Take a look at the ESL video. If you look real hard, I think
there's one point where you see a black guy. Of course, this was in
Canada, at a RUSH concert, so the guy really looks out of place! I think
he might have taken a wrong turn somewhere.
BTW, why do you feel they or anybody else is a 'white' sounding band?
IMHO bands produce music to reach everybody not a select group,
having a said that there is always the minority who pervert music and
other forms of communication to spread their messages of hate.
Hari
'You mean to tell me I'm not BLACK?' Steve Martin - The Jerk
Dan, there are lots of black people in Canada. In fact the first African
inhabitant of Canada was supposedly a French slave who came with Jacques
Cartier. Many came during the American Revolution, others to escape
slavery. And lots of Carribean folks have immigrated in the last 30 years.
::Hmmm, I'm Indian asian does that count as 'black'? ;0)

I was merely curious, figuring that there had to be some blacks reading
this ng that could enlighten me as to how they feel about the band,
whether or not they think Rush has a "white sound", etc.
Hey, let's face it: If we somehow could figure out the ratio of whites
who buy Rush cd's vs. blacks, it would probably be 80 to 1, or some
crazy number like that! Why? Apparently because the music doesn't appeal
to blacks enough for them to buy the cd (which is completely cool with
me - listen to whatever you want!) So how then, did my original post
kill you? I was trying to learn something about another race, and you
were getting nervous that I wasn't being "politically correct" and that
I might offend somebody, would be my guess.
I think it has more to do with the divided society we live in, rather
than actual preferences. How many Blacks have actually heard Rush?
What's popular in Black culture are styles like rap, R&B,
jazz, and maybe blues, but very little rock 'n roll. Rush isn't even
that well known among circles of "white" music, which is mainly pop and R
'n R. I think a lot of it comes down to exposure. I think that Rush
could have a much greater audience if they were played all the time, and
people were, in a way, forced to listen to them. Their music could find
a place in any peoples hearts. I have met Blacks who liked Rush. I have
sat down with people who ripped Rush, without really knowing anything
about them, and forced them to listen. Once they opened their minds and
let down their preconceived notions, they liked what they heard. I think
that Rush could cross any racial border if given the chance.

A couple of the lead members of Fishbone have stated that RUSH
was a huge influence on them....they kind of joked about the fact that
they were these young black kids growing up at a time when they were

(which they also did), while also grooving to Hemispheres, et al.

Rush is my FAVORITE band than any other, and of course I totally agree.

Rush is one of my favorite bands. And just what is a "masculine
sounding" band? My husband and I like a wide variety of music, and we
have never labeled any of it masculine or feminine music. Just curious.

ah yes, once again the infamous "Do Females Like Rush" post rears its head.
Yes, I love Rush.
No, I was not introduced to them by a boyfriend or male relative. I
discovered them on my own.
I love the lyrics. I love the vocals. I love the music.
I love the fact that Rush hasn't been invovlved in scandal.
I hate the fact that eMpTV will rarely play a video from them, but
begrudgingly accept that fact.
Yes, my friends give me funny looks when I play Rush. Sometimes
admittedly, I get embarassed, as if it is somehow wrong for a young
female to like Rush. I don't know why this is.
I have no favorite album or song. I simply cannot choose between them all.
I do like Victor.
I have only seen them in Concert twice *sigh* This will soon be rectified.

Yes we do. I've been listening for over 10 years and find many, many
females attending the concerts.
I haven't found another group that I enjoy listening to as much. In

Hope you got to enjoy one of the concerts.

I love Rush! They've been my favorite band for a long time and I own all
of their albums on CD. I keep my Rush collection separate and sacred from
the rest of my music. I know plenty of other females who also like Rush.
Their music is original, and they have thoughtful lyrics that actually
mean something. I can't stand the mainstream, whiny, "I'm so in love" crap
that crowds the radio waves.
Why, may I ask, should a female not like Rush? What do you think makes
them so "masculine"?
Because not many females like them !^)>
Zach
I too found Rush on my own, in the 8th grade (I'm pushing 30 now), and
have been quite the fanatic since. Though I've been accused of having
masculine tastes in other things as well: comic books, science fiction,
computer/video games... most of my peers are starting to have babies and
I'm raving about Babylon 5 and Final Doom instead...

I'm not female, but my wife is and she has been a Rush fan for over 10
years (no I will NOT reveal her age). She (now we) own almost all of

made me (as if I was resisting) by tickets for the upcoming show in DC.
I think she rates as a female fan :)
Finally! This is the kind of response I've been waiting for! I was never
interested in hearing nervous, pc white people try to "protect" everyone
from my naive, racist post. But after reading your reply (and a few

Me Too!
It doesn't seem all that out of place, as one so eloquently stated under
this topic w.r.t. some black fan at a concert in Canada.
I've been listening too Rush since 1978. I don't think being black is
anymore out of place than Rush incorporating rap into RTB or Geddy being
an avid Billie Holliday fan, as he stated in an interview.
It's obvious Rush is open minded, now if we could just convince thier
fans. :-)
Now what's with some of the topics in this group(i.e. Do any females
listen to Rush, Do any black people listen to Rush)? What next, do any
people over 65 listen too Rush or do any gays listen to Rush too??? Now
wouldn't that be something if we could
find a gay black female over 65 who listens to Rush?
Might be? MIGHT BE???! I think he is the most original, most soulful
bass players in the world. The guy is amazing. Along those lines, is
Neil Peart possibly the greatest drummer alive? I saw him @ the Buffalo
show, and when he did his solo, it was "Sit back and be amazed" time!
Well, I'm not white a white female, but I am kind of short, though I am a

Bzzzzzt!!! Wrong answer! I got into Rush on my own in high school. The
local "classic rock" station used to play them a lot, and when Presto came
out I was hooked, bought the album on my own, and have been a fan since.
No "male help" required. :-)
FYI, finally got to see them live for the first time eer last nice in
Philly! Great show! Sound could have been better, but that's the problem
with the Spectrum, it's not designed for good accoustics. Glad I had my
ear plugs tho!
Somehow I lucked into a GREAT seat at the last minute - 10th row on the
lower left side, right across from Alex. Can't believe I got the seat at
about 1 pm the day of the show.
Anyway... I would love to get a few audience recordings from this tour. I
don't have a lot of Rush to trade back, a few boots, but I have tons tons
tons of Pink Floyd concert recordings. Everyting from '68-'94. Other
bands too. Send me your trading list, and I'll send ya mine!

*sigh* What would've been sexist is if he had said, "since more men
tend to convert women to Rush than the reverse, women are `inferior'"
(whatever that means). The FACTS are that: based on the hundreds of Rush
fans I've encountered here and in person, more men listen to Rush; and,
the few women Rush fans that I've known *in person* has been converted
by a male. If you read any kind of moral judgement into this, then...
you are reading a moral judgement into this. Nothing more.
If it helps, I didn't get into Rush on *my* own--- a guy I used to know
in high school was THE Rushmeister. It was impossible to go over to his
house or ride the bus without him having you listen to Rush. After he
graduated, I was like, "hmm." I had started identifying Rush on the radio,
too. So I picked up HYF which had just come out. I got Presto when it
came out, but was dissapointed (it took me many years to appreciate it).
When I and another friend saw them in the Spring of '90 though, that
clinched it for me. By that time, I was buying tapes (except I bought
Archives instead of the first three individually). The next year, I
stared replacing them with CDs. HYF was the first CD I ever purchased.
p/g was the last tape I bought, and it is still one of my least favorites,
while HYF remains at the top.

Definitely AFTK, and my favorite song is Xanadu. The poem by S.T.

that. I love '70s Rush, am lukewarm to the mid-late '80s, and am

No one can top Rush in my book. Jethro Tull, Zeppelin, Floyd, The Dead,

Well I pretty much equate lyrics with music since they have to

The first Rush album I heard was Permanent Waves, which I stole from

Music first, then lyrics/philosophy (although I don't agree with

well... I like to think I look beyond such things. :) (Although I will

>What percentage, if any, of your female friends also like Rush?
Most of my friends are male. (I'm a computer science major, and most of
my classes are the typical male-dominated math/physics/etc.) But of the
few female friends I have,... Less than half? I know 2 other females
who like them a lot, and a few others who tolerate them because their
other friends or boyfriend likes them.
>What was the first Rush song that you heard, that turned you on to

After ASOH was released, a local station played "Marathon" repeatedly.
That song turned me on to the band. Meanwhile, my brother listened to
them for *years*. He let me listen to his other Rush CDs, and in the
process, I realized that there were a LOT of Rush songs I'd always
liked, but I never knew who did them! Imagine my joy when I found out
the same band who did Marathon also did Entre Nous, Red Barchettta, Tom
Sawyer, Subdivisions, The Big Money (aka "that monopoly board song" - I
was about 10 when that came out), Force Ten, Prime Mover, The Spirit of
Radio... All those songs I'd always loved were done by the same band!

This was in no means an attempt to stereotype females
that do or don't like Rush ie, "better" or "lesser" based
on the same. I find it interesting, better yet fascinating, that
I can think of no woman that I have ever known ( Not that
I can lay claim to a significant statistical basis opon which
one can attempt rest such postulations in any absolute
sense. ) to like Rush other than in the context that of those
who tollerated them because of their boyfriends. I was just
curious, as to those that do, as to the why, when and what.
Please don't take the question in a prejudicial or judgemental
context. If you already have; I apologize.
On the other hand, if I should ever find myself in the market

Same here. Coleridge is hands down my favorite poet. I met his
style first with Iron Maiden's version of "Rime of the Ancient Mariner."
Then, as my musical tastes expanded, I found "Xanadu"! I love "Kubla
Khan" so much I did my senior year high school English paper on it! :)

Ian Anderson is one of the only rock lyricists I can think of who
can equally Neil Peart!

I've always felt they tend to intellectualize both the music and
the lyrics, yet unlike the VERY progressive groups of the 70s, they still
kept some very important rock influences.

I heard about Rush and their 20min song "2112" from my best friend
after he moved to Virginia. He was a drummer, and so am I, so I was
shocked when he sent me a group of tapes including copies of "Hemispheres"
(technically my first Rush song and album), "Permanent Waves," "Moving
Pictures," and "Exit Stage Left." Now I only need to get "Grace Under
Pressure" to complete my collection!
On the off subject of Jethro Tull, what's everybody's fave album?
Now and Forever Born Brittish But Strangly Transported to America,

I can't pick a fovorite album because I like them all, but I do have a
favorite song on each album:
RUSH: Finding My Way
Fly By Night: Anthem & In the End
Caress of Steel: No One at the Bridge
2112: Something for Nothing
A Farewell to Kings: Xanadu
Hemispheres: Circumstances & La Villa Strangiato
Permanent Waves: Freewill & Natural Science
Moving Pictures: Witch Hunt
Signals: The Weapon
Grace Under Pressure: The Enemy Within
Power Windows: Marathon
Hold Your Fire: Force Ten
Presto: Scars
Roll the Bones: Ghost of a Chance & Roll the Bones
Counterparts: Animate & Double Agent
Test for Echo: Driven
Other Bands (and Artists):
RUSH, Queen, Pete Townsend, Suzanne Vega, Depeche Mode, Annie Lennox,
Sinead O'Conner,The Pretenders,Bush, Nine Inch Nails, Elvis Presley,Otis
Redding, Mozart, Beethoven (and others too numerous to mention)
This list is sort of in order of preference (RUSH is always #1), but on
any given day, I would place the classical before the rock, or the R & B
before the industrial depending on the mood I'm in (it's kind of like
comparing apples to oranges, they're just not comparable).
I think I like the music and the philosophy of the lyrics equally.
Percentage of female friends that like Rush: approx. 3 of 10

First song that turned me onto RUSH was Entre Nous.
