Look, Hugh Symes (the guy that does the graphics for Rush) I'm SURE has
better things to do then sit and contemplate grand hidden secret meanings
and puzzles to hide in the album art work for fans that have nothing
better to do then to sit and over alalyze the art work!!
The first thing that YOU ALL MUST KNOW is that the stone person on the
cover is a historical artifact. When early Inuits (or Eskimos for the
low-brows) migrated across the tundra near the Artic, they built these
roughly 5 to 6 foot stone people. This was their way of leaving something
behind to represent themselves. In essence their history books, or
their... ECHO!!!! YES! WOW! AN ECHO!!
Mr. Symes is a very clever and creative man. Oh sure... they could
have put some guy screaming into a canyon on the cover but that would be
too obvious, instead he thought about it a bit, did some research and came
up with a very elegent way of saying "echo." Rush is NOT trying to give
you hints about breaking up, or about a new direction, or about the end of
the world.
The second thing you must remember is that RUSH IS FUNNY!! They have a
very good sense of humour!! So Mr. Symes made the 5 foot rock person look
like it was 500 feet tall!! The mountin climbers (yes there is 3 for a
reason,) are only intended for scale relation. Come on. loose the
interwoven "hidden" meaning many of you are looking for, and it's actully
kinda funny right!??
Also have a look on the inside. The rock person has a "No U-turn" sign
on it's head!! The mountin climbers have their hands thrown up in
victory!! (CD verson only) They climbed up the mountins, and up the rock
person to put a no U-turn sign on it's head! IT'S FUNNY!!! COME ON YOU
PEOPLE!!! LIGHTEN UP!! Yes Rush is the greatest band in the world, but
their not trying to confuse you!!! Relax people!
I would also suggest to those of you who have trouble with image
interpretation to go to a class, of buy a book on Image theory, and/or
cultural studies. It's well worth it.

(Sorry this was so long, but I got frustrated
reading other peoples "over ambitious"
interpretations. Some of them need to have
their heads tested for an echo.)

Rush Rules...

I'm with you, for the most part, but let's get the guy's name right,
O-tay? See my Power Lines post for more on the cover!

Yes, well said, finally. It has been kind of funny to watch the "over
ambitious" theorizing about this but it is not that complicated. There
are a lot of clever images and references but there is no grandiose "I
buried Paul" kind of hidden message.

Actually it was Neil Peart's idea, which he got from his motorbike travel to Yellowknife. It's a cairn, or as the Inuits call them: inukshuks, meaning "in the likeness of man." A normal cairn is picked straight up, often descending in size, but the inukshuks were piled into manlike figures. In Canada the Inuit used them as trail markers but they were also used in the Americas by Indians and are still used today in National Parks. Pearl writes, in his book Ghost Rider, that he wanted it used as the cover art because he was "struck by the power of this human symbol in a hostel land."
