I hate how, in the notes to Masters of the Universe, Clive Solomon
talks about Pulp as a pop group and their songs as pop songs. It seems
at least a little bit misguided considering the songs on the
compilation; Tunnel, for example, is about as close to pop as zero to
infinity. They are, superficially, a popular music group now, and have
been since Separations (when they began to follow the synth-pop trend).
But the It, Freaks, and Masters-of-the-Universe-era Pulp defied pop
definitions. Not only did they not have a poppy sound, they played
clubs rather than concerts and were on the radio only occasionally if
ever. Whence comes this label? Any ideas?
