA-Joesph Firantello from Chicago. His dad ran a
restaurant in Chicago, and Joe was a A1 example of a Chi town hard blowin'
player.Who was into it ALL.
Whatever he played...He was On track- and playin' his ass off.
His NYC career started with Maynard and he met Jaki Byard there in that
band.Joes comments to me about Jaki were really blunt- Jaki turned his harmonic
head around. By using OPEN intervals and 4th stack on chords Farrell went
beyond
the Trane thing and into a high energy based post bop.
Joes horns were- a Gold Plated Mk6 tenor with a rubber 110/0 Berg and #5 Rico
brown box reeds. Haynes and Powell open and closed hole flutes.
A gold plated cigar cutter alto with white brill mth and #5 reeds. Loree oboe
and Eng. horns.Selmer clarinets as well. I remember that well as many time he
let me try his set ups when I'd go to his Central Pk West home to practice with
him.
Joe loved ALL kinds of music and embraced a wild sense of humor as well.
He had this KILLIN' organ group reel- to-reel tape from a gig at Al Greys
Jersey clun with organist Don Patterson and Bobby Durham on drums. He played "
Will You Still be mine" as a up tempo tune for 20 minutes!!!! ( talk about
HARD BOP,,,damn!! )
Joe also took me and Rich Aronson to " Moon Germs " record date at Rudy
VanGelders in early 70's for CTI records. We watched those cats play everything
- IN ONE TAKE!!! Joe was on FIRE on soprano. The cool thing was we drove in his
VB bus to Jersey with him, and he sais- I gotta pick up these bass player. So
we go to the apt. intercom and Farrell barks into the speaker" Stanley get the
fuck down here"
and is laughing like a kid. It was funny as hell - no kidding.Down comes
Stanley Clarke with his upright bass...laughing like mad at Joe. He LOVED
Joe.Most did that knew him.He was one of those kinda guys.On the way homeits
November...and he stops to get gas in Jersey...goes to a vending machine...AND
GETS A ICE CREAM BAR!!!!!! Stanley looks at us and sais " Hes Out"....laughing.
It was below zero!
That nite Joe took us for some food and beers. He was a beautiful guy.He laid
some of my first NYC gigs on me in 1973...just little gigs but it was a help.He
also turned me on to how to play a wedding NYC style without any issues. He
saved my kid ass for sure.
His stuff with ELVIN JONES was stellar....
Elvin Jones Elvin Jones Live at the Town Hall: John Coltrane Memorial Concert

Elvin Jones New Agenda
Elvin Jones Mr. Jones
Elvin Jones Merry-Go-Round
Elvin Jones Poly-Currents
Elvin Jones Puttin' It Together
Elvin Jones The Prime Element
He also did loads of rock stuff like played on:
Hall & Oates Abandoned Luncheonette
Playing saxes and Oboe!!!!!
Not to mention some classic fusion with COREA and later -Lorber.
Jeff Lorber Lift Off
Jeff Lorber Water Sign
Jeff Lorber Soft Space
PLUS-killin' rock with Felix and the Rascals....AMAZING SOPRANO on those!!!

The Rascals Search and Nearness
The Rascals Peaceful World
The Rascals The Island of Real
PLUS was the original guy in Thad and Mels big band.
I think about this cat everyday sometimes....he was a huge inspiration to many
players and one advanced dude harmonically. He could sight read ANYTHING.
Plus- he had that Chi town jam thing like one of his heros Ira Sullivan. He
loved to play.And- PLAY HARD.
He used to hold his tenor up with Elvin and just smoke without a mike.BURN and
open the harmony. His flute was one of the best ever.NOBODY played jazz on
english horn like him. He inspired me there to, tho on bassoon.
Guys like him are a lost breed today...a lost breed. He played from the gut
and the brain.I think about him a LOT....he was very cool to me.
He died of lukemia, ..SAD.
GREAT VOICE IN JAZZ.
.........Tim Price

First thanks to Tim for that great post. You've shared parts of your
experiences with Joe Farrell elsewhere on the internet, and it really
conveys the excitement of Joe's playing and spirit.

After learning of Joe through his work with Chick and his own CTI
albums, I was fortunate enough to hear him at Donte's jazz club in
Hollywood in the early 80s. He was playing tenor, soprano and flute
that night, and was truly amazing on all of them. It's a shame he left
us so early.

Frank,

Is Dante's still there or in business. I went there a few times in '69.
Got to hear George VanEpps (sp?)....wonderful. Heard the Brecker Bros.
too. Haven't been back to LA since then.

Ya know Tim, every once and a while when I'm talking music, musicians
and stuff with other musicians, they'll ask me, since I'm a woodwind
player, "Who's your fave jazz flute player?" My answer is always....Joe
Farrell. Sometimes I'll get asked, who's your favorite soprano sax
player, thinking I'm going to say Trane. Again, my answer is always Joe.

His flute playing wasn't contrived, it wasn't the super licks or
anything like that. It was original, genuine and Sooooo musical.

Think I'll go listen to "Crystal Silence" and think warm thoughts.

I love reading the personal antedotes about players and some of the
things that happen when the horn is not in their mouth. I too am a
great fan of Joe and had mentioned in a post quite some time ago I
adore musicians that play in ways like Joe did that just take you to
another place...... That is the magic of a cat like Joe and it is
people that make a contribution to music like this that drew me into
playing.

I also find Joe's playing to be very "organic" and smooth, yet uncut and
....I dunno complete and all encompassing "whole". It is like a great
aural feast . Guys like this are a dying breed and even in jazz these
days so much seems contrived. I realize this thread is about Joe but I
am inspired a great deal by one Mr. Tim Price .

Tim is IMO cut from the same swath of musical cloth, densely woven with
great texture as Joe Farrell. If any of you fellow sax players want to
hone your own skills and broaden your musical horizons I very highly
recommend you get hooked up with Tim Price for some of his "Underground
Books" and lessons. I had the great pleasure to hear a recording of
some musicians that had studied with Tim both as saxophonist and
harmony, composition , theory, etc. ........I was flabbergasted at the
level and quality of music his students are producing.........I swear
Tim could have told me it was a Blue Note recording and I would not have
known it.........The kicker is these students were just finishing high
school!! I have barely scratched the surface of some of the books
Tim sent me and gotta tell ya it added a lot of color to my pallette as
a musician,,,,,Tim could even teach this old dog some new tricks and the
main thing is it has added to my enjoyment in playing.

One more thing that many of you don't know is besides being an
astonishing educator , bar none Tim is one of the finest musicians on
the planet. Everything I've had the pleasure of hearing him
play....bassoon, clarinet, alto flute, alto, tenor and bari
saxes.......he is more than just a master.........he is both a
historian, innovator and seriously so creative and an immense joy to
listen to. I hope to God Tim gets signed to a decent label that will
put it out there the way it should be. Sorry to toot Tims' horn for him
but I would love to see him get the same kind of exposure and
recognition of great legends like Joe. I know I kinda went off track
but Tim was one of the first guys to hip me to the real world of guys
like Joe and their humor, etc. and Tim if you are out there reading
this, from the bottom of my heart bro' I want to thank you and express
my appreciation for the enrichment your music, philosophy and study
materials have meant to me as a person and player. You are the real
deal!

I honestly can't say. I left the area in 1990, and although I've
visited a number of times since then, I don't know if the club is
still in operation. I would guess not.

Someone just forwarded me the trio sessions from 1968 with Elvin and
Jimmy Garrison featuring Farrell. I had no idea he was playin that
much tenor back when the White Album came out lol

thanks all for your recollections and especially TP. I really think
Tim you should write a book (a BIG one) just describing all your
recollections with players man.

I want the first copy!

Richard,

No, Dante's has been closed for about 10 years or so. The owner died in the
club's office.
