ST. LOUIS SHOW LISTING
AND SOME OTHER HOOPLA-POOP

SIX IS WHERE WE BE
___________

Well, here I am. Sitting in my hovel, paging through the new RFT and
sampling the Point's wide variety of popular alternative music. Okay, I'll
dispense with the bullshit. That line about the Point could, quite possibly,
be setting the wrong mood. My present state of mind is similar to that of an
ovulating jackal. I can, and will for your reading pleasure, trace this
moodiness back to the three key elements which I have been brooding over this
fine eve. A kind of karmic salad fork, if you will. Having made the previous
reference to silverware, it is now time to begin.
My first, and most painful dilemma at this crucial position in my life, is
the lack of caffeinated beverages in my presence. There is absolutely nothing
in the house that I can drink to give me that super-duper uber-energy that mere
mortals cannot metabolize without the aid of either soda-pop, or a female
companion. In other words, I need some coffee, or Coke, or peen shrinking
Mountain Dew, and I need it before the black overlord of the known universe
manifests itself through me. Yeah, I know it seems like a situation of minute
importance, but, when you hear the other two, you'll understand.
My next conundrum that I am facilitating (ooo, big words!), is that there's
this guy, ney, this dipshit, who thinks that I have been called into existence
just to make his life hell. And, it's because of that, he sees fit to spew
profanities and death threats at your humble narrator, every hour, on the hour.
No joke, you could set your watch by this guy. When Home Improvements' over,
go harass Beaux. Then, when Dukes Of Hazzard comes on, go harass Beaux again.
And, the worst part, is that what he's lurching all over me doesn't even fit
together in a coherent statement. The only sentence I could actually decode
was about me being a loser. Yes, and? I know this. You know this. He knows
this. Does this hinder him in stating the very very obvious? Hell naw! I
also find it ironic, that this is coming from a less-than-there, illiterate,
ex-con who possesses zero social interaction skills, and has the charm and
charisma of a hyena on heavy-weight blotter. I guess it wouldn't be as bad if
it were coming from some dashing stranger with an IQ that isn't that of
plankton, like John Tesh. Moving on...
Last, and certainly least, I have big problems with, you guessed it...
Satan's radio station: KPNT 105.7 "The Point." "But, Beaux," you say, "why on
earth would you have a problem with such a crappy, mainstream alternative,
resposible for playing mediocre music in a mediocre time, fire it's really
talented DJ's because they outshine Alex Luke, trash radio station?" Well,
since you asked, I'll tell you, but for this, I will need to switch to the much
fabled list format:
#1- Their idea of heavy-rotation obviously means picking eight not-so-great
singles and replaying them ad nauseum. A good thing?
#2- The Point-Fest Concert series. Do we really need to see the end of the
world to know it's coming? And, what's more, do we really need to pay
for it? Not following me? They made the Descendents play on the second
stage, opposite Primitive Radio Gods. Now, tell me armageddon isn't
upon us.
#3- Alex Luke- That guy just pisses me off.
#4- Alex Luke- That guy really pisses me off.
#5- Bush. No explanation, just Bush. Okay, I'll give you an explanation,
not like you need one, right? This has to be a first in the history of
commercial radio. Not one, but two whole, entire albums have been okayed
for airplay. Not just a song, or four. The whole god-forsaken album.
What's in heavy rotation? Why, the Bush albums, again. They also let
you know that their record company is paying out the ass to expose
America's impressionable youth to sheer, unadulterated, shite!
This isn't even the tip of the ICEBERG, (yes, a homage), but rather just a
scratch in the glossy paint of trash radio.
I know I'm just ranting. There are ridiculously simple solutions to these,
my current crop of problems. I could go to the gas station and bone up. I
could just kill the guy, or kick him some science and watch his head explode.
And I could, quite effortlessly, turn off the radio, (or switch over to KDHX
-shameless plug time.) but, what would I attempt to entertain you with?
Trivial problems? Yes. Stupid one-liners? You bet. Just a distraction
from the rest of the list? Without a doubt. So, go read the rest of the list.

Just the opinions of a guy without some joe...

ARE YOU IN A BAND? ARE YOU? REALLY? WELL, READ THIS!
___________

If you're in a band, and would like to play in St. Louis, as of right now
you have three options. You can call each of the clubs and pool the info they
give you and book your own show. You can let me know what's up, and I can
screw it up royally because I'm not too keen on that type 'o thing. Or, and
this would be your best bet, you can leave a message for Nicole Lapusan at the
Hi-Pointe, and she can hook you up. She also hosts Ska's The Limit, friday
nights at 8pm on KDHX 88.1, and she's hello-cool, so give her a try.

_________________________________________________________________

YADDA YADDA YADDA, YOU KNOW THE DEAL
___________

If you know of any good shows coming to town, keep me informed. This list
will be updated, mailed, and sent to newsgroups every week. That's right,
every week. If you don't get it on a thursday or a friday, then it means I'm
really busy. In other words, just hang loose, blood. It's on it's way!
If you'd like to have this list mailed directly to you, send me a message
telling me about how keen it would be, and I'll slap your address on the list,
cool? I'll be posting this on Usenet for the next couple of months or so, but,
ultimately, I'd like it to be strictly an email newsletter/zine type of
periodical-thing.
Also, if you have anything you'd like to contribute, (HINT!) send it to me!
I'll include it with the next mailing if A.) I'm not too damned busy, and B.)
it's within the boundaries of good taste. So, seeing as how I'll be setting
the boundaries, next to everything will be accepted. Unfortunately, I can't
pay you in any way, other than giving you due credit, and praising your good
name. Maybe I'll buy you a beer at the next show, eh?
Have any comments, gripes, or suggestions? Beaux's my name, feel free to
wear it out. My address is <bhe...@accessus.net> so, send away!
And don't forget: This is your scene, support it and enjoy it, or stay at
home and masturbate. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

SHOWTIME, FOLKS
___________

Shows are all-ages, unless noted. i.e. (19+) = 19 and over, dig? This is to
the best of my knowledge. The best way to be sure would be to call the club.

"???" = the info is either unconfirmed, or tentative at the time of mailing.

The word in brackets after the band listing is my attempt at categorizing the
genre of the bands playing. Same thing with the local band listing after the
shows. If there are no brackets after a band and you can sum them up in a word
or two, tell me and I'll update the info. Please keep in mind that the
category has absolutely nothing to do with the ideals of the band's members or
their record company and has everything to do with their sound. Got it, pal-o?

Also note that a few of the clubs have been imposing an extra $2.00 door charge
on everyone under 21.

And, finally, after the show listing, there is a club listing with all the
pertinent info I can scrounge on them. (Address, phone, yadda yadda yadda.) If
you would like instructions on how to get to a particular club, let me know,
and I'll send it to you as soon as I can, aw-ight?

radio station operating on the campus of the University of Missouri - Rolla
(about 2 hours west of St. Louis on Hwy 44). We've got 450 watts and reach
around 35,000 people.
Music wise, we play everything. Of course, naturally, a lot of mainstream
commercial alternative and classic rock stuff gets played, but we have a lot
more than that. Blues, classic jazz & free jazz, reggae, R&B, live hip-hop
mixes, live ambient/trance mixes, live jungle/drum & bass (NOT mixes... he
actually brings in his keyboards, drum machines, and other garb.), older skate
punk, new punk/hardcore/emo, 'indie rock' (if you can call that a music type),
and just about anything else you can think of. We also do the Grateful Dead
and Maximum RocknRoll Radio Hours and a great lo-fi Rockabilly Hour that some
guy in Nashville sends to us... it rocks!
Check out our web page at http://www.umr.edu/~kmnr (Still needs lotsa
work.) A new club called The Open Hand just opened up down here not too long
ago and I've been working with the owners booking bands and such. If you want
to play here, call Robert Morrissey at 573.341.2787 or call me, Mike Pauli, at
KMNR at 573.341.4273 and we'll set up something. We also do live interviews
and on-air sets if you so desire.
If you want to know anything else about KMNR, please get ahold of me!
Thanks!

DEPARTMENT OF HORKED STUFF
___________

-This piece was horked from The Riverfront Times #948 Dec 4-10th 1996. Sure, -
-it's kinda lame in that the writer just barely knows what he's talking about,-
-but it's an update as to how and what The Skalars are doing as of late. -

R O A D S K A L A R S -Richard Byrne

It's hard to call Isaac Green and the Skalars a local band, even though
they're based right here in St. Louis.
The problem with the "local" tag is that the skalars are out of town almost
all the time now, touring behind their debut CD on Moon Records, Skoolin' With
The Skalars.
"We just got back from doing the last bit of the Toasters tour," says
Green. "It was great. We got to play in front of some hug audiences. There
were a thousand people out to see the Toasters."
The Skalars have come a long way in a little more than two years, peddling
a highly appealing brand of old-school ska and rock steady that pays homage to
greats like the Skatalites, and Duke Reid without aping them. The band's
"skalarship" in the roots of the genre was evident from the start, but the
studious bent never overwhelmed the band's youthful take on a much imitated
sound.
This writer, for one, has been a fan since the Skalars' inception. Modern
ska, while keeping the raw energy that one finds in those early recordings, has
in many cases replaced musicianship with sheer speed.
Skoolin' With The Skalars is proof positive that the approach that Green
has taken can pay off. The 12 tunes on Skoolin' keep the pace fresh and
varied, alternating between straight-up ska and a more relaxed rock steady
groove that should grab even the most casual listener.
"A lot of rock-steady tunes go over real well live," Green notes, pointing
to songs like "Bloodshot Eyes" and "High School."
Something that gives the new Skalars CD an added kick is that the
instrumental tracks were records live by the entire ensemble in the studio,
with vocals added later. The songs hew to what works live, something that
Green is happy about.
"There's a real live energy," Green observes. "It seemed lifeless without
the ensemble playing together."
Green's ensemble, which has weathered a few personnel changes along the
way, has now stabilized. Jessica Butler (Ralph's Daughter), Michelle Rae and
Amy Shear (who's since departed to play with hot scenester band Invincible
Groov) handle the saxophones and vocals on Skoolin', with Evan Shaw adding
trombone and vocals to the mix. Jason Brody's guitar and Ethan D'Ercole's
organ provide a chunkily apt accompaniment to the rhythm section of Willie
Horton (bass) and Dave Sharma (drums).
Surprisingly, Green has found that the old-school approach hasn't hurt the
band one bit among ska fans. In fact, when the Skalars play on punk bills (as
they are wont to do), they're finding fans there as well.
"They tell us that they don't like ska," says Green of the punkers. "But
they say they like us. We put on a frenetic live show."
