Love the album, kick ass music... BUT what's up with "oh-ho-ho, in the
name of the father, in the name of the son... oh-ho-ho, we gotta come
together, together as one..." MAN, that is SUPER CHEESY! Reminds me
of the chorus of Graffiti Bridge... It's really too bad, because
there are some real kick ass drums and guitar in the rest of this song
on The Rainbow Children -- why spoil it with that terrible chorus?

Overall, The Rainbow Children is a good album in my ears: lot of great
stuff to listen to, but there is nothing that stands out to me as
commercially viable for a possible comeback. Every song has some
really cool bits, but none of the songs as a *whole* stand out to me
as very powerful. It's a real shame.

Sorry, didn't mean to spoil anybody's listening fun -- and I can
assure you that I love listening to this album -- but I'm giving up
any hope for a strong Prince comeback in the remainder of his career.
Compare him to Lenny Kravitz, for example: Lenny kicks total ass and
looks fantastic and is all over MTV and VH-1.

I think Prince is quite out of touch with what is going on around him.
He is too much in his own world. He's no longer able to take a step
back and take a fresh approach. For too long he has known what works
well for him, and he just keeps doing that.

Still, that doesn't keep my from blasting The Rainbow Children really
loud in my office (at least for now).

LOL... those of us who see the reality of things realized that Prince's chance
of a comeback ended around 1994....

It is not supposed to be a comeback, but a stepping stone.

What I meant was that it is a stepping stone for a "return to form."

Prince has NEVER been in touch with what is going on around him. While
the world was moving in one direction, that brotha was wearing lace and
high heel boots. Remember Billy Sparks' line in Purple Rain (and yes, I
know that the movie was only semi-autobiographical)--"You can't use the
stage for your own personal shit." Who the hell was Nikki? Computer
Blue in 84-85? NOBODY had computers, 'cept for Commodore 64s and those
sorry Ataris... There's always been an element of Prince's music that
NOBODY else knew the phuck about... going down to Alphabet St??? Put
the right letters together??? Goin to Tennessee??? (At least Arrested
Development got a good sample and title for their song.) Christopher
Tracy's parade? What was up with that French Riviera ish? Sometimes It
Snows In April--Tracy was a friend of mine? Who was he singing about?
Himself? Another man? Another man who was himself? If I was your
girlfriend? whaaaat?!?!?

It seems like Prince messes up most when he tries to go too far away
from himself... his forays into hip hop have been down right
embarrassing. Glad he decided to leave that ish alone. Perhaps all
these neosoul cats who worship the ground he walks on finally awakened
him to his own quirky creative genius which he has musically unleashed
with The Rainbow Children.

And hey, I ain't too upset with the lyrics... It's cool to come together
in the name of the father and the son... some of us get tired of
"masturbatin with magazines" in hotel lobbies.

I've noticed that being commercially viable is REAL important to many of you
who claim to just want quality music.

>Compare him to Lenny Kravitz, for example: Lenny kicks total ass and

And we all know that looking fantastic can only enhance the music. Mtv and
VH1(to a lesser extent), storm troopers of quality, they are.

Please, but OKAY',.;.

I must say that it is a real controversy that I, as an atheist, do like
Prince's spiritual/religious material a little bit more than the rest of
his material. This is in general, i mean Graffiti Bridge (the songs) and
the Holy River are, in my opinion one of his most UGLIEST songs ever and
the Graffiti Bridge movie should be forbidden :-).

BTW: I heard The Rainbow Children now at least 7 times and i must say
that i do not want to skip tracks (incl the narrator), yes i still want
to shoot the lyrics (but laughing when i hear NATOTAN > how can a artist
loose his mind :-) ). Musical, DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!

The Rainbow Children is the most interesting record Prince made since
LoveSexy. I'm happy i didn't loose faith in his abilities to make ground
making music.

Peace,

i agree with most of that. as an athesit, most of my favorite pricne songs
are spiritual/religious. though TRC has many a track that i skip.and i
crings during the chorus of last december.htough i love the song. not all
of htis album is religious...but even most of hte nonreligious is corny as
fuck during hte narration...or some kind of separatist bullshit.

They way America is feeling right now, I thought he might actually be
able to get away with it. People NEED that shit right now. You could
pull out lots of lyric references in this album that could rub the
wrong way though.

As far as the album goes, the most pleasing thing about it is that he
sounds like himself again BUT DIFFERENT and not some r n b/hip hop
lite. Also theres a good sense of humor in the album as well.

I could say "He should do ___!!" But I really couldn't have asked for
more from this album. Its thoughtful, simple and catchy, full of
beautiful melodies, but theres a lot of complexity in the detail as
well. I guess the only thing that I would wish is that he plays the
hell out of it live. If he could create a live show centred around
this album it would truly blow everyone away.

The first time I heard "She loves me 4 me" I thought that it was an
obvious choice. Your point is taken though.

Lenny gets a hit from basically ripping off "Wherever you go", and
putting Gina Gershon in the video. Don't get me wrong, I actually
like Lenny but he's probably the least interesting or talented of the
people riding Prince.

Lord, I thought that that was EXACTLY what Prince had done with this
album. Maybe I'm too easily pleased. Its absolutely several steps in
the right direction.

this song is pretty much a rewrite of "welcome 2 the dawn." it's not a
classic, but i think it works well to close the album.

the songs are much sketchier--that is, many of them don't have choruses or
big hooks or other defining characteristics that make for a traditional song
structure. i really don't mind this, and there are plenty of other albums
like there's a riot going on and voodoo that are largely comprised of
similarly "formless" tunes that are widely acknowledged to be great works.
what the rainbow children lacks, as you mentioned, is one or two killer
classic tunes. there's no "family affair" or "untitled (how does it feel)"
here.

> Sorry, didn't mean to spoil anybody's listening fun -- and I can

bah. who cares. prince will most likely be a semi-cult (no pun intended)
artist for most of the rest of his career, and quite frankly i don't need
the "validation" of millions of the average music buying public agreeing
with my musical tastes to enjoy prince's music. why should i care if the
same folks who have made temporary stars out of hacks like matchbox 20 and
uncle kracker don't put their stamp of lemming-like approval on prince's
music? see, the sooner he accepts his status as a cult artist and stops
trying to kowtow to the mainstream, the more daring and adventurous his
music will be. the rainbow children is most definitely a leap in that
direction.

whether or not you think the rainbow children is a good album, you'd have to
be deaf to miss the fact that it is a fresh approach for him to music.

> Still, that doesn't keep my from blasting The Rainbow Children really

careful. prolonged exposure to even comforably loud levels of music can
cause permanent hearing damage.

Silly silly Aero.

Know how old Fiona Apple is? That bitch sho aint havin a comeback.

Neither is Bobby Brown.

Or NKOTB.

Or Color Me Badd.

Or The Funky Bunch.

Or Wilson Phillipps.

Or Debbie Gibson.

All groups/soloists that were really popular at one point. They are all still
young, but they are all NEVER having a pop comeback.

Neither is Prince.

Prince is on an entirely different level as those acts you just named.
Debbie Gibson did Electric Youth. Prince did Adore. You just cannot
compare his catalog with that of NKOTB... dammit! He's the real thing, and
the real thing can always get up if it wants to.

Wanna bet?

When was Tina Turner's last hit? Rolling Stones'? Bob Dylan? BRUCE MUHFUGGIN
SPRINGSTEEN?

Bob Dylan is hot - he came back at least four times already. His last album
got rave reviews. The Rolling Stones came back in the mid-nineties with a
very successful album and tour. Tina Turner had a comeback of sort last
year, not to mention the fact she had the ultimate comeback in 1984. Bruce
Springsteen isn't exactly down and out -- some of his last few tours had
great reviews...

If you mean that comeback is "having a top ten hit", that's a very limited
definition. Elvis Costello did not have a huge hit, but still came back in
a major way two years ago....

Ok, if a top ten hit isnt a comeback then what is Prince coming back from? He
got major exposure for Rave and Emancipation was a hit. He doesn't need to come
back from anything.

Obviously, the best is having hits and critical acclaim. But some artists
have the right mixture of acclaim and more than decent sales, while not
having hits. I don't think Rave had decent sales, not for an album with
clear commercial ambitions.

No, Rave didn't have great sales. Yet alot of the reviews were positive.
(Tongue in cheek, perhaps.) So you haven't explained to me what he is coming
back from. If a comeback doesn't mean a hit, but a comeback doesn't mean rave
reviews (pardon the pun), then exactly what are we talking about?

My definition of a comeback is a number one hit. Prince hasn't had one of those
since 1991 and hasn't had anything close sing 1994.

I then was trying to empathize with you and look at it at a different angle
(which is why I brought up Emancipation and Rave, since you didnt think top ten
hits were indicative of a comeback).

My point is that he doesn't need to make a comeback because he hasn't gone

I agree with your point. Prince's greatest comeback, to me, would be an
artistic one. I don't give a flying red monkey's #$% about the Mtv
teenybopperfest that some want him to be included in so bad.

Ya'll aren't paying attention.

No where did I say Prince wouldn't have a comeback because he was too old, too
retro, too ANYTHING. I said his CHANCES of a COMEBACK ended in 1994, he's not
RELEVANT to the charts anymore. But then again he doesn't NEED a comeback
because he is already a MAINSTAY in the INDUSTRY, just not on the CHARTS. Why
is no one understanding this?

Tina never left long enough to have a comeback. Unlike Prince, she waits a
couple of years between albums so people don't get tired of her.

Her "comeback" could've been defined around 1983/84 w/ the "Let's Stay
Together" single which was HUGE in Europe, especially Amsterdam (watch the
Wildest Dreams concert for details on that). The ensuing Private Dancer
album, which housed that song, was made huge on this side of the pond by
"What's Love Got To Do With It", and her subsequent appearance on the MTV
Awards that year, as well as her video for the song.

The TwentyFourSeven album from a year or two ago was great, as was the tour
(got the DVD). "When The Heartache Is Over" was all over the radio from the
TwentyFourSeven CD. You should watch the concert video, One Last Time, if
for no other reason than to see her perform "I Heard It Through The
Grapevine". GOOD GOD! Tina rocks my world everytime.

Dylan has a song that's been out for a while (he performed it on some award
show a while back) and is on the radio all over as well. The Stones just
put out music because that's what the do. They tour and make megabucks from
it, throw out a VHS or something, and people will buy it because they're The
Rolling Stones. Bruce is just a has been at this point.

Lenny Kravitz is not cool. He is just OK. He is far from thr musicianship
shown by Prince and ha never written at least one original song in his
career. He has not created a style or anything he will be remembered for.
Prince is simply in a different league I am afraid..
TRC does not contain hits uh big deal Bitches Brew neither!

Absolutely. But I think most people's definition of "comeback" isn't having
a number 1 hit. It could be in the case of someone like MJ or anyone who
has clear commercial ambitions, like Prince did with Rave. But in most
cases, the "comeback" is simply a return to form that gets some decent sales
and puts the person back in the spotlight.. in a positive way, of course. .

He won Oscar for the song "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys
Soundtrack. That was a year ago. His new album, Love and Theft, was released
last month and has recieved rave reviews, including a 5-star in Rolling Stone.

They're albums usually level off at 2 mil here in the States. Jagger's 4th solo
album is on the way in November.

Why can't Belgians have any national pride? You're being anti-belgian, and
I'll have to report to the chair of the Unbelgian Committee, Mr. J. Van
Macharten.

LOL--I dont 'demand" them I only let people know whe they have done wrong
unwarantedly to me and what they have done needs to be taken care of
dilegently and respectfully..an apolgy is usually sufficient. It is quick and
easy and leaves no yellow waxy build-up.
