[Not quite ready for Reading]

NME.com were backstage at this year's Reading Festival (the very
place where Prodigy played their last UK gig 2 years ago), and they
caught Liam Howlett and Keith Flint taking a look at the bands, such
as Primal Scream.

When asked when fans can expect new Prodigy material, Liam replied :
"It's gonna be next year, for a start. I might try and get a single
out this year, but don't wanna get caught up in the Christmas thing.
But, er, maybe release a single this year and we wanna be back in the
festival scene next year and play it all, you know? Just being here
and seeing it all..."

And when asked if the Prodge will be at Reading next year: "Don't
know about Reading, but yeah... one of the festivals, you know what I
mean?"

[Things saint what they used to be...]

Many of you in the UK may already have seen or heard of tabloid
reports on Liam Howlett going out with Natalie Appleton from UK
pop/dance act All Saints. Are the stories true? Has Liam split with
long-term girlfriend Angela Potter in favour of a pop star?

The story started with The Sun's Bizarre page on Friday :

"Nat's A Double : NEVER one to be outdone by her sister, Natalie
Appleton is dating a Liam - Prodigy star Liam Howlett.

Nat has been on a string of dates with the millionaire to get over
the heartbreak of splitting up with actor Jonny Lee Miller. And
friends reckon it could be serious.

Natalie's sister Nicole is dating Oasis star Liam Gallagher and the
two couples have also been out as a foursome.

One of Nat's friends told me "Natalie's been really down about Jonny
and it's great she has found someone new." "

Prodigy fan Paul Harvey also heard the story being run on BBC Radio 1
on Saturday. While at this point, the idea of Liam being with a pop
star seemed highly unlikely, Sunday saw a visual revelation when UK
tabloid News Of The World published a photograph of Liam and Natalie
out together, accompanied by this story, on Rav's showbiz page. PN
mailing list subscriber Erica sent us a transcription and scan in an
e-mail to PN :

"I guess you may already have this but I spotted it on Sunday whilst
trawling though the tabloid rags, I don't know whether believe it,
but you never know." :

"Here's the first picture of All Saints babe Natalie Appleton and her
new bloke - The Prodigy's Liam Howlett.

My eagle eyed snapper caught the pair enjoying the sunshine on a
stroll in North London.

Shy Liam, the brains behind the The Prodigy, has always shunned
pubicity and let the others in the band enjoy the limelight - until
now. And Natalie told pals "We've been seeing each other but it's
early days. Who knows what's around the corner?

"We're just having a good time and taking things very slowly."

But it's good to see Nat smiling again after her split from actor
Jonny Lee Miller a few months back."

"Cheers Pete, and keep up the good work."

Today, Sun writer Jane Moore added her cynical viewpoint on the
story :

"LIAM HOWLETT is always described as the brains behind successful
band Prodigy.

He is also described as the quiet one who shuns publicity and lets
the rest of the band enjoy the limelight. He has just started dating
Natalie, one of the notorious Appleton sisters.

Oh dear. For a shy boy, something tells me he's picked the wrong
girl."

After all this tabloid gossip, you're probably wondering if the story
is true. Liam's manager Mike Champion tells me that the two do have
"a friendship", and said the stories were mostly true.

[Rock on?]

Mike Champion told PN in a phone-call today, that the proposed DJ set
Liam may play in Bristol, is to take place at new club Rock, sometime
in early October. Although not confirmed just yet, Mike says it is in
the process of being finalised.

[Atomic Kitchen]

PN mailing list subscriber Darksyde says that Maxim's solo album
Hell's Kitchen is already released in Japan! He also says the album
is orderable from :

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp

Here's the provided tracklisting :

1. Hadrian's Wall
2. Killing Culture
3. Carmen Queasy
4. Spectral Wars
5. Hell's Kitchen
6. Schemin'
7. Worldwide Syndicates
8. Soul Seller
9. Universal Scientist
10. My Web
11. Dominant Genes
12. Backward Bullet
13. Hell's Kitchen (vocal version)
14. Prism

Prodigy fan Sean notified the Prodigy newsgroup about Maxim's solo
album Hell's Kitchen being listenable on the net :

"You can listen to 30 second samples of Hell's Kitchen at

http://www.liquidmusicnetwork.com/cgi-bin/search/
search.cgi/@dimplerec?search_type=AlbumItem&album_id=17922

You can buy the tracks in Liquid Audio. Your Real Player will have
to get a small update to be able to play the samples."

Meanwhile, PN mailing list subscriber Paul Yelland notifies PN of
this article on Pitchshifter's website :

http://www.pitchshifter.com/pitchnews/pitchnewshtm.html :

"JIM DOES GUEST STINT ON NEW MAXIM : Jim Davies Pitchshifter's lead
guitarist has recently finished work on a new tune with Maxim (of
Prodigy fame) on solo LP. The tune, called Schemin', features guitar
work by Jim and was produced and beat programmed by Liam Howlett
(Prodigy main man). Schemin' is a slow hip hop tune featuring Jim's
guitar work as the main melody which runs throughout.

In Jim's own words: "It sounds very un-guitar like, in fact Liam said
on the phone recently that he didn't even know I was on it, as he
couldn't hear any guitars!!"

Schemin' is out in September as a single in the UK. Jim is also
featured on two other tracks on the LP, released later this year."

[Bull-split]

PN mailing list subscriber Julie Cohen gives us all another reason to
snigger at piss-poor journalism from the States, courtesy of this
terrible article in Mixer magazine... :

"THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING TECHNO SUPERGROUP : New Prodigy record to
be the last, members already going solo. After the release of the
Prodigy's new Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned, the group will
break up.

According to a band spokesperson, Liam Howlett doesn't think the band
should last another five years, which is the time it takes for them
to put out an album. It may be just as well, as dancer Leeroy
Threadgill (sic), who left the band earlier this year, is working
with dub eccentric Lee "Scratch" Perry on tracks under his
Flightcrank moniker, while Prog (sic) MC Maxim Reality has now
shortened his name to Maxim and will release his solo album, Hell's
Kitchen, this month. Showcasing his own production skills, the album
he says, is "closer to Company Flow" than the breakbeat Prodigy
sound, and features guests like Skunk Anansie."

Perhaps the writer of that rubbish should learn to get names right as
well as realising that Prodigy aren't techno and never have been!
Take the 'split' 'news' with a sack of salt.

[You never know...]

The Prodigy would cite a psychadaelic Beatles track as an important
influence - that's according to Oasis member Noel Gallagher, who's
featured in this week's NME, talking about ten favourite songs.

Of Tomorrow Never Knows (a ground-breaking surreal Beatles track), he
says : "All the cools bands of today, Prodigy, Primal Scream, The
Chemical Brothers and Death In Vegas, would all cite this as where
it's at."

This is all very strange as Liam Howlett has previously denied being
a Beatles fan, when a radio interviewer asked him about the inclusion
of Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) on his DJ mix
for BBC Radio 1.

[Smashing video]

Smack My Bitch Up video director Jonas Akerlund has been making
videos for other bands since his effort for Prodigy in 1997, as you
may well know, but his newest masterpiece, a video for the Smashing
Pumpkins comes close to being in the style of Smack My Bitch Up.

The video features drug-taking and most TV stations refuse to show
it. Sounds familiar to us Prodigy fans!
