CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – New forensic evidence has led a
prosecutor to obtain a capital murder indictment against the man
already charged with abducting and killing a University of
Virginia student. And the prosecutor says she'll seek the death
penalty against Jesse Matthew Jr. in the 2014 death of 18-year-
old Hannah Graham.
Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney Denise Lunsford said
Tuesday that she received "compelling evidence" from the state
crime lab in February, but she declined to elaborate.
Circuit Judge Cheryl Higgins scheduled a hearing for June 25 to
set the date for the trial, which Lunsford says she expects to
last three weeks. Matthew, who's 33, was already being held
without bond on charges of first-degree murder and abduction
with intent to defile.
