John Nelson, the father of pop icon Prince and an accomplished jazz musician
in his own right, died Saturday morning at his home in Chanhassen. He was
85.
Nelson was the model for a key figure in "Purple Rain," the 1984 movie that
catapulted Minneapolis native Prince to international stardom. He
alsoco-wrote songs on several of his son's hit albums. In the 1950s, he
worked as a plaster molder at Honeywell and as a pianist in the jazz group
Prince Rogers Trio. Mattie Shaw was the singer, but she quit after marrying
Nelson.
In 1958, they named their son Prince Roger Nelson.
In the early 1980s, in one of the few in-depth interviews he gave, Prince
talked about a tormented childhood with parents who fought. Of her 13-year
marriage to John Nelson, Mattie told the Star Tribune in 1984: "I think [we
had] the normal disagreements." Asked once by the Star Tribune whether the
film "Purple Rain" accurately depicted him, Nelson said he never used a gun
like the father character.
Nelson left the household when Prince was about 10 and his sister Tyka was
8. After his mother remarried, Prince didn't get along with his stepfather,
so he went to live for a time with his father. Then he lived with an aunt
and later a friend's family. Prince admired his father's talents but was
frustrated by his inability to get along with him, said producer and
engineer Tommy Vicari, who became sort of a big brother to Prince during the
recording of his first album in 1977. After some success in the music
business, Prince reconciled with his father, who co-wrote songs on several
albums -- "Computer Blue" on the Oscar-and Grammy-winning "Purple Rain,"
"The Ladder" on 1985's "Around the World in a Day"; "Christopher Tracy's
Parade" and "Under the Cherry Moon" on 1986's "Parade," and "Scandalous" on
the 1989's "Batman" soundtrack.
For the past several years, Nelson lived in the purple house in Chanhassen
where Prince once lived. (Prince had moved to another house in Chanhassen).
Prince made sure that his father dressed in style, providing tailored
outfits from his wardrobe department. Nelson reportedly appeared at "Prince:
A Celebration" in June at his son's Paisley Park studios in Chanhassen.
Memorial information was not available Monday night.

Act right people. Have respect for life and death.
I know folks are waiting for their next NPGMC fix (I know I am) but can you
exercise some patience in light of this? If I were Prince and my pops just
died the LAST thing on my mind would be delivering NPGMC files...
Peace to Mr. Nelson, his friends, and family.

Not everyone is like me (thank fuck for that!) but when my dad died I got
emotionally messed up large style, partly due to the fact that my mother
died 3 months before he did.
I still have not gotten to grips with my old man's demise. I only have to
see a photo of him and I bust up. Not so with my ma though as I never felt
close to her at all.
If Prince reacts to his father's death the way I did, then I expect that
y'all can forget about the NPGMC and whatever goes with it.
I turned my back on stuff for a while, and am still examining my future at
the moment, and the way I feel right now, things are gonna change for me
quite drastically in the next ouple of years.
But thats just me............Bob

Nothing Can Stop Me Now...
Why even judge something like that? Family dynamics, which I'm sure you would
agree, are extremely complicated. Especially when you're (not you
specifically--anyone) on the outside looking in. We don't know the TOTAL extent
to what Prince's relationship with his father was (or the total extent of his
relationship with ANYONE else for that matter), because we're not part of his
family. I can tell you from personal experience that there are things that
happen in families that NOBODY could really and truly understand just by
hearing secondhand information about it. Things of that nature are so
complicated that you have to live through it with the same family to know 100%
the dynamics of it all.
All we know is what we hear secondhand. All we know is what Prince has or
hasn't said about it.
It's just so easy to be judgemental about the relationship, or
non-relationship. Prince isn't the first person to ever not get along with his
parent(s), and he won't be the last. The positive thing, from what I can
perceive, is that during Prince's adult life he eventually reconciled with his
father. At least to a good extent.
Are we all adult enough here where we can actually let up on the criticism of
Prince at this particular time in his life, or are ampers to their cores truly
a heartless bunch of motherfuckers?

Your buddy, Lee

My father died when I was 17... 17 years old... left my family with nothing,
and we had to claim bankruptacy.
It was at this time when I became completely insane. The feeling of despair,
anger, has never left.
And yet I'm dogged by you people here.
F you all. So what if Prince's dad died? He was _85_. Prince is in his mid
40's. He was able to provide his father with a great life. Prince had his
father around for a long, long time.
Suck it up, and move on. Don't be such a pussy.
Turn your back and join this DARKSIDE of life. We're like blood brothers man...
all the same!
Lets take out our frustrations on the lamestream...
I love harassing and beating up on mainstream people. Women, stupid families,
stupid parents that come into Electronics Boutique and ask "can you help me
find this game, called Pokey-Mon?" Dumbasses.
I really hate the mainstream. Women who try and look all pretty, dressing up to
go to the MALL.. i hate punkass white jocks, i hate punkass white people with
hot girlfriends, i hate stupid nigs who travel in packs thinking they are so
"down" because they like rap music, I hate gay people because they're mentally
sick and spreading disease, I hate this damn apartment, I hate Patricia for
saying she loved me and she was gonna move in and then she "changes her mind,"
I hate women that date guys who couldn't give a shit about them, while straight
up dope nigs like me sit home alone and wack off to the same pornos over and
over.
It's not right man. This is my place now, the darkside.
First Bono's dad. Then Aaliyah. And now Prince's dad.
I guess death does hit the entertainment industry in threes.
[though, two weren't necessarily "stars" per definition.]

Now thats some poetry!
unfortunately, some heartless motherfuckers are still whining about the npgmc
(or whatever the hell it's called). for you paying customers, i'd suggest you
practice a bit of patience. i'm sure the last thing on prince's mind is your
damn subscriptions.

It doesn't surprise me at all. And more than likely a lot of these people are
the same ones who've been burned by Prince's business practices over the past
few years, but will still shell out money for the short dude's ventures. A
glutton for punishment these people are. They're out to get all they can out of
Prince. Prince's father dying is no fuckin' excuse for him not to continue his
job AT THIS VERY MOMENT.
GET OVER IT and GET YOUR ASS BACK TO WORK PRINCE!!!!!!!
