I always felt that one of the coolest things about Radiohead is that they
don't have real instrumental solos, but they script their great musical talent
into the songs.

For example, the solo in Paranoid Android is so perfect that it doesn't sound
like it could have been improvised, and I'm sure it wasn't. Radiohead doesn't
jam like other bands - if they did it live and extended that solo for another
minute or so it would mess up the song, I think. The only song I've seen them
really jam on is Talk Show Host; the rest of them pretty much follow what's on
the albums, but there's no problem with that, because there's no real space for
jamming. Johnny G never cuts loose and improvises, but we all know that he's
one of the better guitarists out there.

They're _stealth_ guitar solos. They're part of the orchestration.

Ed you're right on track in putting The Tourist #1. It not only
represents their best solo guitar piece, but perhaps one of the better
ones by anyone this decade. Why? Simply put, this solo is where The
Tourist is transformed from a pretty good song to a great song with
deep emotional impact. I'm a little surprised that no one else in this
thread agreed. Of course, like sheep, many seem to jump on
the 'Paranoid Android' bandwagon even though it's guitar solo is more
of a tack-on jam that does nothing to complete the song like the
Tourist's solo does.

Thank you sir, I was hoping someone else shared my love for the tourist
solo! I agree also with your opinion of P.A., it is an overrated solo.

Often due to guitarists' traditional (sadly) view of 'harder is better'. So,
the more difficult the solo is to play, the better. Wierd.

Personally I love BananaCo, the timing and note choice is just inspired...
Although going mental with that wierd wibbley pedal at the end of it is
slightly overused... I also love the end of Pearly* (I think that's the one I'm
talking about), where it goes all oriental. That's very cool.

Pearly does have a great solo now that you mention it. I think it makes
that song(as well as posing the much wondered, but seldom asked: How do
you get your teeth so pearly?)

actually there is a trademark jonny part sitting over the arpeggio that thom and
ed play which is incredible, definitely my favourite guitar piece.

I don't know about 4, there are so many cool guitar parts in their
songs, but the one that sticks out as a "solo," (I guess) is the end
of "blow out." that part gets me so riled up, I can't sit still
listening to it.
