Oh, fuck off already! So someone ripped on your beloved band; get over
it. "The most attractive quality in a person is humility." In regards
to showmanship, image, message, et cetera, Radiohead are lacking in too
many in departments to be the "Best Band in the World" these days. But
they're up there.

a) Theoretically, you should be calling her a Stupid Scottish mutt bitch.
b) I don't think she's so much jealous as just another fan who wanted Kid A
to be more like OK Computer. I seem to recall reading that Garbage are huge
Radiohead fans.

Radiohead fan . . . that's funny. I read the whole damn thing, sounded to
me like she views Thom Yorke as a condescending asshole. But that's too big
a concept for you to grasp, apparently. You think a band and its music are
two separate entities. Well, they're not. The band's music are their

Never. But Radiohead won't be the best in my mind if they keep pouting

concerts to be dazzled by the band. It's the only kind of performance
art I believe in. And, for me, the music is secondary. It if sounds

Why on earth not? I think it's great followmearound have the balls to
report both points of views. Wouldn't harm us to spend more time
being subjective and less time patting Thom on the back when any other

Just someone with an opinion; one she has a right to. And it's hardy
as if she's taken out adverts in the world press saying "I HATE KID A"
for the world to see. Her online diary which is more likely to be
read by fans of Garbage than fans of Radiohead. She's hardly cramming
her opinion down the throats of people who don't wish to hear it.
I also happen to not only see her point, but also agree to a certain
degree. Thom himself joked the album should be called "Emperors New
Clothes". While opinions on the album are going to be divided the
press seem unable to just come out and say "it's shite" when evidently
they don't know what to make of it, just because it has "Radiohead"
printed on the cover. I doubt they'd be playing it so safe if it had
been put out by a relatively unknown or unpopular band.

Geez I really hit a chord there didn't I? If I HAVE to listen to people's
thoughts about a band which I like then I would rather hear what the
"average slob" CD purchaser would think about Radiohead's music. I could
care less for a washed up relic singer of a mediocre band from the 90s. One
thing I can't stand are people who have had their 00:15 of fame and now
think that we would be even remotely interested in their opinion!
Now if you like Garbage, and judging by the way to you speak to people, then

Pouting? I don't see it, unless you consider a quiet, brooding song
like Exit Music to be one long pout session.
Also, why does it matter if the band go on stage in T-shirts instead
of tuxedos and glitter pants (or whatever it is you're looking for

"The music is secondary"? Wow. I think if you're going to see
Radiohead live expecting some kind of flashy performance with a lot of
dancing and choreography and onstage banter and neon outfits as opposed
to, y'know, actual *music*, then you're destined to be disappointed in
everything they do. They're not trying to be a Broadway musical,
they're trying to be a *band*.

I dunno ... What with them being so bitter and all, maybe they could
trash the stage once or twice? That would be cool.
Anyway, back in the days of Mozart and Beethoven, music was the primary
source of entertainment during a live concert; this was the case because
fans weren't able to take that music home with them -- they had to hire
the performer. But with the invention of 8 tracks all the way to MP3s,
we're able to now. We're able to have a concert in the comfort of our
own living room. And that's why I see live concerts and performance art
as a dying breed, if and only if music that could be listened to at home
with almost the same pace and structure is the main theme. Put it this
way, we could make like Josh Wink's "Black Bomb" and put a goddamn
stereo onstage if all people go to the shows for is the music.
I think with live entertainment to continue to exist, there needs to be
something more. And I don't know the exact answer, just that bands like
Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, Soul Coughing, Beck and Marilyn Manson
have wowed me live because of their stage routine.
I probably won't be disappointed if and when I see Radiohead live
because I'm sure the energy of the crowd alone will be enough art and
entertainment for me. But they're far from the best band in the world
when considering performance. And that's what frustrates me the most
about trying to see them live: they're demigods in Britain and America.
I'm weird without drugs. You think it's impossible? It's pure talent.

Absolutely. Just because she happens to be famous doesn't mean her
opinion carries any more weight, or less, than anyone else. Everyone
has the right to an opinion and the freedom to express it, regardless
of if you're Thom Yorke, Shirley Manson or Mrs Smith who cleans the
public toilets and thinks Cliff Richard is god! ;-)
Generally, most people agree with that in principal but all too often
apply it as "freedom to agree"; where you can be as outspoken in your
agreement of something but have absolutely no right to express
disagreement. :)
Most newsgroups, including this one, tend to lean heavily towards the
latter. If you join the group and sing Thom's praises and list all
the reasons why Radiohead are the best group in the world you're fine
- dare to be critical and you're a troll, stirring up trouble or just
out and out *wrong*.
I'm one of their biggest fans - I've travelled across Europe to see
them (twice), collected more of their material (along with the
associate credit card bills!) than the band themselves probably even
knows exist and invested countless hours maintaining the FAQ and
participating in this group and others. Doesn't mean I have to be
blind to the fact Thom can sometimes be a bit of an arse and be forced
to like everything they've done or doing.
>Wow, you are like the only person that doesn't freak out around here.
At least, the only person being vocal about not freaking out. :) The
hundreds of lurkers who don't post at all are probably less guilty of
freaking out than anyone. :)
>BTW, you never know who you might be speaking to.
Isn't that the beauty of the whole thing?
For me it doesn't make any difference. If I were to meet anyone here,
or even the great Thomness himself, in the street and, assuming it's
one of the rare occasions he's feeling amenable enough not to just to
tell me to "f*ck off", I'd have no problem saying all the same things.
However, some people need the anonymity to express themselves freely
and this medium provide that; I'm cool with that.

This is a bit too simplistic a statement for my tastes -- a bit too
black-and-white. I don't doubt that there are people out there who find Thom
Yorke a "condescending asshole" but nonetheless respond to his voice, lyrics,
both. It is entirely possible to revere a band but not love every aural
offering at the same level. Specifically in regard to the Shirley Manson --
she said that she missed some of Radiohead's strengths on the new record --
specifically, Thom's voice and their general sense of melody. Fair enough; I
don't think she's alone there. On the other hand, there might be something to
be said for a group willing to take chances and jumble up the formula a bit.
Don't like the new formula? Well, go back and listen to the Bends and OK,
then. Or wait for the next one. Or the one after that. Or find yourself a
new fucking band, for Christ's sake. Just as everybody has the right to
express "disappointment" in Radiohead's new "direction," everybody also has the
right to defend them to core ("they can do no wrong"). The truth, for most,
may be somewhere in between. Listen to what you like; ignore what you don't.
I know that I can't get enough of Everything in Its Right Place, How to
Disappear Completely, and Idioteque -- but that's just me. And that's just
this record. Can't wait for the next one. And the one after that. Etc.
A piece of advice....don't take life or yourself too seriously.
That's not the definition of a troll. He just doesn't care.

Not that it's relevant, but I agree!
I still disagree with her about "Kid A", no matter how much I might like

Simon
wait a minute, boy-o. you're about to piss off another irish bitch.
(manson is irish?) anyway, I don't mind that she felt she couldn't get
into Kid A and misses their strengths. I was more put off by her
linking to the Rolling Stone discussion on how Kid A is a collection of
what wouldn't make "B sides" for someone else, thus showing Rolling
Stone's commercial radio mentality. I don't care if Manson prefers
Radiohead's previous albums. I don't know why she thinks we give a fuck
what she thinks about it though or why it's important for her to tell
us about it. She ought to worry about doing her own music. I agree with
the person who said they'd rather hear from the average joe than some
competing musician. And whether she claims The Bends or OKC are great
or not does not impress me. It just shows me she's limited in how
adaptable she is to someone else's interior growth. It just shows her
to be jealous, and pointing to Rolling Stone for support makes her look
like a back stabbing ass. Yes, Manson has the right to have fave and
non-fave albums, but why she thinks it is of momentous importance to
announce it to us instead of working on her own art, I do not know.

I think that that was quite good. I am replying as a way of showing my
approval. However! What is it about How To disappear completely? It's a
very good song and I agree with the people that like it. But there are 9
other songs as well. Some of them are better than How to disappear
completely aswell. Oh well, it's all down to opinions, but I can't believe
you all think HTDC is the best song. It's not!!! But you can have your
opinion anyway...unless you are Ms Manson in which case you must continue to
talk about how ugly you think you are instead because that is exciting.
That's quite an interesting opinion you have there. However I think the
reason Radiohead aren't doing what you want is because it's not what they
want. There is no point in criticisng them for it either. I suspect most
people go to concerts to see what the band are like and to see the perform
their own music. The fans will probably want the band to be themselves. So
a stunning performance probably won't be on the cards.
Of course, they could take advice from Select and have Jonny be flown above
the stage on wires while doing a sax solo while the other members of the
band to the Madness nutty dance but....perhaps it wouldn't be for the best,
what with all the psychological trauma it would cause and all.

When did she flash anyone??
And for anyone who would say Shirley ISNT good looking, she is. She used
to be a model, before Garbage. I'm not sure if it was before or between
her previous bands.

er, so being a model makes you good looking..to everyone?
hmm...
(i think shirley looks a bit like a massively pale alien thing.)

I think this person was referring mostly to the ITIP video where shirley
flashes her knickers. Also, there's a well-known shot of shirley at the
'96 VH1 Fashion Awards or something where one of her breasts popped out from
her loose shirt during the performance. Also, on the v2.0 tour there were
several reports from the show in Spain that she was extremely drunk and
flashed the audience her breasts. And, in yet another instance, in one of
her tour reports from San Diego, when Garbage had the luxury of opening for
the "multi-talented" Alanis Morrissette, shirley claims to flashing a
car-load of teenage boys from the tour-bus on the freeway who'd apparently
thought that the bus was Alanis'. Thus, the word "rosebud" comes in to play
since Shirley states that now these boys think that Alanis has small nipples
"about the size of rosebuds." And v3.0 ain't even here yet! Citizen
Kane should ever be so lucky! :>

Her being "good-looking" is just a matter of personal preference.
Personally, I'd rather shag Courtney Love, yet some think she's a dawg.
Tell me, those days when Shirley was a model, was that before or after she
couldn't find work as a prostitute? Hey! I'm joking, I'm joking! Jeeves!
Everybody just lighten up a little about this whole Shirley Manson thing!
The only important thing in these forums is that we all support the bands we
have grown to knnow and love, thru thick and thin.
Peace!

In that case, If only I lived in Spain...
I remember those awards.. Actually, it's like, the entire performance,
her shirt is pretty open. I remember watching it and being astonished.
Cool! In that case, I'll post up the infamous "rosebud" shot at the VH1
awards on the alt.music.binaries.garbage ng right away.
Tymon
Tymon you can't kick her ass its the best ass in the world.

You're right! Not that I could ever come close to kicking her arse, not
with her going to those pilates classes and all. ;>

Bad publicity is better than no publicity.
