Tragic....not particularly a fan of her music, but I did think she
tried to avoid all of the bullshit that hung over the careers of other
artists.....which was cool. Classy and cool Aaliyah was. No fucked up
lyrics, no feuds with other artists, etc., etc. So I did like her as a
person. Sad.

I don't understand this. To me, saying it's a waste of talent connotes that a
talented person engaged in self-destructive, reckless and/or potentially fatal
behavior. She died in a plane crash.

Before someone brings up the reported reason the plane went down ("too much
baggage"), this doesn't mean that she was the one who told the pilot to go
ahead with the flight. And if he had been taking the orders of any passenger
then it's the pilot's fault, but I also have to qualify that statement with the
fact that I've NEVER in my life heard of a plane crashing because of excess
baggage.

actually, too much luggage and how it was placed could effect an aircraft's center
of gravity.

It's a very small plane and excess baggage can certainly be a factor.

That's because flight crews tend to put safety regulations ahead of
prima-donna demands.

It's constant theme of christianity that "God" does "call" people to him.
Catholic prayers are certainly full of references to that..

My sentiments exactly...I never really bought her music but on the radio I
enjoyed her singles and her voice etc. She had some jams. On my bachelor
party-trip, after an afternoon and evening of drinks, laughs and tatoos we
stopped at the obligatory strip club albeit late late. As a "going away
present" to me, 12 strippers pulled me onstage and tied me up in a chair and
proceeded to dance around me, etc. etc. all to the tune of Aaliyahs remake of
Marvin Gayes' Got To Give It Up.....it was a surreal experience and I was
looking deperately for the hook up back then on who was singing it to purchase
that version. It wasnt until a few days or weeks maybe that I found out that
it was her who remade it. I said to myself, cool, now I know so when the
time is right I'll pick it up one day. You know how it is when you keep
meaning to get a certain record one day but you never do? Well I never bought
it etc and then today seing her little report and her special and the way
she spoke was just damn plain sad. And I feel kind of weird because I have
some functions to attend later and what am I supposed to say why Im not
being myself? "Because that Aaliyah singer died? "...hell yeah I will. I was
the one who called my uncouth(lol) friends when Versace and Princess Diana
died, both after nights of foolish fun behaviour ( "whos Versace?" "the
designer you damned unsophisticated people!!" am I the only one who is the
"sophisticated" friend while all others are simple minded picket fence folk?)
She seemed like a genuinely sweet girl for being in the business ( an yes I
know it could have all been for tv ) and she seemed so thankful for her
oppurtunities etc. Now if I ever get those jams she made etc it wont be the
same party type atmosphere. Next time I partying Im gonna say, "somebody
famous and cool is dying tonight......right now ( and thats not to say that
I dont thank god for good times anyways because when we are all laughing etc
somone else in the world is going through hell..just think of the terror of a
plane the plane crash knowing youre gonna die crash etc, getting beat,
etc.)....R.I.P Aaliyah..

<<Plane Crash Kills Singer Aaliyah, 8 Others
Investigators Comb Wreckage for Clues

By TIM AYLEN
.c The Associated Press

MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas (Aug. 26) - Investigators waded through smoldering
Bahamian swampland on Sunday, carting off sand-covered luggage and hunting for
an explanation for the plane crash that killed young R&B star Aaliyah and eight
others.

The Cessna carrying Aaliyah and her party plummeted to earth in perfect weather
Saturday afternoon soon after takeoff for Florida. A day later, investigators
had few answers about what could have caused the crash. Police Superintendent
Basil Rahming said only that one of the Cessna's engines ``apparently failed.''

Aaliyah, who at age 22 already had a Grammy nomination, a platinum album and
several high-profile acting credits under her belt, was killed instantly. Five
others on board also died at the scene, while three more died later of their
injuries, Rahming said.

A native of New York City and resident of Detroit, Aaliyah had deep roots in
the R&B community. Saturday's crash left fans, friends and collaborators in
mourning.

``She was like one of my daughters, she was one of the sweetest girls in the
world,'' said Grammy-winning producer, arranger and composer Quincy Jones.
``She vacationed with me and my family together in Fiji. I loved her and
respected her and I am absolutely devastated.''

Aaliyah and the others in her party had come to the Bahamas to shoot a music
video, authorities said. Their plane was bound for Opa-locka, Fla., in perfect
weather when it went down on Abaco Island, roughly 200 feet from the end of the
runway at Marsh Harbour airport.

On Sunday, the Cessna's nose section was lying about 20 yards from the rest of
the battered fuselage, and luggage and pieces of the plane were scattered
about, covered in sand.

Abaco Island Chief Councilor Silbert Mills said he was at the airport 100 miles
north of Nassau when the plane took off and then crashed. He said he helped
rescue the injured.

``I pulled one from the aircraft, and he was screaming,'' Mills said. ``He said
he was in a lot of pain.''

Rahming said the other passengers killed were Scott Gallian, 41; Keith Wallace,
49, of Los Angeles; Douglas Kratz, 28, a representative for Virgin Records, and
makeup artist Eric Foreman, 29, both of Hollywood, Calif.; Gina Smith, 29, also
of Hollywood; Anthony Dodd, 34, of Los Angeles; and Christopher Maldonado, 32,
of New Jersey. The plane's pilot, identified only as L. Maradel, also died.

The bodies were being taken to a funeral home in Nassau, where they were to be
kept for relatives to help identify them, U.S. embassy spokesman Brian Bachman
said. Some were badly burned in the crash, authorities said.

Virgin Records offered to pay for the relatives to come, Bachman said. He said
the Caribbean country's government had not yet asked for the assistance of U.S.
investigators, but still could do so.

The Cessna 402 was owned by Skystream, a company based in Pembroke Pines, Fla.,
said Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in
Atlanta. The company's telephone number was not listed, and company officials
could not immediately be reached for comment.

A spokeswoman for Wichita, Kan.-based Cessna, Marilyn Richwine, said she was
not aware of any safety problems with the twin-engine 402 model. The company
has not manufactured that model for about 12 to 15 years, she said.

Aaliyah was to begin shooting the video for ``Rock The Boat'' this month in
Miami, according to her Web site. It was not clear whether she filmed that
video while in the Bahamas.

Aaliyah's song ``Try Again'' earned her a Grammy nomination this year for best
female R&B vocalist. In 1996, she released her second album, and the single
``If Your Girl Only Knew'' went double platinum.

Aaliyah made her feature acting debut in last year's film ``Romeo Must Die''
and was signed on to appear in two sequels to the high-tech thriller ``The
Matrix.''

She was born Aaliyah Haughton on Jan. 16, 1979, in Brooklyn. She made her stage
debut as an orphan in a production of ``Annie'' at the age of 6. Her uncle was
married to soul singer Gladys Knight, who invited Aaliyah to perform with her
during a five-night stint in Las Vegas at age 11.

Aaliyah struck a licensing deal as a teen-ager after her uncle, Barry
Hankerson, formed Blackground Records.

She went gold with her debut album, ``Age Ain't Nothing But Number,'' in 1994 -
when she was 15 - and benefitted from working closely with hip-hop artist R.
Kelly.>>

misc ramblings about aaliyah`s death courtesy of alt.fan.howard stern
warning-not for the squeemish

God takes her but leaves us with Mariah Carey.

I'm crying like a goddamn woman right now. But not because Alaliya whoever
is dead but because I just found out that Jackass has been canceled

truely?
I was touched as well, she was just on the verge of saving the world, and
finding the cure for cancer...........and
now.................................this!

Yes, what a shame.
Can't wait for the headliners and legends show to debut on her on MSNBC. She
touched so many lives. It takes talent to make it on TRL. Ask Fred Durst.
One thing is good out of this though. It interupted the Gary Condit crap on
the news for 1 minute.

I hope Howard doesnt make fun of this too
> much. Was anyone else touched by this sad news?

Yeah, I'm beside myself.
Who the frig is Aaliyah?

Oh yeah i'm truly devasted. I'm fixing up a cocktail and some
perscription drugs right now because i cant take it. Give me a
fucking Break.

> Of course howard will make fun of it. Aaliyah was in Romeo Must Die
> and made some shitty R&B teen MTV crap music.

You can't deny she was one hot little piece of ass.

She was slated to
star in the Matrix 2 with Keanu Reeves. She was married to R Kelly
since 15, which means that R Kelly is a pedophile. But anyways.... she
was only 22 and probably left a beautiful corpse for the coroner, hope
he's not perverted!

Judging from what I have heard of plane crashes, she was probably in more
than one piece and not very pretty.

>She actually had some very good songs.

I can't wait for her next cd set to be released Monday entitled "Oh SHIT we're

My dad was reading an article about her last weekend in the paper and
I leaned over to him and said "She's going to be such a huge star".
By all accounts her latest album is great, she's (was? yikes) hot and
starring in Queen of the Damned and Matrix sequels. She had really
positioned herself perfectly, critical acclaim, street credibility and
alot of class. Goes to show when its your time, its your time. RIP

Actually, I did happen before the album came out, but it got leaked very early
on (at least here in Chicago) and shortly thereafter, they got it annuled. The
rumors, which were originally denied by all parties, including Barry Hankerson
(Kelly's manager at the time and her uncle) started here right after the first
single dropped, then gained steam nationwide a little while later. And the
rumors were ressurected due to some additional allegations of Kelly hanging out
at local high schools here a few months ago.
