Just like "Do Me Baby", Prince didn't give Wendy & Lisa writing credit for
"Purple Rain"..I just read their interview posted at the Prince Family
website..they admit they wrote it! They wrote Prince's most popular song!

Shaddap. They co-wrote the song and arranged the strings at the end. Just
because they were a positive influence of some of his most popular music
doesn't necessarilly mean they wrote it. Does James Brown deserve co-writing
credit for the arrangement of "Possessed" that Prince did during the PR
tour?!?! Fuck no.

Do you really not like it or is it just because it's so worn out? I mean, you
can't really prefer Jughead can you? :)

No, No, I don't like Juhead either....but its different kind of not liking. I
dislike Jughead on its merit....where Purple Rain just doesn't do anything 4
me.

I doubt they did more than contribute strings to it.
Purple Rain existed without the strings as early as '78.
A song can be written with just chords and lyrics.

Wendy & Lisa said about "Purple Rain", "We came to rehearsal with the melody
and the idea". Prince only credits himself for writing the song. I am so glad
that Wendy & Lisa are finally starting to talk about their experience with
Prince.

it is the only oldie he consistently plays, though, during every tour, every
show. this is his signature song, maybe even moreso than "When Doves Cry"
or "1999"

please forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't the track Purple Rain credited 2
Prince & the Revolution? do they want a new credit saying Prince, Wendy &
Lisa, & the Revolution? does it matter if they arranged & had some ideas 2
the song or not? I'm sure the majority of songs done under the P&
Revolution albums were originally brought 2 the table by him & he still
includes them in the credits except when he plays everything..............
this sounds REALLY ungrateful.......... he gave them nuff credit & nuff
props during those days.......... I'm sure Brown Mark came up with a few
bass riffs on his own without princes input ........ does he want an
individual credit as well?????? if the credits are Composed, Arranged,
Performed, Produced by Prince and the Revolution, that (to me) sounds like
including wendy & lisa..........don't get me wrong, I love those 2 but
everyone is so on their jock lately & so anti-prince that they wait for any
negative comment about P without hearing his side & they take it as the word
of God or something when someone else knocks him............ chill
ya'll...........as Bobby Z. said in Purple Rain, "we're still a band,
right?"

Technically, if u wanna go by the charts that P disregards so blatantly
isn't Batdance his biggest hit?? Didn't it get to #1 in the US and #2 in
the UK??? Maybe When Doves cry passed it everywhere else and I'm totally
wrong but didn't Doves only make it to #4 in the UK??? correct me if I'm
wrong as I'm sure u will... :-)

I dont agree that Purple Rain is TAFKAP's most popular song. Popular is going
by how many people like it and no one can define those kind of figures.

HOWEVER, Purple Rain is TAFKAP's most remembered and well known
song/album/film.

The Purple flame has been embrazened on his career ever since.

As for popular songs, he has too many! U cant define it as 1 song.

Are u dismissing Diamonds & Pearls, Lovesexy, Batman, Sign O' The Times etc
etc????????

However I do find that when I mention Purple Rain more people know it and
relate to it even if they are not big fans

When Doves Cry is his biggest, technically. It stayed at #1 for 5 straight
weeks in America. And I think it took only four weeks to reach #1. That's what
you call "rocketing up the charts". I don't know what it did in the UK.

words, he did NOT write it in 1978.

You're right and wrong. W&L are not talking about perfromance credit, they're
talking about songwriting credit. "Purple Rain" is credited at ASCAP as having
been written solely by Prince.

If Wendy and Lisa wrote Purple Rain... and Prince screwed them out of their
credit...
wouldn't there have been a lawsuit when it rocketed to worldwide fame in '83!?!
If not '83 wouldn't they have sued in '86 when P canned them?
PR royalties have to be worth a ton of cash.

I'm betting that they contributed heavily to many Prince songs under a
work-for-hire
type deal. In which case all royalties and songwriting credit would go to
Prince.

THANK YOU!!! I've thought that for years. I always felt that the lyrics of
PR were quite sub-standard compared to most of his output during that time.

(Of course, come to think of it that same idea applies to much of Wendy
& Lisa's first album. Great muzac, stoopid lyrics.)

Now I didn't read that interview BUT.. I think what they meant was
that THEY came up with the melody and then P liked it and ran with it
yet didn't give them any credit for concieving the idea, which would
be considered writing it if the somgh was NOT changed dramatically.

a ten year contract.

A long time ago, they sort of danced around the question before
saying, quietly, yeah. This isn't the first time its come up. (No,

True. Uptown #33, among other places, cites a number of instances
in which W&L were concerned primarily with the music being the
best it could be, and mentions that they were able to contribute more
than anyone else *precisely* because they were willing to let him have
all the credit. And, being women, they figured they intimidated him less.
I personally think the latter comes out of a very 80s mentality, but
that doesn't mean it wasn't true in the mechanics of it . . .
