Apparently it's some sort of wrist brace. From what I hear, nothing's wrong
with his wrist: it's more of a protective measure (rumor has it that while
exploring the sonic realm the way he does, he's torn up his wrist when it's
accidentally come in contact with the strings). And once more, having the same
equipment as an awesome guitarist doesn't make you an awesome guitarist. Being
left-handed and playing a right-handed guitar doesn't make you as good as
Hendrix, having a cherry-red Strat won't make you play like David Gilmour, and
wearing a wrist brace certainly won't make you Jonny Greenwood (unless you're
just going for image!). :)

it's a wrist support, it keeps his arm rigid for the the extremely fast
strumming of songs like creep and paranoid android were he plays so fast
he'd probably tear his arm on the bridge, tele's have fucking sharp casings,
i have the scars to prove it from when i've been playing the songs mentioned
above, brilliant stuff.

That thing on Jonnys arm is a brace. It is there to prevent him damaging
his bones in the strumming arm cause he plays the thing so fast...

If you want one just use tremolo strumming on tracks like just , paranoid
android solo , creep .etc over a period of 5/6 years.

Check out the second chorus of creep live at the astoria. Look how fast the
arm moves.
Seeing as you are from Ireland , if you saw the Galway concert in '96 you
may have seen that he was wearing an effectg "glove" of some sort. Get that
! if you can and listen to the opening af Anyone Can Play Guitar. That ! is
abusive guitar playing !!!!!!

it might support your wrist and prevent RSI;-) I can think of a few other uses
for a wrist support to prevent repetative strain injuries...hehe.

I read in an interview that it is indeed a brace to ward off carpal
tunnel syndrome, another term for repetitive strain injury. Hope it
works and the youngest member of the band is playing for many more
years!

Yeah

I've been thinking that for ages.....

why do people chase after VOX AC30's........

all the ones I've heard sounded horrible......

and the reason they want one?: "The Beatles/Hendrix/My Best Mate from down
the pub" used them........

Really........

that said.....

I'd did go out and buy an ESP-KH2.....

But at least that does make me sound like Kirk Hammett (In tone at least)

at it's a damn nice guitar....... and I'm rambling... =)

I think that thing is that Jonny has tennis elbow. This is a fluid build up
in the elbow. I am a tennis player and my mates wear the same thing. After
all how manic is he on the guitar?

Lets not get tennis raquets mixed up with guitars now. After all tennis raquets
have only one string (Sometimes two).
I read that the brace is because of his aggresive playing technique (Guitar,
not tennis).

Bye.

Well I'm not any tennis expert but I thought those white arm band thingies
were what Jonny used to play certain guitar parts with. I read somewhere
that he uses all weird kinda shit to play the guitar with, thats why he's
so damn talented and good and kicks ass....etc.
It might actually be easier to play the guitar really fast with the
positions theyre placed if you think about it, trying to hold a plec at
that speed might be a bit awlkward. Anyway I'm full of shit, but I've
always wanted to know the answer too.

At the very least, the wrist support thing probably prevents wrist cramping. As
you said, holding a plectrum (or "pick", if you prefer the more common term)
and playing at the speed Jonny plays at sometimes is very difficult. It
requires getting the wrist straight and holding it that way in addition to a
good grip. And from a few hours of experimentation this afternoon, I've
determined that such can DEFINITELY lead to cramping. So think...if you had
something else which would hold your wrist in place apart from muscular action,
wouldn't that prevent (or at least reduce) wrist cramps?

I understand it's mainly to save him from shredding his arm to bits,
but I suspect the comment someone else made about cramping also holds
true.

answer: a brace to protect his arm. he has a repetative strain injury due to
the excessive force with which he plays.

This is taken from the April 1998 edition of Guitar World magazine:
"It was also during this time (1995) that Jonny's aggressive,
arm-snapping playing style began giving him serious pain. A doctor
diagnosed repetitive stress injury and advised Jonny to wear a brace on
his right arm, which has since become something of a trademark. 'I enjoy
putting it on before I play,' he confesses. 'It's like taping up your
fingers before a boxing match'".
The rest of us mere mortals might only need to guard against right
arm repetive stress injury for something entirely different than playing
guitar!
