...we've got a secret weapon, and his name is Jere Lehtinen.
Sure, it's nice having guys like Modano and Billy G for that in your face
offensive threat, but having Lehtinen, working in relative obscurity I might
add, standing just outside the limelight, mucking and grinding in the
corners and popping up in front of the net out of nowhere, is the most
lethal weapon in the Stars arsenal. His team leading 28 goals will certainly
help a Guerin-less Stars offense. And, as if the aforementioned weren't
enough, the defensive style he plays adds an invaluable ingredient to this
already defensively strong team. This guy allow the Hatchers and Bouchers of
the team to do something besides lurk around the blue-line.
The scary thing to most of Dallas' opponents is that Jere plays on the third
line of forwards, fondly referred to as the KLM line. ( Kapanen[Niko],
Lehtinen and Morrow[Brendan] ) Most teams would have these guys as a second
line! That really speaks volumes to the Stars depth. Now if we can just get
Tugnutt to pay closer attention to the puck until the return of the great
Marty Turco, we just mind find ourselves in good shape for the play-offs.
Bring 'em on!!!
Thanks again to our beleaguered friends in Beantown for Bill. I think we'll
do o.k. in his absence.

Go Stars!

I bleed as blue as anyone else in StL, but I fear without a better
(MUCH better) net-minder, we are doomed for another early exit. If we
don't overtake Detroit in the Central, then we'll probably have to
face Colorado (or maybe Vancouver) in the first round. And, it
wouldn't get any easier after that!

As far as Dallas is concerned, we are as balanced offensively and
defensively as they are, (esp. when Weight, Tkachuk and Cayanek(sp?)
are back in the lineup). The difference is the goalie. While Turco
is a whack-job (trying to take players heads off with his stick), he
sure can stop the puck! None of our guys can match what Turco is
capable of.

Bottom line, Dallas still doesn't scare me as much as Detroit or
Colorado. We've proven we can hang with Dallas. We still haven't
proven we can hang with the other two :(

Kevin (It'd be *really* nice if Pronger comes back full strength for
the playoffs, but I am still not convinced that would put us over the
hump without a better goalie)

I think tonight is the benchmark game for Blues goaltending. If Sanford
beats the Dead Things, we dump Freddy-B and continue on with Sanford. If
not, we get Burke. Then dump both of those dead bastages (Johnson and
Brathwaite) in the off season (if not one of them before the deadline) and
then continue with Burke/Sanford next year. Either way, I like our chances
with either Sanford or Burke. Anything else and the Blues are just kidding
themselves.

Should be a great game tonight between Wing and Blue. My pick? I'll take the
Wings at home just aboot anytime. The Blues are definitely a contender this
year, but, without a solid net-minder, this team is toast in round one. (
Seriously doubt that they have the Stars number though, pal!! ) The young
goalie they've been using lately looks promising, but don't hang your hat on
him for the playoffs. What ever happened to them getting Burke from the
'Yotes? Was this just Melrose fodder?
Anyhoo...
Here's how I see the playoffs working out this year-------
West.Conf., Rd.1
Dallas vs. Edmontonjenson- Stars in 5
Colorado vs. Minnesota- Avs in 6 ( Co. rising, Minn. stumbling )
Detroit vs. Anaheim- Wings easily in 4 games ( I smell a blowout! )
Vancouver vs. St.Louis- Great series!! Canucks in 7
East.Conf. Rd.1
Ottawa vs. N.Y.I- Sens. in 6
New Jersey vs. Boston- Devils in 5 ( B's will put up a good fight )
Washington vs. Tampa Bay- Bolts in 7 ( My upset pick of the first round. The
'Bulin Wall' will prove too tough for the Caps )
Philadelphia vs. Toronto- Flyers in 7 ( This will be a knuckle chucking
series, folks! )
West.Conf.Rd.2
Dallas vs. Vancouver- Stars in 7 ( Bertuzzi, Naslund & co. will wear Dallas'
defense out. This could greatly benefit Colorado ;) )
Detroit vs. Colorado- Avs. in 6 ( Sorry, Prof. It will be a fantastic
series, but the resurgent Avalanche will be too much for a tired Red Wings
squad to handle.)
East.Conf.Rd.2
Ottawa vs. Philadelphia- Flyers in 6 ( This is where the Sens choke.)
New Jersey vs. Tampa Bay- Devils in 5 ( No Cinderella story this year.)
West.Conf.Finals
Dallas vs. Colorado- Stars in 7 ( Familiar territory for both teams. It
comes down to Turco vs. Roy. Take a bow Patty.)
East.Conf.Finals
Philadelphia vs. New Jersey- Flyers in 7 ( Upset pick. Devils will be
stunned by losses early in the series, and will not recover.)
Stanley Cup Finals
Dallas vs. Philadelphia- Dallas in 6 ( The return of Hitchcock to Dallas
will not be friendly. Home ice advantage will help the favored Stars
greatly.)

That's just my take. I'd be interested in hearing yours.
Discuss.

Chances are pretty good that your guys will face the Canucks. It's a little
late in the season to take-over the Wings.

Uhhh, time-out there Kev. As balanced offensively? Dallas has 4 of the most
solid forward lines in the league right now. Of course, that is with Guerin
in the lineup. The Blues come close, but I'd put the Stars 3rd and 4th lines
up against your guys any day. You do make a good point about the defensive
match-ups. Still, I'd give the Stars a slight edge there. The addition of
Phillipe Boucher to the squad really gave Dallas a boost.
I believe the difference between these teams goes far beyond goaltending.
( BTW, I've never seen Turco as being a 'whack-job'. His predessesor, Ed
Belfour, fit that bill quite nicely though. When did you ever see Marty bean
someones head with his stick?)

As crushed as I would be that my beloved Stars didn't make it, I would love

would have to pull for a Toronto vs. Vancouver series. Somehow, I just don't

The Pist-Dispatch was worried about Sanford getting the yips--and he got 3
goals of yips, dammit. Phone's ringing in Phoenix, I'd wager.

I think it's hilarious to watch the P-D twirl around like Linda Blair with
their feelings toward the goalies. One minute Johnny's the second coming of
Roy or Plante, and as soon as Sanford gets hot Johnny's work ethic has been
a problem "for some time". One minute Freddy's the ultimate team player,
keeping Johnny on his toes, then he's a tomato can.

As for the playoffs, I'll say it again. DET or COL until someone beats 'em.
(That's why I figure the Lakers in the NBA, but who gives a shit about
bball?). Since I'm a pessimistic masochist, I therefore say that the Blooz
are going to come up short--until they don't!

And under the heading of a million monkeys typing on a million typewriters;
sooner or later Vancouver or Ottawa will step up.

I can't see Cujo being the answer for DET. (The P-D actually gave a
shout-out for Keenan running Cujo out of town!)

I sit today, March 7th, 2003, and tell you that if DET wins w/ Cujo betw.

Never happen dude. The Canuckleheads always start strong and then screw
up all over the place. I'm really impressed with how their doing this
year, dont get me wrong! 14 wins in a row, and some of those were

Don't you play for the Redwings? They do have a player they call
"The Professor" or were you on Gilligan's Island? LOL.
The Two KIds and an Old Goat line will carry the Redwings along ways
in the playoffs along with the grind line. I wonder if Dallas/St.Louis
wishes they had Hull and St.Louis wishes they had Shanahan back? The
Redwings just need to get another defenseman and than they will beat
Minnesota, and St.Louis in the playoffs, but Dallas vs. Detroit might
last forever with about 5 or 6 O.T.'s per game.

I must admit, I don't know *that* much about Dallas' 3/4 lines, so you
very well could be right about the fourth line! But our first three
lines are as good as just about anyone else's. Our scoring attack has
never been so balanced! Our fourth line is usually just out there to
hurt people ;-)

It was the second time we got together this season. The Blues won
5-3. It was a pretty undisciplined game all around by Dallas. They
had 7 penalties in the 3rd, including 4 in about a 90 second span.
Turco got a penalty for highsticking. It should have been called more
like "Attempting to behead." He swung his stick at one of the Blues
just outside his crease like a kid trying to put a T-Ball in flight
(luckily he didn't get him square). I can't remember if it was
Mellanby or Tkachuk though. Here is a link to NHL.com's recap of the
game. http://nhl.com/onthefly/scoreboard/recaps/69_2_recap.html I
have also seen him do some other aggressive things (much like Roy),
but much less serious. I will give you the point though that Belfour
was much crazier! That guy is a mental case!

Don't think I am knocking Turco! You guys dumped Turd-ek on us and
now have one of the most promising netminders in the league! The guy
is just a competitor through and through. Not like our flake Johnson.
I just think Turco needs to get better control of his emotions and
he'll be fine... he may have already too, I haven't seen him play in a

At one time I was a huge Roman Turek fan. I was upset that we let him go. I
was even more upset to see you guys pick him up. At the time I questioned
the logic behind allowing the Blues to get a guy from us who, in all
likelyhood, will turn around and kick our asses some day. On the one hand
I'm glad that never happened. On the other hand, I hate to see the "Big

It's nice to see that they didn't stand-pat at the trade deadline. Hopefully
this gives them a little boost going into the playoffs. Still going to be a
first rounder with the Bolts, I think. As a 3rd or 6th seed, though, remains
to be seen. Should be a great series to watch. I'm thinking that Kolzig vs.
Khabibulin will be one of the better first round match-ups.
We'll see, eh!?

I'm guessing that Espn/Espn 2 will most likely ignore this series.
The Torono/Philadelphia or the Boston/New Jersey series will be the
Eastern Conference match ups that will get national exposure.

You may be right on the money with that. It certainly makes me wonder what,
if any, W.C. series they might 'ignore'. I imagine that they will have a
hard time televising every game nationaly. My guess is that the first
rounder with V.C. vs whomever might be the odd one out. We'll see.
btw, who is your team of choice?

Go Stars!!!!!!
