Anyone have a clue about what kind of equipment Geedy used to get that
unique sound? I like the sound on Hemipheres and Moving Pictures best.

He was using Rickenbacker basses back then , forget the amps he used but
look at the credits on Hemispheres. It might tell you.

Ged used basically the same amp setup for years. On those albums, Ged used
Ashley pre-amps, BGW 750 power amps, Thiele Design speaker cabinets, and Ampeg
V4B's (both were 2x15" cabinets), in combination with a direct input to the
mixing board.

The bass on Hemispheres was the venerable Rickenbacker 4001.

Moving Pictures made exclusive use of his Fender Jazz bass, and for that
recording, he gave his preamps a lot more gain. That's how he got that zingy
sustaining sound.

listen to permanent waves - that is predominantly ric
listen to moving pictures - that is all fender jazz, the one that the
Geddy Lee sig model is based on, a black/white pickguard '72 with
black block inlays.

those two albums were recorded with pretty much the same rig - they
are a great way to compare the two basses.

although he played the ric predominantly on the mp tour, he also had
fenders along with him, check out the beginning of esl, 2 fender
headstocks are clearly visible among the forrest of rick necks

that tour.

I believe he didn't use a Rick for Moving Picture, though. He used the
Fender jazz bass. I forget which magazine, but it's one of the bass
magazines that did a dual interview with Lee and Les Claypool. Geddy says
it was a cheap fender jazz bass.

No sir. It's classic Geddy Lee with a little Rickenbacker on top.
