Haunted House Polka - Wally Dombrowski & Tony Blazonczyk
Witch Polka - The Musical Knights
The Ghoul's Halloween Polka Party by Erick Traplin
Frankensteiner Polka by Mikenstein & Wolffman
In "German style" there is a hit polka song, "(Komm in Mein )
HEXENHAUS" ( Hexenhaus means the witch's house or haunted house --
There are several videos of it on youtube , one of which includes
great button box/band playing , while others depict the haunted house
with musical background . The lyrics are about a guy returning home
from a tavern : While walking thru the dark forest, he's approached by
a beautiful with , who lures him to her "Hexenhaus" --- The next
morning he wakes up and is glad he went with her : He says: "So eine
Hexe braucht jedermann" ---Every man needs a witch like like that to
do "good things" for him. ( There are also videos of a German heavy
metal number with the same title).
The Happy Harmony boys' old hit, "MAURICE," of course also has a
"spooky" theme, since it tells of a man betrayed by his lover, who
threatens to come back as a ghost and haunt her and her new love by
shouting and knocking on their bedroom door if they engage in "any
monkeyshines." ---The youtube video of this number , contributed by
"Squeezebox Verna" , may be the most "Halloween-like" of "Polish-
style" polka videos, since it actually shows ( Shudder!) a skeleton/
ghostlike wraith sweeping through the hall as the number is played in
a remote West Virginia mountain location... and I recall that this
"blast from the past" probably brought forth the greatest swarm of
shouting, stomping "spooks" ever aroused by a "scary" polka at an Erie
Days polka festival in the 80's , when dozens of ghostlike creatures
materialized , banging stakes on the floor and howling in unison when
"Maurice" ( the "spookiest" polka hit ever, I think ) was played. ---
A big crowd witnessed that other-worldly phenomenon at the time---I
wonder if anybody on this site was among them and remembers this...
As I write this, I'm getting ready to drive up to the wilds of
northern Connecticut ( on my way to the Ludlow PACC) and to hike
thru People's State forest, an area where "Maurice" is known to roam
(Those familiar with this region's polka scene know what I'm referring
to). If I make it to Ludlow after that treck, clearly I will have
survived. If not, then either the witch or "Maurice" will have gotten
me : Of course I'd rather be caught by "her" than by (aaaah!!) "him".
If I don't return ( and consequently am not heard from again on
this site) , it's been nice "knowing" you all---and I wish you a
"Happy Halloween."
PS : (SPOOKY) "Typo" alert : "In line 7 , para. 1, above "with" should
of course read W I T C H.....

AND "Ghost Train" off of the Polka Haunt Us CD -- I'm singing that
one...
And more "spooky," Halloween flavored recorded numbers for the
season:
I. Polish heritage numbers:
"Umarl Maciek, umarl" : About the "undead" Matt, who is laid out
dead on a plan but comes back to life and starts dancing whenever a
band plays.
" The Pretty girl polka" ( recorded by Happy Louie ), an old
Polish song/legend about the pretty Krakowianka who refuses to marry
the king and is (!!) --- decapitated.
"Four Miles from Warsaw" waltz ( recorded by the Versatones) , the
song about an evil forester who roams the woods killing ( literally!)
everyone he meets.
II. More recent numbers : The video of "Polka Playin' Fool"
produced by Dan Gury depicts various medieval tortures and other
"creepy" treatment being inflicted upon the poor "fool" ( minstrel ---
John Gora , as played by Danny Kaye) , who somehow apparently falls
into a time warp and is "spirited" back to the Middle Ages.
The various "Sarah Palin" polkas --There are three of these
online, all of which recount various nefarious doings of Ms P ( aka
"Scary Sarah") , who, from her famous Arctic lair with the view of
Russia , engages in a wide range of Halloween-like activities, ranging
from wolf-hunting and "Russian baiting" to plotting to seize power in
the US and the world , in order , i.a. ( as reported by the New York
Times and in countless articles online---Google "S.Palin +witchcraft
to confirm) to use political power to mount an worldwide attack on
witches and sorcerers -- Booooooh: Sometimes the truth ---and
current events-- are as eery and "Halloween-like" , if not even more
so, than the ancient songs, legends and traditions---and "polka",
surprisingly enough, reflects it all...
TYPO in line 5: "plan" should read "plank".
