Justin Bieber's latest boo-boo in Latin America could be a lesson to
remember for all: Stay off the ancient ruins.
After the Canadian pop star's latest display of either a) cluelessness or
b) disrespectful behavior, Bieber was booted Thursday from one of Mexico's
premier archaeological sites, the ancient city of Tulum on the coast of
the Yucatan Peninsula, according to the Associated Press and British and
Mexican media reports.
His mistake: He was climbing around in the architectural ruins, despite
signs forbidding it and despite warnings from security guards.
Maybe he didn't understand enough Spanish but after first getting down, he
clambered around in the ruins again, the reports said. Bad move.
An argument ensued. The guards called police, but by the time the cops
showed up, the argument was over and Bieber and his party were escorted
from the site, according to what local reporters were told by Adriana
Velázquez of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History,
which oversees the country's rich collection of pre-Columbian
archaeological and historical sites.
Bieber has been on vacation with friends for the past week on the Yucatan
Peninsula, as his Instagram page has shown. He's been snorkeling, golfing,
playing with dolphins and generally having a great time hanging out on
some of the Yucatan's prized beaches.
Tulum is one of the most popular sites for tourists thanks to its location
just down the eastern coast of the Yucatan from Cancun. The ruins of the
800-year-old Maya walled city are both haunting and spectacular, with a
spectacular view of the Caribbean.
But it's not impervious to the ravages of time and the jungle, so best not
to touch. In fact, Mexico generally bars climbing at its archaeological
sites, with a major exception being the pyramids of Teotihuacán 30 miles
north of Mexico City.
It didn't help that Bieber has stumbled before while on tour in Latin
America in 2013.
In Mexico, he tweeted at one point that he met with the president, even
though he hadn't.
In Argentina, he was accused of offending by dragging the national flag
around on stage and had to tweet apologies. He also ticked off fans by
quitting a concert after less than an hour because he got food poisoning.
A photographer accused Bieber of ordering his bodyguards to attack him
outside a Buenos Aires hotel, and in 2015, an Argentine judge issued a
warrant for the Bieb because he failed to respond to a summons for the
case.
In Brazil, he walked off stage after someone threw a plastic bottle at
him, and was accused of defacing a public building with graffiti.
Still, Bieber recently went far to redeem himself in many eyes when he
urged his fans in Britain to support a local choir's Christmas single,
instead of his own single, in the annual national song competition, to
raise money for charity.
