The b-sides from OKC and Bends eras were all great. Palo Alto does a
wonderful job of summing up the little tech cities that have sprung up
around here so I think it is special.

I had this girlfriend a few years ago that hadn't been introduced to
Radiohead. I made her an 80 minute cd of stuff from Pablo Honey to Kid A.
When I asked her later what song she liked the most, she said Pearly.

Ok, so Paranoid Android and Knives Out are very similar chords wise, but

Actually i retract the second comment, it was out of order. Though I'll
still bag Nirvana if thats ok :).

Fake Plastic is above questioning because it is a piece of musical
perfection. Whereas Paranoid Android is just an interesting piece of music.
Its like comparing Metallica with Bach. One may seem cooler to listen to,
but its obvious which is better music.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of Nirvana.

"Fake Plastic Trees" is a boring, paint-by-numbers pop song with hardly
any dynamic variation apart from the distorted guitar between 2m:37s and
~3m:20s. And it's just the same trite chord progression, only louder!
Where's the "musical perfection" in that?

The lyrics, also, are spectacularly average. What the hell is "perfect"
about an awkward extended metaphor with a predictable change of focus
[from "her" to "me"] at the end?

So, right, in contrast I would argue that "Paranoid Android" is
'obviously' superior to "Fake Plastic Trees". The latter is an
uninteresting pop song, the former a successful pastiche of numerous
styles [one of which being a decending vocal arrangement which pays
overt homage to Bach's chorale work, which makes your Metallica vs. Bach
stance somewhat amusing] without the pomp or pretension of prog. "Fake
Plastic Trees" is tired and showing its age; it's an uninspired effort
from a band clearly yet to reach their creative peak. In the case of
"Paranoid Android", after almost seven years it retains its energy and
relevance as a powerful piece of songwriting.

Here's what "Paranoid Android" has to its credit: clever arrangements,
appropriate use of dissonance to establish a mood of 'paranoia', use of
climax prolongation [from the end of the first 7/8 section through the
following instrumental section], atypical structure, sophisticated use
of harmony [the chorale segment starting at 3m:34s] and excellent
production. These, applied with the consideration and taste evident in
the recording, add up to a song whose central concept ['paranoia',
essentially, reinforced by the aforementioned techniques -- particularly
the use of dissonance and unfamiliar (and stylistically varied --
'bipolar', if you like) structure] works incredibly well. I cannot
fathom why anyone would prefer the relative banality of "Fake Plastic
Trees".

And who thinks Metallica are "cool to listen to", really?

At least you agree with me on Metalica :).

The genius takes complexity and creates simplicity. In the same way the
sophisticated person is not the one who uses long words and spouts
knowledge. The trying to be sophisticated person is the one who does that.
Paranoid Android is aurally inferior to Fake Plastic Trees reguardless of
its length, its key, its time signature, its lyrics, the fact its more
upbeat. There is no need to justify it by breaking it down. One of them as
a whole is genius. One is just a very good song. Take a few listens to
them both without making your mind up before you start.

Proof, please. I think that's a rather dangerous [not to mention
self-serving] definition of "genius".

In any case, "Fake Plastic Trees" does not suggest in any way that it is
pared-down genius. I have explained what I believe are its faults. You
have neglected to address them. Ball's in your court.

> In the same way the sophisticated person is not the one who uses long

Providing knowledge is unsophisticated? Using "long" words is
unsophisticated?

Do you realise how ridiculous this sounds? I share my thoughts and what
I know in order to aid understanding. Isn't that better than posting a
series of unsubstantiated claims, which as far as I can tell is all
you're prepared to post? And what's wrong with using my vocabulary as
best I can to get my point across exactly as I mean it, or to make my
writing more interesting? Would you rather I just use "genius" every
time I want a positive adjective?

You don't seem to understand. If you're going to make these claims, you
have to back them up somehow. Simply saying "I am right and you are
wrong!" isn't going to convince anybody unless you have some sort of
credentials to suggest that your opinions are educated and intelligent.
Do you?

Finally, what reason could you possibly have to believe that my thoughts
on these two songs are somehow based on prejudice? Especially after I
detailed my complaints about "Fake Plastic Trees" and went into depth
about why I think "Paranoid Android" is a superior song? You're the one
avoiding critical thought here, not me.

FFS try *explaining* what I'm missing. I never asked you to pull the

There are regular joes who think that what they know is good enough and

I'm not quite as structurally inclined about the matter as McArthur seems to

simplicity in that song. OTOH the claim that Paranoid Android is merely a
dull song with structure tactics that could be written by just about anyone
given enough time, is one of the most ridiculous claims I've ever heard.

Let me put another comparison, say for example compare Yesterday and Hey Ya.
Listen to both it is obvious Hey Ya is a nice catchy jingle that will be
around for a while then forgotten, whereas Yesterday though i don't
personally think its the beatles best is clearly the better song. Yesterday
involves few instruments and very few changes in the type of music
throughout. Hey Ya on the other hand covers many genres in the one song.
The concept can't be that hard to understand. All you have to do is listen
to the music and you can tell. But if i pulled both apart and went on about
time and changes of key and whatever you could say there was a lot more to
Hey Ya. Personally I think Hey Ya is nothing special, though its nicer than
some of the other garbage. Whereas yesterday is genius. A guy took a
guitar and some lyrics and got it just right. Its the same with Fake
Plastic Trees. Though you see no appeal in the lyrics because you read the
song as lyrics and music. It is the way the two compliment eachother
perfectly to make the final product that makes it brillient.

"Hey Ya!" is harmonically simple and unchallenging [and therefore
largely uninteresting after several listens]. The lyrics are nothing
special, either.

"Yesterday", on the other hand, ... This isn't as simple a song as you
seem to think. Someone else has already explained it better:
http://www.icce.rug.nl/~soundscapes/DATABASES/AWP/y.html

I also remind you that I never claimed that "Paranoid Android" was
notable only for its textural variety. Read over what I wrote again.

Did you completely ignore the post where I explained my reasons for
preferring "Paranoid Android"? One of the points I made was that the
music reflects and intensifies the lyrical theme of paranoia via use of
dissonance and textural diversity. I am far from oblivious to this
technique -- when did I say that lyrics and music should be viewed
separately? In the case of "Fake Plastic Trees", you have some ordinary
lyrics over the top of some ordinary music. Sure, they go together, but
that doesn't make the song brilliant; it just reinforces how goddamn
*ordinary* it is.

me not to post a reply. I really don't mind if you win the arguement,
because Paranoid Android in itself is near my least favourite radiohead
song. If you think it is critically better, thats your opinion, and you

you have a set view of what something is meant to be and you can't change

changing that is not my problem and probably not worth the calories I waste

The difference here is that you can't just dismiss it as 'opinion'. You
have claimed that "Fake Plastic Trees" is empirically superior to
"Paranoid Android". You have not posted one iota of evidence to support
this claim. When I provide a counterargument, supplying some rudimentary
analysis in keeping with accepted musicological practices, you first of
all reject my statements as somehow missing the point [without really
explaining *how* I'm missing the point], then go back to making broad
assertions that you never substantiate. You're obviously forming
conclusions in your mind, so why can't/won't you explain how you arrive
at them? What makes you think that I have a 'set view of what something
is meant to be'? Do you know anything of my tastes other than my
preference for a couple of songs over a couple of others?

You seem to think there's some magical, intangible 'X factor' that makes
"Fake Plastic Trees" a great song. I do not accept that such a thing
exists -- why should I? Where's the evidence? -- and you have done
nothing to sway me. Centuries of theory and research have gone into the
study of musical analysis, and you expect me to cast all I know of it
aside as 'opinion' [for the sake of your convenience!] and accept that
you're right and I simply don't 'get' "Fake Plastic Trees"? Seriously,
you're beginning to sound a bit like a creation scientist.

Do what you should have done already and either retract your statement
that "Fake Plastic Trees" is 'obviously' superior to "Paranoid Android"
[since insisting that it's down to opinion obviously contradicts said
statement and makes you look rather hypocritical], or admit that you
have no evidential basis upon which to support your stance and back
down.

I already said i have no evidence in the break down of them. That was never
an issue. I'm not really a creation scientist. Its just a man of science
is a poor philosopher. If you look at it purely scientifically you'll only
find what you already know and if you progress in knowledge you'll only make
small steps up on top of what you know. Whereas to view things without a
predetermined notion allows you too see them for what they are then link
them back to try to find how they fit with what you already know and hence
alter your view if it was wrong. Theories have exceptions, whereas
experience you can usually rely on. A creation scientist would be more the
person who says this is how the bible says it was 2000 years ago it must be
the same now. Its a myth that its all been found and all been done. They
didn't play jazz in the 16th century. They didn't write huge amounts of
guitar music or at least not for popular consuption in the places where the
great musical scholars were. The reason I was so sure "Fake Plastic Trees"
is better is because i've always felt in the musical scheme of things
"Paranoid Android" is garbage and its something for the simple minded to
glare at and say, hey look genius, then try to justify it. But you might
have good grounds for once so sorry if i misjudged your basis for liking it.
I just thought you seemed a bit rigid and logical and objective rather that
someone who actually liked and enjoyed a piece of music.

you are wrong, and anyway it is utterly obvious due to the obvious
superiority of "in limbo" that it ("in limbo") is superior to "paranoid
android" and "fake plastic trees".
