Hello all,

I'm curious about what saxophone multiphonics really sound like.

I googled and found that the Coltrane tune "Harmonique" on the "Coltrane
Jazz" album contains good examples. Can you cite others?

Thanks :)

Try anything by Evan Parker, especially his early solo recordings.
John Butcher is another master

Search out David Pope. I've heard some intriguing work involving
multiphonics from him.

Jay Easton has a number of saxophone techniques, including multiphonics,
demonstrated in sound files at this web site
http://lachesis.caltech.edu/jayeaston/index.html in the "Information for
Composers" section.

If you play, pick up your horn, play a low C, and release the F key. If
nothing comes out, play a little louder. This is the easiest one to
get, of the ones I know.

I remember watching Jean-Marie Londeix play a tune consisting almost
entirely of multiphonics. It slowly morphed from isolated notes into a
blues progression.

Pharoah Sanders likes to stack them, and I remember Joe Henderson playing
some on one of the Billy Strayhorn tunes. I can't remember right now the
specific recordings, but I think Henderson's might be on his late recording
of "Chelsea Bridge," near the end - I could be misremembering.

You will probably find some overtones being played from the bell keys on
some Mark Turner recordings, somewhere.

Woops - sorry - reading too fast and carelessly - answered to the
"Harmonique" reference instead of what you actually asked.

This book is the bible of MultiPhonics

For all saxophones. 177 different note combinations diagramed and
explained. These multiphonics will also help to build strength,
flexibility and endurance

http://www.learnaboutmusic.com/SAX046.html

Its by John Gross, and the best text ever for this.
Check out some of Johns work with Billy Mintz the drummer and you'll
hear them used.....MELODICALLY.

Also Bert Wilson. Check him at www.bertwilson.com

Berts been using them sinse the jump. Also Dolphy at times, tho theres
a lot of split tones in Eric and Pharoah, that are more " double stops"
then MULTI.
Most folks can't hear the entire multiphonic that well, and call
anything from an overblown overtone to a scream a multiphonic.

Jim Pepper is another great one at this, search out his CDs.

LoVANO USES THEM IN A " PASSING CLUSTER" KINDA WAY WHEN HE PLAYS
WITHIN THE TIME.
Its best heard on his trio Cds.

Harmonique,,,yes FWIW- On a Elvin Jones record on PaloAlto records
-Pat LaBarbera creates the _clusters_Trane used to a T.
PERFECT.
Ya gotta hear it :)

Thers a cat in Philly- Odean Pope. Plays a great tapestry of these
within his thing. Sad too, cuz he traveled the globe with Max Roach and
is never in the Philly clubs playing. ( Oh well what ya expect when
morons run stuff- duh$!@#$$#!@ )

You'll hear these _float_thru a lot of guys playing, at times you can
hear if they ARE used as melodics or just passion crys :)
