No problem, it's great anyway - thank you for going to all the trouble.
I'm almost tempted to ask if a note could be put at the beginning saying
that the 'newbie guide'-type part is at the END, just to ward off those
that would snivel and say they didn't read that bit because the FAQ
was too long for them to bother - you can see it happening, can't you?
There's got to be a limit to the hand-holding, though ...
Anyway, good job.

I. Latest Happenings
A. The end of the Prodigy?
QUOTE 1: "There will be no more Prodigy albums" - Liam Howlett in Select Magazine September 1997.
QUOTE 2: "There will be no more interviews" - Liam Howlett in Select Magazine September 1997.
Liam is fed up with "everyone liking The Prodigy". He has stated many times that he would not want to see Prodigy turn into another 'Oasis'. "Everybody likes Oasis. My dad likes Oasis. I don't want to see Prodigy go that way." - "It's important for people to dislike the Prodigy"
Another reason for Liam not making any more albums is that he was under a lot of pressure to come up with FOTL.
But... An observant web-surfer pointed out the following quote from a very recent interview with Liam, on Addicted To Noise (http://www.addict.com):
"At the moment I don't want to do another album," Howlett said during an exclusive Addicted To Noise interview. "I'm not prepared to put myself through committing to another album. For the moment, this is the last album. It doesn't mean it's the end of the band. It just means for the moment, I'm not thinking that in the next year I'm gonna start a new record. I think that's just something I say just to make myself comfortable," Howlett explained. So saying "this is the last album" is really just a way of removing some fo the stress? Yeah, just have the pressure off myself," Howlett confirmed. "I don't even want to be thinking about that. So if the record companies come to me and say we should start thinking about a new album, I've told them there isn't one. I never allow myself to look ahead more than a year anyway. In the next month what I imagine we'll do is release maybe one, at the most two records off this album and do some interesting mixes, record some new material, put out some new singles. But basically not commit myself to another album. It's such a big step to do another album. Unless I feel all the steps are right, there's no point in doing one."
"The Prodigy will only end, when we stop progressing" - Liam Howlett, 1997.
B. Anything after FOTL?
-Tom Morrello from Rage Against The Machine: The latest Prodigy track One Man Army (a collaboration with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello) can be found on the Spawn sound track album. (See releases or http://www.music.sony.com/Music/ArtistInfo/Spawn). No other members of Rage Against The Machine appear on it.
-Biohazard: A UK rock magazine states that the Prodigy are eager to collaborate with Brooklyn metal band Biohazard, having performed Breathe with them on stage, earlier this year. They have asked Liam to produce their next album.
-KoRn: Another magazine has stated that having met LA metal band KoRn during Lollopalooza, Liam will collaborate with them later in the year.
-Madonna, David Bowie & U2: All of these acts were turned down when they approached Liam for production work.
C. Ultramagnetic MC's - In order to cash-in on the success of The Prodigy tracks Smack My Bitch Up and Diesel Power (both of which utilise the vocals of rapper Kool Keith, the latter track being specially written for FOTL), a record company has released the Ultramagnetic MCs album to the UK for the first time - Critical Breakdown is the album where Liam sampled some vocals for Smack My Bitch Up and Out Of Space.
D. Maxim's solo album - Maxim Reality has finished recording his debut solo album. It is due to be released some time around early 1997. The album is full of "very dark music". Maxim said the project had been 10 years in the making. It also features some of his friends and family. The album has the provisional title of Demons and has only been heard by friends and one music journalist so far.
II. The members
A. Liam Howlett (Keyboard geezer) - Some would say "He IS the Prodigy", but Liam would disagree. Certainly, this guy does write most of the music, and leads the way. But he has stated that the Prodigy would be nothing without the other members.
As a child, Liam began listening to ska and 2-Tone music, before getting into the world of hip-hop, during his teenage years. He was so into hip-hop that he managed to join a local band called 'Cut 2 Kill', but got kicked out later on, after a disasterous record deal and friction with the other members.
After checking out a rave for the first time, Liam started afresh as a rave DJ at The Barn in Braintree. It was there he met Keith and Leeroy, and the rest is history!
Liam used to live in the Essex village of Cressing.
When the Prodigy began to take off, he and his long-term girlfriend Angela lived in the town of Braintree.
Earlier this year, Liam, along with Keith Flint, moved out of their Braintree homes, after being plagued by obsessive fans, into
converted Ł1,000,000 houses, in a rural area just a few miles away from Braintree. Their new homes are to be surrounded by a
six-foot high fence.
B. Kieth Flint (Dancer/Vocalist) - It seems that Keith was destined to be a manic dancer after all, during his childhood he used to dance in his mum's kitchen to Led Zeppelin. During a series of dead-end jobs, long-haired 'hippy' Keith was often seen dancing at local raves during the 'M25' era of dance music. After having a good time with Leeroy, at a set played by a DJ by the name of Liam Howlett, he decides to get together with Liam, Leeroy and Sharky to form a band.
For the most of his career in the Prodigy, Keith has had long dark hair (up until summer of 1995), although nowadays, he is more famous for his double-mohican hair-style which changes colours almost every week. Before this haircut, though, he did have a phase between the main two (summer - end of 95) where he had a simple short dyed punk haircut.
The tattoo on his stomach says "INFLICTED"
C. Maxim Reality (MC/Rapper) - Real name: Keith Palmer, although he is referred to as 'Keeti' by the rest of the band. It is not a good idea to call him by his real name, should you ever meet him!
The only member of the original line-up to come from a place other than Braintree. Maxim was a member of a reggae outfit ("Maxim Reality and Sheik Yan Groove") shortly before he joined The Prodigy, although he had been into numerous scenes in his native town of Peterborough, such as ska/2-Tone and hip-hop/breakdancing.
The last person to join the Prodigy for their first ever gig, the idea to have an MC was Liam's, having seen most rave outfits doing the same. Maxim was assigned to The Prodigy by former manager Ziggy. During their first gig, Liam wasn't entirely happy with the way Maxim rapped - sure, they got a rapterous reception (previous acts at the venue had been bottled off), but Liam asked Maxim to tone down the reggae-style he was used to.
Maxim's current stage image consists of a pair of 'evil' contact-lenses, a metal armour glove, a dressing gown and even a skirt!
He is currently writing a solo album which he hopes to get out before the end of year, and "some how, Leeroy will be on it".
D. Leeroy Thornhill (Tall Dancer) - As a youngster, Leeroy into punk music, thanks to his big sister's fascination with The Buzzcocks, The Clash, etc. He also went through a mod phase.
Electrician/handyman Leeroy spent his spare time at raves in Essex during the early 90s. It was here he met Keith, and the two became known as a little 'double-act', both with unique dancing styles.
He picked up his dancing skills through being a fan of James Brown and similar related acts.
Leeroy, possibly the least known member of the main four, happens to be the most crucial member to the Prodigy's existance, says Liam.
His first ever solo work - the Dreamer EP - was released back in 1996 on limited edition vinyl. The title track has since found its way to the internet, via The Earthbound Network.
He currently sports a chin-stud and is very tall indeed! He is the only member of the band who likes soccer. Although the band are Playstation addicts, Leeroy must certainly be the one with the most well-worn thumbs!
E. Gizz Butt (Live Guitarist) - Real name: Graham Butt. 'Gizz' is taken from the punk character 'Gizzard Puke' from The Kenny Everett Television Show.
The newest recruit to the Prodigy live-show, replacing former live guitarist Jimmy Davies.
Gizz is no stranger to music. Since 1980, he has been in British punk bands such as The Destructers and Wardance.
At the moment, he is currently the frontman/vocalist for his own band, Janus Stark (named after a 1970s cult boys' comic character).
Gizz, still lives in Peterborough, and knew Maxim back in the 80s. The leather jacket he wears on stage is the same one from his early punk days. During the early 90s when Gizz was 'strapped for cash', he became a guitar teacher at Stamford College.
He became enthusiastic about the Prodigy after hearing Jilted on the English Dogs' tour bus, and jumped at the chance to join when he heard from a rock journalist that Liam was auditioning for Jimmy Davies's replacement.
F. Kieron Pepper (Live Drummer) - The newest recruit to the Prodigy live show is drummer Kieron Pepper, from Chelmsford, Essex. He has blond spiky hair (not unlike Liam's!) and has been with the band since December 1997, for the UK shows.
Kieron came from the unsigned British band realtv, which split up in November. realtv (yes, always spelt in lower case!) had been going for three years and had become great mates with bands such as The Wildhearts and 3 Colours Red (a band who have befriended Gizz).
The first band he was in was Garp, which also failed to attain success.
You can see a brief shot of realtv in the video for Anthem by The Wildhearts.
Keiron is currently moonlighting as a guest sampler/programmer for fusion band No Santa, from Dublin. No Santa, including Keiron, recently supported Gizz's Janus Stark on their recent UK 1998 tour.
G. Chaz Stevens - Co-producer of the first two chart singles, recorded in his studios (CWS Studios).
H. Neil McLellan - Started off as a producer for N-Joi. Co-producer for some of the Jilted tracks. Now works with dance band Slacker.
I. 'Ziggy' - Their first ever manager, Ziggy (aka 'Captain Naughty') managed to get them their first gig at the Labyrinth in East London in 1990. The Prodigy decided to leave Ziggy around the time of Charly. He does get a mention in the credits of Charly.
J. Mike Champion - Mike Champion drew his attention to the Prodigy when they were looking for a new manager. Mike, of 'Midi Management' knew the score when it came to managing acts on the then-new acid/rave scene of the late-80's/early-90's. He had already managed top rave act N-Joi, which was founded by his brother.
It is believed that Mike has now gone off to start his own record label now.
K. 'Sharky' - The only female member to have been in the Prodigy live act.
Dancer Sharky knew Keith from the rave circuits, and just enjoyed dancing to her favourite music. This was probably the reason why she left the band early, when they won a record contract with XL.
She has been creditted with mentions in some Experience singles, and the first two albums.
L. Simone Berryman - The female session vocalist for 'Music Reach 1/2/3/4'; 'Rip Up The Sound System' and 'Ruff In The Jungle Bizness'. She was in her early teens when she recorded for the Prodigy.
At the moment, she is helping out with vocal work for a small electronic dance outfit in Essex.
M. Carl Miller - Former Prodigy Road manager Carl Miller was the co-writer for the core of Out Of Space, one of the Prodigy's most famous hits in their Experience days.
N. Lance Riddler - The session guitarist for the Jilted album and the man responsible for the recreation of the intro to Nirvana's "Very Ape" that was used in "Voodoo People." He has never joined the Prodigy on stage for a live show. Lives in Witham, Essex.
He is believed to be in a newly launched band - Genetic Source.
O. Phil Bent - The session flute-player for Voodoo People and 3 Kilos.
P. Jimmy Davies - The old guitarist (Jimmy 'Fingers' Davies, as seen on Electronic Punks video) left after Firestarter hit number one in the UK.
Jimmy is still used by Liam as the Prodigy's studio guitarist. He has now started his own band - Dead Mans Pants. He also does live guitar duties for punk/jungle/rock band PitchShifter.
III. Their music genre?
A. Techno? - Although the Prodigy certainly carry some techno elements in their music, they are not a techno band. Some techno enthusiasts frown upon them.
"We have never been a techno band" - Liam Howlett.
B. Rave? - The Prodigy did start off on the rave scene, and were recognized as 'hardcore' by the scene at that time. However, during 93/94, the rave scene started to decay, by which time, the Prodigy were already diversifying their music. They can no longer be classed a rave act.
C. Electronica? - The 'Electronica' tag was invented by the sensation-hungry American media, after poor sales from usual press favourites R.E.M., U2 and Pearl Jam. So America picked up on the hard-dance craze in Britain/Europe, and gave it it's own stupid tag. The 'Electronica' tag has been seen enveloping commercial acts like Robert Miles and Everything But The Girl, along with credible acts such as The Chemical Brothers, Orbital and Underworld. The ironic thing is that no serious fan of hard-dance music would ever use the dreaded 'Electronica' word.
"'Electronica' was a phrase invented by some a guy in an office. And when we find out who that guy is... ...we're gonna slap him." - Liam Howlett, 1997.
D. Industrial? - A lot of recent well-known Prodigy output has certainly got the elements of the Industrial genre - such as being electronic-beat-driven and an aggressive nature. However, the band certainly don't feel part of being 'industrial' - the same view of Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails (possibly the most famous industrial band in existance) when asked about them.
The band do have a bit of a following from some industrial fans, but their output cannot be classed as industrial.
E. The Conclusion? - It's just too difficult to say exactly what! There's no word to describe what genres they have been through, or even the musical styles they have either created or fused together! A mild fan may say 'hard dance music', but that's just too restrictive really. Let's just say that they started up doing techno/rave anthems with hip-hip drumloops, but progressed from that, so that they now carry elements of ambient, hard-house, hip-hop, industrial, punk, acid-jazz, reggae, electro, gabba, heavy metal/rock, jungle and rap. Liam decision to have guitars in the music back in 1994 may have lost some of his original followers, but only the open-minded fans kept the faith, it also gained the Prodigy a larger alternative/indie following. Stop worrying about whether it's X music or Y music, just listen to it!
"It's just...Prodigy music!" - Liam Howlett, 1996.
IV. Releases
A. What's their first ever single? - The single is the What Evil Lurks E.P. (not Charly as some fools may tell you, that's just their first CHART single!) with four tracks (What Evil Lurks, We're Gonna Rock, Android and the original (slow hip-hop) mix of Everybody In The Place), released only on 12 inch vinyl and there are only 7,000 genunine copies in existence! The value could be anything of up to Ł200 to collectors.
Some fake vinyls of What Evil Lurks have been going around. These usually have the word 'Androids' instead of 'Android' in the tracklisting.
Record Collector magazine has recently re-valued original copies at Ł80.
By the way, just because it's rare, it doesn't mean to say it's good, the What Evil Lurks tracks are pretty low-budget and cheap efforts which sound primitive compared to Liam's current offerings! Android is probably the best track, and has been seen on some CDs (some illegal!).
B. UK singles/albums - All on XL Recordings.

J. Computer/Console games - The Prodigy can be heard in the soundtrack to WipeOut 2097 (the sequel to WipeOut)on the Sony Playstation console, along with many other bands.
WipeOut 2097? What's that? Oh, it's known as WipeOut XL in some countries, such as the USA.
What track is it? The instrumental to Firestarter.
I haven't got a Playstation! How can I hear it? Well you can get it by doing one of the following:
*It's already available as a B-side to all Firestarter CD/Vinyl singles
*The whole soundtrack to WipeOut 2097 is available as an normal audio CD.
*You could download a Playstation emulator on your PC, if you're desparate enough.
See http://www.emudirect.com/ for more info on that.
K. Mythical bootlegs - The following 'albums' do not exist:
The Ultimate Jilted Experience
Experience Revisited
Inflicted
Beware of any website telling you otherwise.
The first two albums were set up by a webmaster of an unofficial Prodigy site in order to look credible. The tracks have been identified as obvious hoaxes by many real Prodigy fans.
The 'Inflicted' album was a hoax set up by Tobi Wood during the 'countdown' to The Fat Of The Land. Tobi was pissed off with having CD bootleg pirates ripping off his site, so he set about forging an album called Inflicted, which featured mostly real existing tracks, except for 'Salvationed Army', 'In The Beginning' and a fake 'Benny Blanco', composed (very well) by Tobi himself. Even the artwork (a briefcase full of drugs syringes) was fake.
V. Lyrics - Here are some corrections for some of the most hideously misquoted lyrics on the web.

VI. Live - Go here - http://www.xl-recordings.com/artists/prodigy/prodlive.htm for up-to-date details of the Prodigy Live schedule.
VII. Prodigy Related Acts
A. Remixers - Profiles of acts that have remixed tracks for The Prodigy's UK singles:
**Chemical Brothers - Voodoo People - Acid? Dub? Trip-hop? Many genres have tried to enclose former college students Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, from the beginning of their outfit, formerly known as The Dust Brothers, although not to be confused with the real Dust Brothers. The Chem's were forced to change their name once they hit it big.
**CJ Bolland - No Good Start The Dance - Ambient-dance DJ who has also remixed for Utah Saints. CJ came into some trouble with the Prodigy themselves in 1996. Having released his first major single, Sugar Is Sweeter, it was Liam and others who couldn't help noticing that it sounded very familiar to the Prodigy's own Poison. This caused Maxim to hurl abuse at the name of CJ Bolland whenever the band played Poison during their 96 tour!
**Empirion - Firestarter - The brainchild of techno DJ Jamie Smart, who formed the band with two others on their own record label - Wanted Records. Does all their music sound like the Firestarter remix they did? I contacted Jamie Smart, and here's what he had to say:
"I would like to think our album is has a bit of a cross section of electronic beats and sounds not just like the Firestarter mix, which is a top mix if you don't mind me saying so myself, anyway be lucky keep it loud. Jamie Smart (Empirion)"
The band also have remixed for Terrorvision, China Drum and many others. They are on the internet, check out http://www.wanted.demon.co.uk
**Environmental Science - Poison - Dub remixers from London, now signed to 'Big Beat' label Skint.
**Jonny L - One Love - One man techno remixer Jonny L's style can be described as that of the German techno scene.
Jonny L is currently a labelmate of the Prodigy, having released a few singles through XL Recordings. He has also remixed for The Urban Cookie Collective.
**Genaside II - Jericho - South London jungle pioneers who come from a rough background, can claim to be the first ever act to remix the Prodigy. Their remix of Experience opener Jericho became a B-side on the Fire single.
Liam once claimed that they were the first ever jungle act, a claim which they strongly deny.
Genaside II are still making records and have remixed for Soul II Soul.
**Top Buzz - Weather Experience - DJ Top Buzz kept up a following by doing many of the circuits when the rave scene was healthy.
B. Gizz's band - Prodigy's live guitarist Gizz Butt has his own band, which he has been fronting before joining the Prodigy. They play hardcore punk music, although not in an American style like Bad Religion or Pennywise. Two other members of the band are called
Pinch and Shop, strangely enough!
Janus Stark - Gizz Butt's punk band have been recently renamed Janus Stark, after a 70s cult cartoon character. A new album is expected later in the year. Gizz is currently 'doing battle' with a London band who are also using the name Janus Stark. Lawyers are sorting out the problem.
English Dogs? - The band were formerly known as The English Dogs, although the name-change had to go ahead, as Gizz was having problems getting 'English Dogs' registered in time for their new album because of archaic British law, which dictates that the Queen must adjudicate any name with the word 'English' in it, to be registered.
VIII. Merchandise - A full colour catalogue of Prodigy merchandise is available, usually annually, to those on the Prodigy merchandise mailing list. To get yourself on the list, send your name and address to:
Prodigy Merchandise Ltd.,
P.O. Box 2292,
BRAINTREE,
Essex,
CM7 9JE
UNITED KINGDOM
A fully working on-line service (payment via credit/debit card) is expected to be launched on the official site shortly.
A. Videos - The Prodigy have only released one videotape for domestic use, it's called Electronic Punks, released in 95, and features all the promo videos from the Experience and Jilted eras (except for Fire, because "the video sucks"), live tracks, the making of
the promo video for Poison, plenty of stupid home-video footage of them clowning around and some wierd polaroid photos. Where can I get Electronic Punks? In the UK: You can order it from any HMV. Many stores of Virgin, HMV, Tower or Our Price usually stock it. Other than UK: It is available in NTSC format from http://www.cdnow.com
B. Books - There are currently 6 different books on The Prodigy in existence.
**Electronic Punks - Martin Roach - Independent Music Press - Official - Order form inside Poison CD inlay
**Exit The Underground (2 of these... Original or revised)- Lisa Verrico - Virgin Books - Unofficial - In large Virgin/HMV stores
**Firestarters - John Keaton - UFO Music Ltd - Unofficial - rare, in some HMV stores
**The Fat Of The Land - The Prodigy - Independent Music Press - Official - In many Virgin/HMV stores, also from Prodigy Merchandise
**Adventures With The Voodoo Crew - Martin James - Ebury Press - Unofficial - In many Virgin/HMV stores
IX. Prodigy on the net - Liam and Keith both slammed the internet and modern technology in an interview with MTV Europe in 1995, as they are anti-futuristic. Keith has gone as far as to say he would use an abacus just to piss people off. They certainly don't write web-sites or have e-mail addresses. They are aware of the Prodigy Underground Archive.
A. WWW Sites -
**The official site(s) -
Check out http://www.prodigy.co.uk . They have also set up mirror sites at http://www.theprodigy.co.uk and http://www.theprodigy.com.
XL Recordings, the Prodigy's native record label have recently set up their own web-site at http://www.xl-recordings.com
The Prodigy's American licensee, Maverick Records, have a web-site at http://www.maverickent.com
**Unofficial 'fan-sites' - There's loads of unofficial ones about, thanks to us fans! They're definitely worth visiting! (Check links - http://www.ubl.com and http://www.yahoo.com )
Be careful when searching on search engines. Remember that there is an internet provider in America called Prodigy, so make your search specific!
B. Newsgroups - Nearly all usenet servers carry alt.music.prodigy-the, regarded as the prime newsgroup for Prodigy information. This was started by Rafael Ackermann in July 1995. Virtually all the latest news, rumours and gossip are discussed here.
Since then, someone, unwisely decided to create alt.music.prodigy-the.lyrics - a newsgroup devoted to discussing the lyrics of The Prodigy, probably the most stupidest thing in the alt.music hierachy. Unsurprisingly, it isn't used much, and is a target for
spammers.
****************************DO'S AND DON'TS************************
******************************READ THESE***************************
Although Prodigy fans usually hold anti-censorship/pro-free-speech views, there is a certain rule of commonsense where you cannot just do as you please. There are certain things on the alt.music.prodigy-the newsgroup that we advise you not to do...
DO NOT: post binaries to the group. The newsgroup is text only - the word 'binaries' does not appear anywhere in the title, so please upload your binary to some ftpspace/webspace and give out the revalent http: or ftp: URL in a text post. That way, people can decide whether they want your file, rather than having to sit through minutes of precious download time, or even having to wade through a load of text that goes: 8932UR8DE23YW7W32U7RDYDQWJD...
Sending files to any text newsgroup is selfish, and can cause that newsgroup to be removed from some news-servers.
Even 'small' binary files have the same effect. See the General USENET FAQs for more details.
DO NOT: post a "Prodigy rules!!!" type message! The simple reason is - WE KNOW.
DO NOT: spam us. Most spams are removed by a special bot anyway.
DO NOT: respond to obvious troll-bait. If a coward has posted an anonymous message that strongly annoys you, make a complaint to the re-mailer service - find their details in the header of the anonymous post.
DO NOT: quote private e-mails, unless you have permission.
DO NOT: ask any question that has been mentioned in this FAQ! (Unless you want a more specific answer, of course)
***Abbreviations***
The 'regulars' of the newsgroup tend to use abbrevations, for bandwidth's sake (or pure lazyness -Swift). See below for a guide.

Jilted = Music For The Jilted Generation, the second album.
FOTL = The Fat Of The Land, the third album.
WEL = What Evil Lurks EP.
EITP = Everybody In The Place.
OOS = Out Of Space.
WIU = Wind It Up - used for either the (Rewound) single or Experience track.

Ah, so that's where I read that. See that Smitty? Albeit probly outdated
by now.

No need to point it out to Smitty. We've both spoken to one of the
guys of that small electronic dance outfit. Not heard from him in
ages, but then he is rather reclusive. I'll leave it at that.

Exactly... its like that analogy Pete gives about teaching the guy how to

"The sampler is my instrument" - Liam Howlett
Or possibly put the newbie stuff at the start. It seems to be the norm for a
FAQ to put the technical Internet stuff (e.g. netiquette, Internet resources,
etc.) at the beginning, then go on to the real stuff later, just like the
Echoes FAQ for the amp-f ng.

That's actually a much better idea - could that one be considered, DJ Swift?

Try once a week, with the rate of flame threads and hate mail this NG has...
Great initiative swift, I remember there was a discussion about this a few months ago.
Should be posted on a regular basis to the NG, like once a month or so.

If it was posted once a month I think some of it would decrease.

>If it was posted once a month I think some of it would decrease.
And once a week would decrease even more...
But then you'll get idiots posting messages about 'how such large posts are
being made all the time and it's just repeating the same thing over and over
and blah blah blah...'
Monthly is good. If necessary, post a mini-faq weekly.

Chris
However, there's just no helping some people... :)
How about bi-weekly then...
And on another note, I've been using alt.test to try and figure out these
margins... Ive used "Read File" and simply cutting and pasting and its fucked
everytime... unless there's another way you guys can show me (wink wink), the
word wrapping will be kinda screwed and cutting off in the middle of words...
mabye, "oh well?"
