i notice a big similarity between Portishead's "Glory Box" and Tricky's
"Hell is around the corner". they both seem to be using either identical
or very similar samples. the instrumental part of each song sounds
almost identical to me! anyone else notice this? or am i crazy?

they both use the same sample from an Isaac Hayes song, "Ike's Rap III."

Yes, now at last you can rest easy... you are crazy. And you are right,
both songs do indeed have the same sample in them. The sample is from
the Isaac Hayes song "Ike's Rap III". It seem that a lot of people have
been sampling his old stuff in the last couple of years. You should
check out Isaac Hayes's version of "Walk On By" against Hooverphonic's
"2Wicky", and Mono's "Silicone" for two other cool songs that have the
same samples in them. Also if you're really bored and looking for
something to do, you can read that super-tiny print on the CD booklet
that came with the CD, it'll tell you where they got the samples from.
That is unless someone is making tapes for you. Then you're just
screwed. Hee hee!

yeah you're right. i should have checked the sleeves that came with the
albums. they both credit that song for the sample. it's weird that they both
decided to use that sample though.

I love Isaac Hayes' "walk on by." But it's hard for me to find it in
Mono's "silicone." Is it the guitar wah that pops up in the background?
Or is it more than that?

To me it sounds like the "Walk On By" sample starts at 21 seconds into
"Silicone". You hear a quick drum fill, one bass note, a little wah
guitar part, and then the vocals start. It's over in about two seconds,
so I can understand how you'd miss it. They (Mono) also sped up the
sample, probably EQ'd it a little, and then added their own bassline to
it (which in effect covers up the original bass note). Listen to the
intro to Hooverphonic's "2Wicky" (or go back to Chef's... er, um, I mean
Isaac's version of "Walk On By") to hear the real difference in those
sample speeds. Hope this helps a little.

You're right. I'd originally caught that drum fill, and I do think that
the wah guitar bit is a pick-up, as well. But I didn't realize the
higher pitch. I've never heard any of Hooverphonic, but I'll give their
sound a sample at Amazom.com.

Although, RealPlayer samples don't do much justice to the music. But on
the other hand, I discovered Mono and Esthero at Amazon.com, after
following some of the reccommendations on this newsgroup. Amazon is
actually a great place to shop for music.

I was looking for a track, I thought something familiar, then I found the second track, then you were knocked out in the search, and it turns out that you wrote in Google already in 1999. It's incredible. Hello everyone from the future, are you alive there? xD
