Thanks!
The opinions on a Martin Indiana are somewhat different: some say it is a
student-model some other say it is an underestimated sax!
You have to take a look at the site of Edwin van Drunen about the Martins:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~adasof09/
I play an indiana tenor (with indian-chief head on the bell) with serial
46XXX and I like it: the sound, the adjustable thumb-rest and its action!
Take a look at Ebay for some price-indices: depending on quality of the horn
between 300- 500 USD.
greetings,
paul

It's an interesting site too!
I've just got a consignment of vintage horns in for sale and there's a
few Martins in amongst the pile - I found your info most helpful.
If it's OK with you I'd like to put a link to your site from mine when
I get round to composing the links page.

Stephen:
If there's a vintage soprano in the pile,
I have cash waiting, even for an unrestored horn.
[And tell me about any half-decent tenors]

The only Sop is a Earlham.
There's a Buffet SA tenor and a Martin ( The Martin ) tenor.. the rest
are altos.
There's an old Selmer soloist sop mouthpiece though, a C*.
There's a dead groovy flute in the pile.. a Deford, that comes with a
curved head joint.... but not one that's curved back but rather down!
The flute has a thumbrest, so you can play it in the sax position!
It feels distinctly odd - but it's better than my early experiments
with this format...where I soon found out that without a thumbrest the
flute tends to hit the deck when you hit C#.
How did you "get a consignment of vintage horns in for sale"???
Estate sale? Pawn shop ?
Wind band closing down ? School music dept clear out?
I wish somebody would consign *me*
a whole pile of vintage horns to dipose of.....

It's a client of mine, her father passed away recently - and for some
years he'd been collecting instruments by way of a hobby.
Some look promising, others less so.
I don't usually deal in sales, but as these instruments are somewhat
unusual I said I'd handle them.
As for a bass clari, no, sorry, they're all standard Bb jobbies.

Very much so - I've spent the best part of this morning playing with a
Committee ( The Martin ___ ) tenor - and I have to say that there was
much to-ing and fro-ing between it and my faithful Yamaha23.
I'm seriously tempted - the Martin has a darker, fuller sound with
still plenty of cut, but the Yamaha has a gorgeous clarity that really
'rings'.
What would perhaps clinch it would be a complete rebuild of the
Martin, removal of a dodgy old lacquer job ( most of which would go
during the necessary soldering jobs anyway ) and a gold plate.
That's a lot of work, and although the Martin is a lovely horn it's
not so lovely that it absolutely grabs me.
I at least have the luxury of being able to play the horns over the
coming weeks. Time will tell.
