::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Okay, I just heard one of the best covers of one of the best songs ever.
Now, I don't know much about Moby... All I know is that, for me, he's mood
music, in that if I feel like listening to orchestrated club music, I'll
probably listen to his stuff. I should probably call that old girlfriend of
mine who turned me onto his stuff, but anyway... The song is an old Mission
Of Burma song called "That's When I Reach For My Revolver", and let me just say
that Mr. Moby has done an excellent job of capturing MOB's style. Geez, I
can't get it out of my head! Anyone out there know if this is on a single
somewhere? Since the cash flow is in the negatives, I'd like to spend as
little scratch as possible. If anyone can help me out with finding the Moby
version on something that won't cost a testicle, I'll buy you a beer right
after I recommend you for sainthood!
There are quite a few good shows coming up this week... Ex-members of Gals
Panic converge on St. Louis tomorrow night, now known as Missile Command. You
have a rather challenging choice coming up friday night, The Solicitors, Man
Or Astro Man? or driving up to Champaign to check out the Scofflaws. No matter
which one you decide to attend, I'm sure you'll have an awesome time! And of
course, the two day Bosstones-Pietasters extravaganza! I haven't looked
forward to a pair of shows with this much intensity since Fugazi in '93! I
can hardly contain myself!!
Also, go out and pick up this week's Riverfront Times. There's a great
section on the top 10 buried stories of 1996. Really interesting stuff, more
fodder for you conspiracy theorists.
As promised in last week's issue, here is my brief dissertation on human
masturbatory fantasies. First off, I'll provide you with some stats. 50% of
all those interviewed were women, and 50% men. When asked the question, "Do
you masturbate?", 100% of the males pretended like they didn't hear me
correctly and replied with a somewhat shocked "what?" When I repeated the
question, and cleared up the fact that I wasn't gay and this wasn't a come-on,
all of them proceeded to divulge information your informer did not want to
know. As for the femmes, 50% smacked your humble narrator in the face while
unloading a vast dumpster of obscenities. After being hounded for a few
minutes though, the question was answered. The other half of the total women
polled were extremely tight-lipped (no pun intended.) Afterwards, I popped
the next question, "Who or what do you think about while "performing"? Then
came the replies. For the sake of shear boredom, I'm presenting the results
to you in these nicely constructed, allbeit somewhat confusing, bar-graphs
located below...
Of the people polled, how many masturbate? (Frequency is irrelevant.)

So, what have we learned today, kids? We've learned that most women yearn
for Brad Pitt, while a toss-up between Anna Nicole-Smith and money fester on
the men's side. We've learned that the better part of this intro, though
mildly entertaining, is totally screwball. We've also learned that Beaux,
aside from being a nice guy and a colossal Madness fan, is so extremely
sexually frustrated that he has to live vicariously through other people's sex
lives. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we've learned that in conducting
a poll, it is wise to interview more than just 4 people like I did.
Over and out...

::::: II. AS ALWAYS :::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The usual stuff goes a little like this: Keep me posted on upcoming shows.
Send me stuff that you have written so I can include it. Update me on new
shows. Write and submit. Tell me about a cool show coming to St. Lou. And
finally, drink coffee. Not only does it taste good, but it's good for you. We
all need a little help with our life from time to time, so, be good to the joe,
and the joe will be good to you.
If, for any reason, you:
00) Don't receive this on a thursday or a friday... Don't panic! Put the axe
down and take deep, cleansing breaths. It isn't a personal snub, it just
means that I'm quite occupied and I'll get it to you as soon as is
humanly possible.
52) Like what you see, and would like to express your overwhelming gratitude...
Then, by all means, do so. And tell me about how jolly-jack splendid it
would be if you received it every week in your very own email inbox.
Say, "Hey, Beaux, dude, it would be really super jolly-jack splendid if
I could have this fine, weekly periodical mailed to my very own email
inbox, dude."
63) Get an urge to write something... Uh, go make sure it's something you'd
like to write about. Then, when the planets are aligned, grab your
keyboard and squirt out some story, then send it my way. Yes, this is
a little more tasteful than what I had earlier.
94) Would like to inflict a beat-down on my five-dollar ass... You have my
permission, but only if it inspires you to tell me a story about your
childhood.

::::: III. COMING SOON :::::
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Shows are all-ages, unless noted. "(19+)" = 19 and over, dig? This is to
the best of my knowledge. The only way to be sure is to wear a condo, and to
call the club.
If you see a "???" anywhere on the listing, it means that whatever is
before it is either tentative, or a rumor.
If you see a "!" before the show date, that means that the information is
either new, or has been updated since the last issue.
The word in brackets after the band listing is my attempt at categorizing
the genre of the band. If there are no brackets and you can sum them up in a
word or two, tell me and I'll update the info. Please keep in mind that the
genre has absolutely nothing to do with the ideals of the band's members or
their record company, and has everything to do with how they sound. Got it?
Okay.
Also note, that a few of the clubs have been imposing an extra $2.00 door
charge on everyone under 21.
And, finally, if you would like to know how to get to a particular club,
email me and I'll send you directions as soon as I can, aw-ight?

BIM SKALA BIM - "Universal" CD [BS20282]
Just from checking out the cover of this, Bim's next adventure, I knew it
was gonna rock! Kinda reminds me of Man Or Astroman? :) In perusing the liner
notes, I couldn't help but notice that Vinny Nobile was absent from the
line-up. Then, while checking out the new Mash It Up compilation, I saw and
heard why. BTW- Check out Mr. Nobile's superb 'boning on the Suicide Machines'
full-length debut. But, alas, this is a review of neither. We're talking Bim
Skala Bim, here! And, let me begin by saying that Mark Paquin seems to be
making a smooth and balanced transition as the new 'bonesman. Before I start
picking it apart, lemme say that this is probably one of my most anticipated
releases of the year, and I was all but let down! "Red Eyes" is traditional,
balls-to-the-wall Bim, while the slick, rasta-like appeal of "Same Mistake" is
a cool turn that caught my attention instantly. A rather kickin' cover of
Johnny And The Pirates' "Shakin' All Over". (I know I've heard it before, but
I don't think it was The Who's version, I'm gonna have to go check out the
record stores.) "Three Legged Dog", and "Going Back" are probably my two
favorites on this album. They really hit that upbeat pop-ska marker that have
set Bim apart from the rest of the ska community. The final song, "Happy
Weekend" is a nice instro (more or less) farewell tune. Kinda reminds me of
the opening credits for all of those old cop shows. :) What can I say? It's
boss! Be sure to check out Road Rules and The Real World on MTV this summer.
No, I'm not plugging MTV, and yes, the shows and characters are excruciatingly
inane, but a bunch of Bim's new songs will be featured as bumper music! Keen,
eh? Now, only one question remains on my Universal-ized mind: When are these
boys coming back to St. Louis?!? It's been way too long!

THE BUSINESS - "The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth"
CD [Taang! 115]
This is classic, unrelenting Business. I have nothing bad to say about
these folks. Actually, I don't think I could say anything bad about them.
Their music means so much to me and has seen me through some really rough
times. No matter how I'm feeling, I put a Business album on, and it's an
instant pick-up. And this album is no exception! 14 strict, hard, in-your-
face, hooliganized drinking anthems by the masters of modern British street
punk. Apparently, they ran out of promo CD's by the time they got to St.
Louis, so my sincerest thanx go out to Mick who entrusted me to deliver the
goods on the new album to you fine people. (The goods being what you're
reading now.) From the get-go, you can tell this album is gonna rock!
"Spirit Of The Street", "One Thing Left To Say", "Southgate", and the title
track, "The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth", are my
favorites. The whole all-for-one-one-for-all feel of "Spirit", to the somewhat
cryptic lyrics of "One Thing". The classic awareness of hipocracy of "The
Truth...", to the old school oi! feel of "Southgate". No matter what anyone
says about these guys, they still rock. And they can play a crowd like no
one I've ever seen before. So, to me, it doesn't really matter if they're
doing it for fame or money. They'll continue to be one of my favorite bands
of all time, no matter what any of you neo-punks say. Got it? Thanks for
the terrific, allbeit a tad short, show, guys! Hope to see you again soon...

HEREAFTER - "Anthems Of Awakening.." 3-song Tape
A nice gathering of strong lyrics, and good, old-fashioned hardcore riffs.
I was digging on all three songs and am anxiously awaiting their next effort.
Songs include, "Nosey Parker", "Stumble & Fall", and "Combust", with my
favorite probably being "Stumble & Fall". If hardcore is your vibe, then, by
all means, take in their show, or send them 3 bux, and they'll float this fine
tape to you. Who says St. Louis' hc scene is dead?!

SIX FEET DEEP - "It Came From Six Feet Deep!!!" CD
Was that an accordian in there somewhere? When I first saw this disc, I
was so afraid it was gonna end up like every other typical ska-laced punk band.
Imagine my surprise when I popped in the CD and pressed play! The first track,
"No Way Out", really, genuinely impressed me, and by "Run Scooby Run", I was
toe-tapping, head-nodding-ly pleased. That's such a cool instrumental, by the
way! No doubt, it was inspired by every chase scene Scoob and Shaggy were ever
in. "Flores Para Los Muertos" struck me as just a little too upbeat for a song
about flowers for the dead, but, you know, I guess you do what you can, eh? :)
"Kamchatska", I think, is a russian folk dance. At any rate, SFD's take on it
sounds really cool. "Hourglass" was probably one of my favorite songs on the
album. It has that great 2Tone feel to it. The organ ska-beat, and tight-as-
fuck horns, you can't go wrong! They even tacked on 2 bonus (either that, or
they're extensions of "Switchblade") instro tracks at the end of the CD. All
in all, a very surprisingly awesome debut (?) from these SoCal ska boys. My
recommendations? Go out and buy this album right away, or order it through
BiB Records for 12 bux. You'll groove until you're Six Feet Deep!

VARIOUS - "Mash It Up Volume 4" CD [BS20242]
Wow. This is probably the best one in the series thus far. Kinda makes
me wish I was in Boston! :) It was really well-balanced from top to bottom.
Trad, 2Tone style, and the ever-present ska-punk. Any way you slice it, it's
a taste of Boston ska! Some of my personal highlights:
Beat Soup "Something To Be" -An excellent 3rd wave track with a catchy beat,
tight brass, and an awesome singer. I want more!
Bim Skala Bim "Run Joe" -An old 1940's jamaican mento song that just adds to
their throne in today's, as well as yesterday's, ska scene.
SMA "Number One" -A good example of good ol' punky New England ska. Danielle
on vox just wails! I'm hoping to hear more from these folks in the future.
Brass Planet "Why Can't We...?" -Ah, former Bim 'bone Vinny Nobile just happens
to be a part of this, just down-right rad, band. I can't wait to check out
more of their stuff!
Big D & The Kids Table "Tommy (1982)" -Great, high-energy ska-punk that's very
tight, considering they're a nine piece band.
Big Lick "Down The Drain" -My first experience with this band. I can see them
making a big splash it the ska pool. Sorry about the hair... :)
These acts were complimented nicely by Entrain, a cool-ass track by the mighty
Allstonians, and the return (?) of Steady Earnest. The Skavengers were quite
impressive, as were the ska-scaring Ska'd For Life. Oh yeah, the Skavoovie
song was really smooth, too. On the whole, this should be quite a success with
the fans, as it adds some great songs that we haven't heard before, and paves
the way for the Boston beat in the next century. I can't wait for Volume 5!

ANIMAL CHIN - "The Ins And Outs Of Terrorism" 6-song Tape [KFR001C]
I saw these guys when they opened for MU330 last friday, and was quite
surprised, considering the bad juju people on the internet were giving them.
To describe them without tripping into any stereotypical pitfalls proves a
difficult task, but here goes: Punk. Punky ska. With hc happening here and
there. Okay, so I didn't do too well, sorry. But these guys just rock. And,
in my opinion, the tape hardly does them justice. If you get a chance to see
them live, you won't regret it. In fact, your feet and your ears will thank
you! The first song, "Seven," is a keen punk tune with the occasional guitar
beat, and a cool-ass sing-along chorus. Then, of course, there's my favorite
song on the tape, "Time-Out," which, basically, just rocks. If you'd like to
learn more about Animal Chin, don't visit your local library. You can email
them via their bassist, Andrew Gruhn at <agr...@macalstr.edu>, or write to the
address below. Thanks for making a great show even better, guys.

THE FIERCE NIPPLES - "Cripes!" CD [CRST-05]
Somewhat funkified bass, driving beats, bite-ass guitar rhythms, and
humorous (sometimes disturbingly so) lyrics congeal into what are known as The
Fierce Nipples. In a Fugazi-vein, is where these guys flow. That's not a bad
thing, mind you. It's not a rip or anything, but, it's quite obvious Ian and
company are a major influence. The odd, melodic guitar harmonics inject the
listener with a dose of a kind of ordered Sonic Youth sound, without the
artsy-fartsy stuff. But the one thing that stood out for me the most, were
the drums. John makes use of everything in front of him and blends them
together superbly bringing a truly funk-laced feel to the whole album. And I
won't even talk about the bass. To save time and finger-work, lemme just say
that it kicks. Personally, I feel the vocals could use a little more work.
Picks for me include "Hot Pipes" and "Kick, The Concrete Cat." I'm still
trying to figure out what could have been the inspiration for "Kick." All in
all, not a bad album. I should mention that this is their 2nd full length,
with their first selling over a thousand undistro'ed copies. Pretty damned
impressive, if you ask me.

FIVE KNUCKLE SHUFFLE - #4 Zine $1.00 ppd.
Just from the cover, I could tell that this wasn't gonna be your everyday
I-think-I'm-cool-so-I'm-gonna-do-a-zine type of thing, like mine list is! :)
The cover picture of the sXe kid drinking Budweiser isn't just a pun, but more
of a beacon pointing out the hypocrasy in today's very popular, thanks to Time
magazine and Earth Crisis, straightedge movement. Or, maybe I'm just reading
too much into it. But, enough soapboxing outta my ass, on with the review!
Right under "Five Knuckle Shuffle" it reads "It's not just a fanzine, it's a
way of life." Okay, I agree. A nicely layed out zine, over all. Awesome
cartoons like, "Dress Your Own Frat Boy Paper Doll" and "How To Do Dick's Punk
Polka". Quick question: Do Delta sXe'ers really chug Snapple? There's also
a cool interview with FYP, and an exclusive with Jesus himself since his
resurrection and recent high school career. No kidding! And, to top it off,
a list of "60 Lessons Learned The Hard Way." I couldn't stop laughing, it is
so hilarious! The list is littered with colorful little wisdoms like, "Never
cheat at cards in jail." Or, "Never say, 'Oh, yeah? And what the fuck are you
gonna do with that nightstick, officer?'" I like Five Knuckle Shuffle. And
the zine is good, too.

MU330 - "Now" / "Jason" 7" [MR096]
You're either a fan or you aren't. As far as I go, I'm a fanboy, and have
been so for quite some time, so, when you see friends of yours become more and
more popular, only one emotion enters your head. Complete and total envy!
But it doesn't come unchallenged, for me. These guys know what's up. And
having a release on Moon Records is probably one of the most prestigious things
you could accomplish as one of today's many ska-influenced bands. I wonder
how long it will be until they have a video on Mtv or guest star on 120
minutes opposite Matt "Plinky" Pinfield, because I, for one, cannot wait!
This is part of Moon's limited edition 7" series. No, they haven't been
signed to Moon, it's just a one-shot deal. The new album is slated for a
September release on Asian Man Records. And, the re-release of Press, which
will have 2 bonus songs, will come about on April 4th and will be available
on vinyl as well as CD. If you enjoyed "Chumps On Parade," go get this 7"
right away. You couldn't spend 3 dollars any other way! And if you have a
turntable, that's even better! The show, friday, was, in my opinion, one of
their very best, ever. The latest line up changes include the absense of Nick
on trumpet, and the addition of Gerry "Hulk Hogan" Lundquist of Skankin' Pickle
fame, on secondary trombone. The two 'bones should come out super-fine against
the rest of the band. Although, the trumpet, sax, and Jason's ape-shit antics
will be sadly missed. I repeat, go get this, and any other MU330 stuff you can
find!

THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES - "Let's Face It" CD [314 534 472-2]
WEEK #1 - Upon first listening, I wasn't really impressed. People have been
saying that this album is a little more ska-ish than the previous 4. The
general concensus regarding this factor has, for the most part, been good, but
I have to disagree. At least, at the moment. I'm sure when I listen to it a
few more times it'll grow on me like "Question The Answers" did. I, also,
couldn't help but notice that they traded in the plaid and bowties for
pinstripes and neckties. Other than that, not a bad album by any means, but
also, not their best. Recalling how heavy their previous albums were, and
comparing them to "Let's Face It," I can't help but think that those Boston
badboys we all know and love, may be going soft on us. At any rate, for you
long-time fans, it's an interesting deviation from their last effort, and you
should pick it up, because it might provide a pleasant surprise. And if you're
just getting into them, I would suggest an older album, because, in my opinion,
they're just better. But, then again, none of this means anything, cuz I still
can't wait to see them again! What can I say? I just miss the plaid...
WEEK #2 - Because of the amount of people who want to turn hating me into a
religion, and because I listened to the disc a few more times, I am hereby
retracting what I said about the new Bosstones CD. I didn't mean to piss
anyone off, it's just that I didn't think it was as good as their previous
works. And, no, I'm not saying that it's a bad disc and that you shouldn't buy
it, I'm saying it's a pretty good disc and that you should buy it, but just be
warned that it's different, and void of plaid. Okay? Everyone clear on that?
Good. Class dismissed.
WEEK #3 - Number of listens = 45+. Awesome, awesome album. Not as good as
their previous works, but awesome anyway. Weird observation: The whole
drink-drunk attitude seems to have made a turn for the worst. In the past,
it was "Barenter's Song", "I'll Drink To That", "The Cave", basically, the
let's-go-get-ripped-and-have-a-jolly-old-time mentality. On this new album,
"Another Drinking Song" (which I couldn't stand at first, and is now one of
my favorites) seems to have the I-have-to-drink-now-so-why-not-turn-it-into-
a-career kinda 'tude going for it. It's still an awesome song! Have I said
"awesome" enough?
