Hey there,

I was talking with the GM of WLUM radio in milwaukee on sunday. They
used to be an "alternative" station who changed there format to a "rock"
cuz alternative is dead and they wanted more variety. They are trying to
get a WXRT feel (for those in chicago) in playing great rock from old
and new artists and skipping the mainstream overplayed crap. I was
mentioning how they play Zeppelin and Hendrix and Sprinsteen and Petty
but I havent heard Rush yet and he said that even though he would like
to play them, they really havent influenced any new bands and so they
wouldnt fit their idea. I wasnt able to think fast enuf to tell him what
new bands are most certainly influenced by Rush so I let it pass.

So who do you know that is on the cutting edge of "rock" music who
have no problem referencing Rush as a main influence. I know Primus is
big on Rush but I cant think of anybody else.

Thanks alot
Ryan

Are these groups who sound in some way like Rush, or have they actually
said that they have been influenced by Rush?

Another band that was majorly influenced by Rush is a band called Victor.

Thinking all the way back to the '80s... Metallica and Dream Theater.
Cliff Burton always brought up Rush when he was asked about his
influences. (Rush is even thanked in the liner notes to Master of
Puppets!) As for Dream Theater, every single member of the band idolizes
Rush and owns nearly every album... and Portnoy owns all of 'em plus a
pile of boots.

I'm pretty sure "Live" and "Metallica" are both fans of Rush, although
I'm not sure whether they were influenced musically by them.

Here's a short list of other bands not mentioned so far-- some of 'em aren't exactly new...
  • Better Than Ezra
  • I Mother Earth (like, duh)
  • 23rd Hour (heh heh)
  • Soundgarden (well, they were...)
  • Tool (I once heard Adam Jones start one of their songs in concert by using the first two bars of Passage to Bangkok)
  • Stabbing Westward
  • Live (mainly Chad Gracie)
You're still not going to find many 'new' bands into Rush-- at least not openly. Prog rock in all its forms is still taboo in the MTV-addicted industry. Too many talentless schmoes out there looking for the next Hanson, Spice Girls, and Puff Daddy.

Ack, this is painful to digest, if it is true...I've always HATED Bush
*because* their name is so close to "Rush" and, well, due to the fact I
think they suck. I definitely don't hear ANY Rush influence in Bush's
songs. On the contrary, Bush plays like most all other talentless,
MTV-marketed bands: kings of three-chord, over-distorted crap. And the
lyrics...simply atrocious.

I thought Bush got their name from the slang word for marijuana.... And they
do suck.
