* In the 1980's, Freddie secretly developed a cologne which was actually
produced -- I've heard it described as similar to Drakkar Noir and is only
identified by the letters "FM" on the box.
* Freddie had a relationship with model/singer Samantha Fox. Apparently before
her marriage to boxer Donnie LeLon?
* Queen made a routine of having roast beef sandwiches before every concert.
* Freddie owned an apartment in Central Park NYC directly next to the famous
ice rink.
* On a trip to Africa, Freddie went on a safari in which his caravan was
attacked by a herd of rampaging elephants. Freddie's only defense was throwing
apples at the stampede.
* Freddie loved fencing and once refused to wear the face protection while
sparring. This resulted in a permanent scar on his cheek.
* Freddie had a relationship with Rudolf Nureyev. This story came out after
Freddie's death. Apparently Freddie's publicist denied this, while Nureyev's
people called the rumor "highly plausible." Has anyone heard anything else
about this?
* Freddie was often seen wearing a "Heaven" t-shirt onstage during the early
'80's. Heaven was a club in NYC that Freddie frequented, and one rumor says
that he co-owned the establishment.
* Once while on tour in North America, the band was arrested after a traffic
stop, as the police found marijuana in the vehicle containing the band and
their crew.
* The famous Liza Minelli "We Are The Champions" ending to the Wembley Tribute
concert was not the originally planned ending to the show. Apparently, Roger
Taylor was going to finish the show by singing "A Kind of Magic," but they ran
out of time.
I promise I didn't make any of these up! If I can remember any more
Queen-related stories I've heard, I'll post them. Thanks, Ryan
The Samantha Fox rumor has been around for a while. True or not I
don't know. She did do that little "pure sex pout" (talking about
freddie) on one of the documenteries.
The rest are new to me. Chris
think about this for a second, queen ALWAYS closed with "we are the
champions", WHY would they change for "a kind of magic"?
anyway, you can see the set list handwritten in the "champions of the
world" video, "a kind of magic" is not the last song
>Freddie owned an apartment in Central Park
>NYC directly next to the famous ice rink.
Back in around '85-'86, I saw a guy who looked just like Freddie Mercury
sitting on a bench just outside the park area that is next to the rink.
He was smoking a cigarette, and he gave me a stare with a slight smirk
which made me uncomfortable(Freddie supposedly was an "anything and
everything" type of guy, so that made me uneasy being a straight 15 ear
old at the time ). Anyway, because of that eerie feeling I got, I didn't
look at him too closely. I walked about another 50 feet and turned
around and he was still staring.....crazy huh? Looking back, I always
wondered if it was Freddie? I always just figured Freddie lived in
England, so it probably wasn't him, but hearing this rumour makes me
wonder even more. Now I am curious. Did he have an apartment there? I
really don't regret not trying to talk to him, I don't think I would
have had much to say. OTOH, if it were Brian, it would be another story.

Anyway, Freddie did have a NY apartment, but spent very little time there,
usually rented it out to friends.
I made it clear that these are just rumors, and was hoping to hear if anyone
else had heard them. And nothing that has been said would discredit Freddie.
Ryan
I haven't heard of any of these stories. They seem more of a joke, a wierd
"fairy tale" or some kind of "homegrown" philosophy.
I believe You that You want to check wether these stories are true.
But don't forget, that, in criminal law (libel), it's only important that one
spreaded the rumour. Even if he says "it's only a rumour" the penalty is the
same.
You're doing something illegal in any way. I just wanted to explain the
principle.

Apparently you misunderstood my post. I wasn't sure it even was Freddie,
in fact I think I mentioned that I DOUBTED it was Freddie because I
thought he lived in England?
But anyway, whoever it was, this guy was staring and giving me the
*eyes* and I
was only 15 years old and it was New York City! If anything, I looked
young for my age, so that was even more fucked up of him! Maybe you are
not aware of all the crimes
commited in Central Park?
but you'd feel at ease if it were Brian?
Uh....yeah. I relate to, and like Brian's music more than Fred's.......
Understand??
>Gay folks aren't out to convert the world,
>y'know.
Again, you misunderstood my post, your way off.
Matt
This guy was *very* close to Freddie. I wonder it if was some one who
knew he had an apartment in the area, and was trying to impersonate him?
That thought occured to me last night...
Matt
>I'm sorry but I just don't believe this guy saw

>autograph and talk with him.I'm definetly sure
>he would have had to have bodyguard's all

>unbelievable that he saw Freddie.Sorry, dude it
>wasn't Freddie!
Deep inside, I don't think it was Freddie either, but like I said, the
guy looked just like him, and I was surprised to find out that he did
have an apartment right in that area. Rav4 also pointed out the security
thing to me in our personal email discussion, and I agree he probably
would have had at least a bodygaurd. I also have seen Yoko Ono in the
park(same area), and she had at least three security guards with her.
When I went to approach, one of her security guards instantly directed
me away. I couldn't even get close(not that I really wanted to). Some
celebrities sneak around alone though. I was on the subway once with
"Lou-Bud-Mellman" who is on lots of TV commercials, and was on "Late
Nite with Dave Letterman" a lot. He was wearing sunglasses, and was
friendly. My ex worked a block away from where JFK Jr. lived, and she
saw him alone. She also saw Robert Deniro alone, who also has an
apartment by her job. When I saw John Paul Jones(from Led Zep) at Irving
Plaza last October, he got out of a yellow taxi, and wasn't protected by
anybody. There was a small guy with him(hardly a bodyguard), but he took
time to sign autographs and BS a bit.
Matt
P.S. Did you send Joe back his stuff Jason? What about Ricky? Did you
send him what you promised him? I noticed your still avoiding answering
any post people put up about you being a thief........
>You people shouldn't believe all of this crap.
Believe what crap? Did I miss a post?
>People just make this stuff up to give poor
>freddie a bad name.
Nothing bad was said about Freddie, other than maybe the band being
found with possession of marijuana.
Matt
As I gave some examples in another post, there are quite a few other
people who do sneak around alone. Also, those people I mentioned are
"more" famous than Freddie here. The only way anyone would recognize him
would be if they were a Queen fan(which there aren't too many here, if
any?), or they just happened to catch Queen on Live Aid.
>But did he open his mouth?
No, but there was the mustache, and it definitely hinted at over-bite.

Matt
Nah, I've never been that lucky! Chris definitely seems approachable. He
seems very down to Earth as well. I could see myself having a good laugh
with him. Although I could see myself reaching if I ran into Rich
instead. Rich seems a bit on the cold side, or at least on the quiet
side?
Matt
BTW: Did you ever get that email I sent you about that show I was at
with Pagey?
> BTW -you're lucky to have even seen anyone that looks like freddie.
I've

Oh, I have! About three years ago at a carnival in central PA, the
chap that ran the ferris wheel looked JUST like Freddie did around the
time "The Works" was released, AND he even wore star-shaped sunglasses
like Freddie did in the "We Will Rock You" video. I walked up to him
and said "Damnshazaam, you look just like Freddie Mercury." and he
answered (in a non-British accent) "Heh heh heh. Yeah, I get that all
the time." It was neat, especially considering where the carnival was
being held; most people have only heard of Alan Jackson and Garth
Brooks; I was VERY surprised someone else had heard of him there.

Hello, and welcome!

I have an interview where he made a statement something like that. When
asked about his preference, and sexuality, he said "anything and
everything". He also said he "has a very large bed, and it sleeps five."
>Don't you think that if Fred had tried anything

Sure, but I'm not making up what happened. Also, when someone makes
statements like the one he made above, nothing would surprise me, and
that is whether Freddie was kidding, or not when he said it. It makes
him sound depraved. Also, musicians in general, usually do not fit not
the typical definition of being normal, so....

Very true. I can't remember the exact year either, so who knows? At that
time Queen was totally unknown over here. There was NO info on them
what-so-ever. I had no clue the magic tour was even going on in '86. At
least now there is info available through the internet.

Not true. If someone is dead, as Freddie most certainly is, all bets are off. I
could print a rumor about the time he shagged my poodle and not get in trouble.
At least in America.
I'm sure he had a place in NYC, but certainly not next to the ice rink. Nobody
lives in Central Park, at least since the irish and blacks were thrown out in
the 1860s so the park could be built.
>well, according to Hutton, there was an apartment in nyc. where it

Phoebe talks about this in his book 'Mister Mercury'. Freddie
apparently often visited NY and would stay in hotels up until he
bought his apartment which was on the 43rd floor (!!) of the Sovereign
Building on East 58th Street (wherever that is; Matt would probably
know). There were stunning views out over the city including the
Empire State and Chrysler Buildings and the World Trade Centre, and
seven different bridges were visible from the apartment. They were
able to watch the hundredth anniversary celebrations of Brooklyn
Bridge out of a bedroom window.
Incidentally the paperback version of Phoebe's book should be out 'in
the first part of 2000 in most countries' and will be published by
Omnibus Press.

OK, that would be on the south east side of the park. My encounter,
happened on the south west side, and a few blocks north closer to the
Dakota hotel or Strawberry Fields; so it's probably safe to say that it
wasn't Freddie I saw<phew>!

That really is a great area to get a view from, particularly of the two
buildings you just mentioned. It's located right in the center of the
city.

Geez, and I got to watch it from my friend's roof top....little did I
know Fred was checking it out too!
Thanks for the info Sue!

And wern't Billy and Freddie friends? (The plot thickens) Chris
I believe they were -- Billy Squire opened for Queen circa 1981. And Freddie
and Roger did guest vocals on one of Billy's tracks.

Holy bizarre punctuation and spacing, batman!
Also, Brian played the guitar solo on Billy Squire's (Another) 1984
if I'm not mistaken.
By the way, he did back them here in Canada (Montreal, specifically)
for their HOT SPACE tour (if I remember correctly).
Can you quote the original post in the future so we can understand what you

in many towns it's where the action is : in Sydney, for instance, in the
early 90s they had to stipulate they didnt want gay's to bring their
straight 'girlfriends' (faghags is the expletive term) because that made the
gay party 50% straight. then again other gay bars are totally s+m and i
have no idea about them at all and in fact haven't been to such a place
recently.... diffrent crowd

Except that many folks, including many in the Queen organization, consider
"Mercury and Me" a work of fiction.
*I* didn't say it was fiction, members of the Queen organization have said so.
Want to see the press clippings? Maybe they just said that out of bitterness
or something, but it *was* said.
Phoebe often changes his mind, it seems, in matters Queen-related. A group of
us once entertained him at one of the OIQFC conventions ("free booze? I'm
there!"), and at the time he said that Jim Hutton's book was "bullocks", etc.
Maybe it was just the liquor talking, but that's what was said at the time.
