I just want to say that his solo during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on
Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps was f'ing amazing. I just watched
the footage with the usual "Please Prince, don't embarrass us fans"
skepticism and while his presenters were terrible (Keys wasn't too bad), his
opening act was great and the work with Winwood, Petty, Lynne and company
was off the charts. It was as if he was born to solo in that song. You could
see the others - particularly Harrison's son and Petty - stop swaying gently
back and forth as they had for the previous three minutes and really get
into what Prince was doing.

Prince may not be capable of even composing what would have been outtakes 15
years ago anymore, but he absolutely still rules live. I'd give anything for
him to do a real rock album where he lets loose on guitar like he hasn't
done since PR (and not a crappy "take this, Warner Brothers" Chaos and
Disorder-type album). One in which a competent producer and great musicians
(like Petty and Winwood, for example) work with him and yes, compose with
him. And since his recent forays into pseudo-jazz have proved fruitless if
not utterly pointless, I'd give anything else to get a rockin' blues album
from him too!

The toughest thing for fans of an ageing pop star to get over is that their
hero can't turn out memorable material any more (that and the ageless
his/her material is "ten times better than all that crap they're putting out
these days" (remember when Beatles/Stones fans said that while Prince was on
top? Some things never change and are instead passed on from generation to
generation)). Unless they die young it happens to all of them. At least P is
still at the top of his game live and has never *sounded* better live.

Let's hope this tour is properly captured on DVD for us to enjoy five years
from now when he's still trying to imitate the latest urban teenager at age
50 while becoming as relevant as Little Richard (who managed to achieve
"legendary" status with zero top five pop hits and just a few top 40 hits
from 1956-1958).

What are you talking about? He can't compose what would be outtakes years
ago? Come on, man. :)

This is the biggest misconception there is in Prince-fan-land. Go listen to
Come, TGE, and Emancipation and tell me there aren't great songs on those
albums. And The Truth, The Rainbow Children, Musicology. I think Prince's
fan base is so scattered (rock, r&b fans) that he couldn't please everyone
no matter what he did. But that's just my opinion, yorus may be different.

i personally consider the symbol album to be the last of his 'peak'
period (even tho it wasn't one of his best efforts..), a period from
like 1980-1992 when he was considered a thriving talent, 'come' if
memory serves came out in 1994, only 2 years after his peak..

we're now talking about 12 years later, emancipation came out what, 7
years ago? i agree there was some good stuff on there, but that's the
last album i really have respect for.. i honestly can't even sit thru
an entire listen of the truth, rainbow children, musicology, chocolate
invasion, slaughterhouse, or anything else he's done since 'rave'.

i don't really see him trying to copy today's young urban stars.. if
anything i think he doesn't try to learn enough from them.. not saying
he should come out with usher impression, but at least inject some
younger blood in his music via producers, collaborators, etc.. i think
his biggest problem is being stuck in his own lil world, stubborness

TGE, The Truth and TRC (live that is) are great. Come has it's moments
but overall I find it not so great. Emancipation has a few sparkles
but it's too much of uninteresting songs and sound. Musicology, the
jury's still out. I find a lot of the songs sounding like he has done
them before, with the same sound. But I have to listen to it a bit
more. I was more impressed with TRC than this one, that one was
different, this one isn't,

In the 80's it was hard to find a bad song on his albums. Now its the other
way around. He always drops one great song on there, but you have to wade
through alot of average material to find it

Rhastus- "get a little alcohol in him and he turns back into Prince"
