I wonder who invented donuts?
I dunno, probably, probably some genius.
- Geddy Lee
I've never seen the video or heard the music, but a quick web search led
me to the following info:
From http://www.mtv.com/mtv/music/reviews/archive/blather/pave_rev.html:
(MTV Music Reviews: Pavement, Brighten the Corners)
"Lead vocalist Stephen Malkmus, atonal and warbley a la Lou Reed,
continues to deliver semi-cocked sound bytes at times absurd:
Album-opener "Stereo" ponders the high-octave singing style of Rush's
Geddy Lee, wondering if Geddy actually talks like that in person."
From http://www.musicmonitor.net/reviews/pavement.html:
(Pavement: Brighten the Corners, by Andy Herrod)
The opening track, "Stereo," busts with some important questions for our
generation: "What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high?
I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?;" followed by the response
from someone else in the band: "I know him and he does."
From
http://www.addicted.com.au/html/hifi/Reviews/44.1kHz/Pavement/Brighten_The_Corners.html:
(Pavement Gets Psychedelic With Brighten The Corners, by Seth Mnookin)
The album starts with the infectious, anthemic "Stereo," which has
already produced the rock world's weirdest reference to Rush's Geddy Lee
as well as some hope that, after a discouraging 1996, 1997 will produce
good, occasionally even great music that you can throw on, get
in a car with your friends, and listen to
really loudly while driving around with the windows down.
From http://www.unl.edu/DailyNeb.arch/zzzzz/3-97/31/arts/pavement.html:
(Pavement "Brighten the Corners", Matador Records, Grade: A)
The lyrics are as twisted as ever. In the opening track alone, Malkmus
throws a sing-song attitude into words such as "Pigs they tend to wiggle
when they walk" and "the Kaiser has a cyst," and pokes indie fun at such
sacred rock institutions as Rush frontman Geddy Lee.
I don't know about the new pavement but on a different album the song
"stereo" It says...
"And what about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder
if he speaks like an ordinary guy?" "I know him; and he does"
cool huh.........
The song was also played oiver the PA right before they hit the stage in
Ottawa.
The Professor
Geddy, a sacred rock institution. This is one of the best descriptions/compliments I have
heard.
