Well, here's some interesting evidence/info: I saw Winona at the Golden
Smog show a few months back, and she was dressed very normally. A plain
white top and pants. She also had an odd strawberry-blonde dye job. Very
beautiful, but that's just because she's Winona. She was definitely
dressed down. BUT...at Westerberg at the El Rey, she was dressed to the
nines. Full makeup, tight black lacy semi-seethrough top, black
slacks...she was sssssssmokin'! Perhaps she was hoping to impress Mr.
Westy?

Why am I always sworn to silence on answers to the juicy questions?
Duck aka Doug (inside joke)
P.S. Didjall miss me?
YAY!! You're back!! You've been sorely missed, I assure you!
Anyway, one could say that since you have sworn to silence, then the
only answer to the juicy question would be the most obviously juicy
answer.
I could be wrong of course. :)
Welcome back.

I remember reading about Winona following the 'Mats around on the
"Don't Tell a Soul" tour because she was in deep l.u.v. with PW.
Made it even more amusing to see her hook up with Pirner a few years
later.
But, let me tell ya, this girl must have a serious jones for
all-American pop-rock singer-songwriters; a friend of mine spotted her
backstage at a Posies show at Tramps in NYC and said she was all over
poor Kenny Stringfelllow...
Of course, I can not confirm any of this. Just thought it was a cool
thread....
Sal C.
P.S. - By the way, one of Winona's first starring roles ("Heathers")
had her character attending 'Westerberg High' and muttering the phrase
"color me impressed". Coincidence? I think not!
If Winona was/is jonesin' for pop writers/singers, then whats is the
deal with her short dating of David Docoveny (A.K.A Fox Mulder)?

Indeed not. Naming the school Westerburg (sic) High was apparently her idea.
Does anyone know if the ''Heathers'' screenwriter is also a fan? If I
remember correctly, ''Heathers'' was the writier's first Hollywood effort. The next
time I saw the name, it was associated with Tim Burton's name -- definitely a leap into
the big leagues. Since Burton's another longtime fan too, I began to wonder if there
might be some sort of Hollywood industry-fan underground with a secret Westerberg fan
handshake or somethin'.
Duck
Gee, could Winona be drawn to sarcastic, wry, word freaks? Duchovny, once an Ivy League
grad student in English lit, may not write songs, but I'm sure he can deconstruct them.

Could be! Several of the LA show reports listed stars spotted in the audience
- Wasn't Judd Nelson or Charlie Sheen or one of those post-brat-pack guys
mentioned? (I can't keep them all straight - I think they're all just the same
guy)
Hey Duck,
I'm pretty sure that the idea was Cameron Crowe's. He's a Mats nut, and
I think I have heard it was his idea. I'm sure Charles would know.
Also, if you need further support, there's a scene in "Singles" (Crowe
wrote and directed this) of that one guy messing around with his record
collection while talking to Kyra Sedgewick, and he pulls out "Tim."
JD
Hi John! Good to see you in the group.
Crowe was indeed a Mats nut--I'm not sure how working with Westerberg on the score to
''Singles'' affected his enthusiasm--but this is the first I've heard that he might have
had input in ''Heathers.'' As far as I know, he had nothing to do with the film at all.
Did I miss something?
Duck
I don't know if its totally clear who's idea it was..(Was Cameron Crowe
involved with Heathers?) Shortly after the release of Heather's
Winona Ryder went through a period of raving about the Mats in every
single interview she did. So the popular assumption was that Winona
wanted the Mats references in the movie.
Charles
Hmm. We may have a bit of trivia to clear up here. John and I have established that
Crowe has no apparent association with the film ''Heathers,'' so this leaves the matter
of whose idea the name WesterbUrg High was.
I'd originally read that the rookie screenwriter was a big Mats fan and ASSUMED (always
a dangerous thing) that it was his idea. Then I HEARD (believing what I hear--another
big mistake) that Winona was taking credit for the name.
I did note that the rookie screenwriter got the assignment to write the second Batman
movie--not a bad second or so gig. Then there's the fact that Tim Burton is a well
known Mats fan. Mysteries, mysteries...
Anyone have any FACTS on the naming of Westerburg High?

Not only does "Tim" make a cameo, but I believe Paul W. does too. There's
a scene when some people are watching a band play in some bar, and lurking
in the audience behind Cambell Scott or whoever it is, there is Paul,
looking like a regular guy watching a band...but we know better...
Does anyone else remember this? Am I making it up? Confirmation would
be appreciated so that I don't convince myself I'm going crazy...

You want facts? Oh, I think all this speculation and theorizing is much
more fun! It allows us to use our imagination...
:-)
Possible, of course, but I've sure never heard anything about Paul doing a cameo. Since
so much of this footage was in the can WELL before--like a couple of years before--Paul
was brought in to do the soundtrack work, it seems highly unlikely that he'd have been
asked to do a cameo.
I doubt that you're crazy though. Didn't Paul used to say he just blended into crowds?
Duck
I know the scene you're talking about. While the guy does bear a
passing
resemblance to Paul, it's not him. It does look like someone who wishes
he were him, however...
Oh, and by the way, Kyra Sedgewick pulls out Let It Be, not Tim.
Shannon
(who's apparently seen Singles waaayy too many times..)
JD
It's nice to know that I'm not crazy (or at least that a guy called Duck
doubts that I'm crazy), but now that my memory has been contradicted by
two people, I think I'll be stubborn and go rent the thing just to make
sure. I certainly could be wrong about this (in fact I probably am), but
I have distinct memories of both seeing Paul iin the background and also
reading somewhere before I saw the movie that he was in the scene. Maybe
the journalist had it wrong, and under his or her influence I assumed that
the scruffy-looking bar-goer in the background was Paul without doing a
double-take to make sure. If I do spend the buck and a half to rent it,
I'll get back to you, most likely to confirm your belief that it's *not*
PW...
Re the question of Tim vs. Let It Be, I remember the scene vaguely, but
don't have a picture of which record was pulled out...I just went along
with JD who said that it was Tim...again, if I do rent it I'll clear up
that question too.
Why do we spend our time on such trivia? I wonder this about myself often...
BTW Shannon how many times *have* you seen Single? Just wondering... :-)
> BTW Shannon how many times *have* you seen Single? Just wondering... :-)
Twice in the theater, and then I went and bought the thing. :) I love
this movie.

Duck is a woman.
ACtually isn't a male duck called a drake?

Well, Duck, Paul won't be able to get John Houston to direct this one.

Yeah, but you guys got it all wrong. It's not Duck, it's Doug. ;)
Also, I am 100% sure that the record pulled out in "Singles" is Let It Be.
I'd recognize those shingles anywhere. Also, as I found out from this
newsgroup, when Bridget Fonda's character is in the doctor's office, you
can hear a muzak version of "Bastards" ever so softly in the background.
I want to rent this movie again just to catch this part, which I missed
the first (two?) times I saw it.
