I know there have to be a few of you here... So I upgraded to the
latest version of iTunes. The coverflow is gimmicky, but neato...
anyway, the majority of my library is comprised of songs I ripped from
my CD collection. I did "get album artwork" and it went through the
motions, seeming to indeed get artwork for all of the albums I have.
However, it still doesn't display them, only the artwork for the few
songs I either imported after ripping them with mediaplayer and the
others I've gotten from the apple store. I quit and restarted it, and
it still doesn't show the artwork. Am I missing something really
simple here? thanks for any help...

(I'm assuming there's not something unusual going on, like a firewall
blocking you or anything like that...)

Depending on how eclectic your library is, iTunes may not find very many
album covers... It goes through the *motions* of searching for every single
album you have, but it isn't going to find all of them.

Over time, it will keep trying, though, if you go into iTunes' preferences
and check "Automatically download missing album artwork". Then, when you
flip to an "empty" album cover, it will look for it again. I sometimes see
it "popping in" artwork which wasn't there before. (Apparently Apple keeps
increasing their database of artwork.)

I use images.google.com to find other missing artwork and paste it in
manually, which is tedious, but I've probably got cover art for 80-90% now.

Note that if you also want the artwork copied from iTunes onto an iPod, you
have to check the "Display album on your iPod" checkbox, in the iPod section
under the Music tab.

Some of them are just plain wrong. Sometime hillariously so. I was
listening to a philosophy lecture, and looked down to realize that the
album cover of something (I think it was some death metal group) was
being displayed.

More commonly (like some 70's groups) the cover of a Greatest Hits
album is displayed for several albums (cuts that are on the greatest
hits, but weren't ripped from that album).

I will add that iTunes doesn't have everything. For example if you have any
ACDC or Led Zeppelin you will not get the artwork through iTunes because
they don't have rights to sell it yet. I noticed today that they recently
added Jethro Tull's catalog.

There are programs out there that will search out the textual info for songs
(artist, album, track etc) but I don't know if there's any "plug in" that
will search for artwork from a wider pool than what iTunes has. Seems to me
there has to be SOMEONE out there that has a program for it though. Search
around some on google. Maybe search "album artwork fetcher". heh.

Good luck. I know I have a lot of missing artwork as well. My ipod doesn't
display it so I don't mind so much.

Right, and there has got to be something embedded in the file that does
something. I say this because I just DL "The Killing Words" by Queensryche
to get the accoustic version from some "Metal of the 80s" collection. I
changed the album name attribute to "Rage For Order" and tried to get the
actual artwork but it still comes back with the cover for the cheesy
collection album.

Great, another Apple product that doesn't "just work" ;-)

It did seem to grab a lot, and I don't think my library is that
eclectic

Actually, I think it did work when I did it: I checked the iTunes
directory and it made a folder and populated (in special, numbered
directories for which there seems to be no rhyme or reason) a lot of
files "ITC" format. I think that actually is the artwork. I can't open
it, and it won't let me drag into the artwork box. Wth?

I'll try that. Mabye it'll load it and display on the iPod itself....
I'll probably bring my laptop into work and find someone around here
who's more into it than I am. I'll let you guys know what it was.
Thanks for all of the responses. (no, seriously ;^)

Re: my question about importing album arts in the latest version of
iTunes:

Well, turns out my wi-fi at home SUX. But since it is free, you get
what you pay for, though I may start complaining about the
"complimentary" service since they just jacked up my rent. After going
through the motions half a dozen times on the crappy connection, I
noticed that a few pieces of artwork did get populated into my
library, randomly, so I didn't see them at first. Previously, the
message bar said that it was getting art for X albums, and files did
get loaded into my iTunes folder, but there must be more info that it
missed. So I took my laptop to a hotspot at the local taqueria and it
populated everything else in about a minute or so.

Case closed.
