Sorry, but no Metallica or Megadeth on this list. Megadeth's best
album was Rust in Peach (1990). And Metallica's two best albums - Ride
The Lightning and Master of Puppets narrowly miss this list.
More lists. Are you having fun writing lists?
it's what pakis do. they can't help it.
Damn good album. I'm working out to that tomorrow.

It's a sure giveaway that a person is a paki when they can't stop doing this.
It is what exposed Raja to me as being a paki.
You watch, even now that he knows he won't be able to stop. He can't.
Only pakis are lidat.
He likes YES too , i like them too but not as much as Rush ..
Raja would be a little better if he was from India.
How long will it take before Raja makes Libbys list ?

raja, jump down a deep well head first thanks buddy
1) Accept: Restless & Wild.
2) Accept: Metal heart
3) Accept: Balls to the Walls.
..
;)
OK. My Non-accept list of 80:ies metal albums....
1) Black Sabbath: Headless Cross.
2) Blue Oyster Cult: Imaginos.
3) Mötörhead: Another Perfect Day.
4) Metallica: Justice for All (horrible sound mix though).
5) Black Sabbath: Heaven & Hell
6) Slayer: South of Heaven (this could be even #1 when I think about
it more).
7) Mercyful Fate: Don't Break the Oath.
8) Deep Purple: Perfect Strangers
9) Black Sabbath: Mob rules.
10) Helloween: Keeper of the seven keys #1 (I think I'd chosen Gamma
Ray's Heading for Tomorrow for this slot but I checked and it was
published feb 1990....).
Strangely I have never been any special fan of Back in Black
eventhough I really like AC/DC. Also according all the specs I should
like Judas Priest/Iron Maiden more than I actually do...(I also only
recently have started to like more and more Ozzy's solo career). Dio's
solo albums lack consistency for me. Always some great songs but then
a lot of chaff included in the mix.
.mikko
Heaven & Hell is pretty good pick.
I personally can't listen to Black Sabbath because they're mean to
animals.
I love bats, they're kinda cute~~
Big Dio fan?
Definitely, but I like his Rainbow stuff even more...
The Nordic countries are big into death metal (Opeth) and black metal
(Ulver). How come you are not into it?

Opeth and 80:ies do not match... ;) and 80:ies Death Metal....that was
just bad compared to best thrash metal....
For me Opeth is #2 of them all (after Accept of course)
.mikko
What do you think of Black metal? Have you heard Ulver's Bergtatt
album? I was listening to it today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2Qrz1dH6jc
Death, Opeth and Ulver seem to be the highest rated extreme metal
bands from the 90s
I will have to check out Accept then... Opeth is one of my favorite
bands (top 1 in personal rotation in the last 6 months)
> Death, Opeth and Ulver seem to be the highest rated extreme metal

The better Death is the Death from the '70s.

Seems like the lead singer is trying to sound like Brian Johnson of AC/
DC
The black punk band? I've listened to their demo a few times and it's
very good.
Music is very cool 80's metal, but the voice is very grating for me.
/weird from a guy who likes death metal AND Rush, but there you have
it :D
Yes, those are the guys. They went straight from the "youngsters
entering the studio for the first time" phase to the "middle-aged
comeback tour with a replacement for our deceased guitarist" phase,
completely skipping the 35 years of struggle, success, and notoriety
in between. :)
Well everyone knows Airbourne (Aussie band) but this swedish band
combines AC/DC and Accept: ;)

.mikko
Well I only like Opeth (from dm genre) and I never mentioned anything
about Rush (it was Raja who did). Rush is OK but I am far from being
any fan. But from opposite spectrum: I really like Pink Floyd.
.mikko
No, I meant that it is weird for *me* to complain about a voice, given
that I love Rush and like a lot of Death Metal numbers (Morbid Angel,
Sepultura, Entombed, Opeth, Meshuggah, and selected songs from
others :)

Oh. I understood your OP wrong ;)
.mikko
No problem :)
I could probably stomach it on small doses. I'm like that with
Meshuggah. I like the music and the rhythmic complexity, but the voice
turns me off after a few songs. So I listen to a bit like once a month
or so. Gotta love Tomas Haake... sometimes I listen too closely and
find my breathing has gone off-rhythm :D
Technically Accept is older band than AC/DC as basis (the singer has
been same 1968-86, 1992-07) has been formed 1968 (started with another
name until renamed itself Accept mid-70:ies). And as B.Johnson moved
to AC/DC 1980...
.mikko
Nice. Although they borrowed some from Ludvig van...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mVW8tgGY_w
> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq0khKsgthY
This is good also but now it bothers me being certain they borrowed a
tune from Purple but I can't get in my head which song...
As a Purple fan I should know....hmmm...A Highway Star if you turn it
slo-mo?
Generally they have credited their "classical music" borrowings at
their records (there are a couple of more they have borrowed for
quitar solos like sabre dance etc).
.mikko
You always ask that...
I've always liked so called melodic heavy metal. Just because I'm from
certain country does not mean I should listen to certain type of music
or specific bands...
May I present you to real Finnish music...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nH3gheBxkEE
I noticed you're a big Purple fan, sticking Perfect Strangers in top10.
I'd include Purple too as #1...if collection albums are allowed.
(Deepest Purple)

Ok, I got it. Although it's such a small sequence of tunes but I think
identical...but little slower in Accept version.
Accept:

Purple:

See?
The biggest problem with Rush they always managed to sneak 2-3 crap
songs even in their best albums (Fly by Night, 2112, A Farewell To
Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures). And of
course they have truckload of other crap albums.
: 1. Slayer - Reign In Blood
: 2. AC/DC - Back in Black
: 3. Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
: 4. Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction
: 5. Motorhead - No Sleep Till Hammersmith [LIVE]
: 6. Sodom - Persecution Mania
: 7. Iron Maiden - Live After Death [LIVE]
: 8. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath
: 9. Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
: 10. Rush - Exit... Stage Left [LIVE]
AC/DC always distance themselves from metal...
My 100% objective "Best of the '80s metal/hard rock albums" (live albums
not included):
10. Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys pt 1
9. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
8. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith
7. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
6. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
5. Faith No More - The Real Thing
4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
3. Iron Maiden - Powerslave
2. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
1. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
If it was top 20, it would have: Motörhead, rest of the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica
albums, Queensryche, Dio. Never really liked AC/DC or GNR.
: Opeth and 80:ies do not match... ;) and 80:ies Death Metal....that was
: just bad compared to best thrash metal....
: For me Opeth is #2 of them all (after Accept of course)
I used to hate all growling vocals, but I've grown to like some of them...
generally those who mix it with clean vocals as it makes a great effect...
Opeth is awesome, Amorphis too...Dark Tranquility are amongst by new-found
favourites.
Ok, all us 3 Finns are metalheads then. How about Sakari? :)
No kidding...
At least beginning of their song is very much like...
Hemispheres only has four "songs." Which two or three are crap?
The big one :) And counts as 4 songs ;-) I thought Cygus 1 in A
Farewell To Kings was pretty good (but quite inferior to Xanadu). But
the sequel is pretty boring.
Anyone who likes Kim Clijsters cannot be a metalhead :)
You should drop the hard rock label then, none of these are hard rock
>
> If it was top 20, it would have: Mot rhead, rest of the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Metallica

So you dislike two of the best hard rock bands of the 80s :-)
Europe and Def Leppard?
Book II is actually a way better piece in terms of musical coherence
(and complexity, something you seem in love with) of their "long
pieces". Book I is kind of like a bunch of song pieces thrown
together.
(though the little acoustic guitar epilogue is completely lame. The
song had finished perfectly already!)
hardly... I like complexity but the type of which of complexity which
is complex for the sake of complexity. I like good music, wouldn't
pigeonhole myself to one style. I seem to like rock, classical, jazz,
funk and electronic music much more than folk, country, pop/r&b, and
rap.

Thats true. but it kicks ass.... Book II is quite wimpy by Rush
standards.

Both are pop metal, not hard rock. Hard rock is blues based. 80s metal
is more neo-classical based.
But in 80's Europe was considered as Heavy Rock/metal. (Although perhaps
grinned at a bit...)
Basically all long hair stuff was heavy metal and only sub-category I
recall of was speed metal. Nowadays there seems to be a specific
category for every band...doh.
: You should drop the hard rock label then, none of these are hard rock
Can't help it that the hard rock sucks compared to metal... :)
No, really, I meant to do a pure metal list as I am not qualified to
make a hard rock list, but I wanted to include Faith No More who probably
are more rock than metal. They were hugely influental.
> Both are pop metal, not hard rock. Hard rock is blues based. 80s metal
> is more neo-classical based.
Stravinsky's 1920s pieces? Prokofiev's "Classical Symphony"? These are
metal influences?
Or may be you are a true metalhead who cannot like anything else?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo-classical_metal
The 1980s saw the birth and rise of neo-classical metal as a distinct
subgenre[1], although classical influences could be heard in the
compositions and improvisations of prominent musicians from the
earliest beginnings of heavy metal throughout its evolution. Early
classical influences within hard rock and heavy metal are most notably
found in the playing of Ritchie Blackmore[1], Uli Jon Roth, and Randy
Rhoads[1]. The styling existed mainly with guitarists but was also
present with other instrumentalists, such as Yes keyboardist Rick
Wakeman.
The popularization and growth of neo-classical metal is closely
related to the ascension of the guitar "shredding" movement[1], as
many neo-classical metal guitarists took inspiration from virtuoso
classical musicians such as Niccolo Paganini and Frederic Chopin.
LOL -- metalheads at work making mincemeat out of musical concepts
while adding to their bulging store of OCD-inspired subgenres.
: Or may be you are a true metalhead who cannot like anything else?
I do listen to all kinds of stuff (sometimes even MTV pop, though
not so much in recent years anymore). It's just that metal has
more good music than other genres...
Someone like GNR, they do have good songs...like five of them. But
Iron Maiden has something like five entire ALBUMS worth of just as good
songs as best GNR songs.
This is why Iron Maiden is metal GOAT. Their best form is not exceptional
compared to other great bands, but they have far more good stuff than
anyone else.
Genre wankery has really gone over the top. "We play doom-ish folk metal with
some Norwegian black metal influences". Well, that's nice to know.
Genre classification can be quite eductional. When you hear Folk Metal/
Black Metal, you know the album is going to have a combination of loud
growling songs and slow mellow acoustic guitar songs.
shoot me now
Could this be grounds for being blocked from the Beatles' newsgroup?
This is the limit.
There's a part of Inception not filmed where people die at a low level
dream and get stuck in a nightmare of 80s heavy metal.
I have two problems with Iron Maiden: 1) I really don't like Bruce's
voice (can't explain this) 2) I fail to see/hear the highlights of
their huge repertuare (they have a lot of good songs...but for me
their best songs are only good songs...not excellent, not classics.
Again: I *should* like Iron Maiden more but just can't.
.mikko
A lot of teens like them - go figure.
Watch the "Powerslave" video from the "Live After Death" show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhzVum55PT4
AWESOME!
You can't appreciate Bruce without seeing the lunatic in concert.
Now, let's move on to Slayer:
Interesting facts in the RiB Wiki:
The music is abrasive and faster than previous releases helping to push
the gap between thrash metal and its predecessor hardcore punk,[5] and
is played at an average of 210 beats per minute.[7]
Dang, that’s fast.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reign_in_Blood
It fit on 1-side of a cassette so you could flip it over and play it again!

GNR made only 3 albums (2 others were cover albums). Maiden made a lot
more. Yes Maiden is the better band, but comparing the number of good
songs both made is not a fair comparison. Also the best Maiden album
(The Number Of The Beast) is equal to the best GNR album (Appetite for
Destruction) in terms of quality.
The important factor is that Axl dances better.
lol... Axl is a big douchebag though
Of course it is a fair comparison. It's like comparing Safin to Sampras.
It is a no-brainer that Sampras is a greater player, even though peak form was
pretty equal.
Also the best Maiden album
: (The Number Of The Beast) is equal to the best GNR album (Appetite for
: Destruction) in terms of quality.
NOTB is not even in Maiden's top 3... :)
Okay whats their top 3. I am curious now.
lol. Really.
please don't feed the retard
please don't feed the retard
Is there a problem, officer?
: Okay whats their top 3. I am curious now.
1. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
-this has the best overall quality of all Maiden records, with even the worst songs being "above average" at least.
2. Powerslave
-contains couple of mediocre songs, but also some of the most iconic Maiden songs. Best sounding Maiden record,
with just the right balance of rough power & good production.
3. Somewhere in Time
-also very good overall quality with no actively bad songs. Awesome opener with soaring guitar parts. Overpolished
production and some unnecessary repetition in some songs take it down from perfection, though.
+ all the albums have just totally awesome covers.
But Piece of Mind and NOTB are great albums too, no question...
Many consider Somewhere in Time as somewhat as a weakling. But I don't
think it is that bad. But the albums like the most are Iron Maiden and
The Number Of the Beast. The Killers is not so good. Seventh Son is
their most prog, but somewhat boring (they are decent at doing this
prog stuff, but not in the league of say Yes or even Rush). Powerslave
and Piece of Mind has some really awesome songs, but some clunkers. I
did not find many faults with their debut and The Number Of The Beast.
-SiT has great songs, it's just that they are not the songs usually associated
with the album. And sadly, the band does not play them live anymore.
-the debut has classics, but poor production. NotB is a great album, but contains
few stinkers, and some of the better songs are way overplayed so I've got
bored of them (particularly Run to the Hills).
-don't personally like Killers, but some people think it's their best. Those
people generally despise Bruce era...
I never fall this era crap. Many great bands had a revolving door line
up (Yes, Hawkwind, Deep Purple come to mind) but they still made many
good albums.
Well, Ripper era in Judas Priest was generally thought terrible. Blaze era
in Maiden wasn't that great either. Of course, it is debatable how much the
singers themselves were to blame. Black Sabbath...difficult to say. I am
not that familiar with Martin era Sabbath. Some seem to love it even though
it was a commercial failure. Arguably present Ozzy era is their worst, as they
aren't doing any new material...
And Metallica certainly was seriously hurt by Burton's death, and never were
the same again...
Bands typically flake out after 10-12 years... I have heard ever seen
a band at their peak past the 12th year. The latter shit eras should
not really count.
