I was just wondering-how tall is Phil? I've read that he says he is 5'
8" tall and then on a pop up video they said he was 5'6". It doesn't
matter to me either way-I was just curious. Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks,
Angela

I thought Mike was at least 6'2" -- it always seems people are remarking on his
height, anyway :-).

During the DITL tour, Phil went to see Lord of the Dance at the Rosemont
Theater (Phil was playing the Rosemont Horizon, just outside Chicago, the
following evening). I was sitting three seats behind him, on the aisle (which
didn't give me a clue as to his height, obviously, although I got a great view
of how a drummer taps his foot during Celtic music -- with far more enthusiasm
and intricacy than, let's say, myself).

However, during the intermission Phil and a few people from his row went to
the lobby. I was standing talking to the couple in the row behind me (about
that being Phil Collins ahead of us, actually). I would guess, from Phil's
brief walk past me (to and from the lobby) that he's about 5'7" or 8" (I'm 5'
7", and I did have to look up slightly -- then again, the theater is on a bit
of an incline down toward the stage). That's really not that short, when you
think about it.

Ah right, I always thought he was pretty small. I remember you talking
about this before, were you tipped off about his 'cameo' or was this
just a very lucky coincidence? And, will this luck rub off on me for
sharing a thread??? (Say 'yes')

Cheers,

Just coincidence. You could look at the DITL schedule and see there was an
open date that particular Saturday, and a lot of performers do, when they're in
the MIdwest, use Chicago as a hub city for those particular Midwest dates.
Still, there's a fair amount of things to do in Chicago on a Saturday evening,
so I didn't particularly expect to see any celebrities in the audience. I
never seem to have that luck -- I'm still jealous that a friend of mine ran
into George Clooney not once, not twice, but three times at restaurants when ER
was here filming exteriors recently.

I remember the couple next to me (we were in the fifth row) discussing why in
the world the entire second row center was vacant so close to show time (when
seats for Lord were impossible to get -- it was the first run through the
States, Chicago is Flatley's home town, and the Rosemont Theater was the
smallest venue he played that leg).

Then, house security escorted a group of people down the aisle just prior to
show time (I recognized Phil and Amy Keys right off the bat) -- we did sort of
wonder who was getting even nicer treatment than just us regular old patrons.
A buzz went up as the house lights went down, as people were saying "isn't
that...yes, I think so", but, as far as I could tell, everyone was pretty much
just leaving Phil's party alone. The guy behind me said that in the lobby
during intermission Phil et al just lined up for pop, bottled water, and wine
just like all the other audience members (again, with a lot of sideways glances
from other people around, but no one asking for autographs -- house security
was apparently keeping an eye out, but it was supposedly very non-intrusive).

From what I read later, that was the second time Phil saw Lord -- he saw it in
either NY or London, but I can't remember which right now. At one point, PC
was saying something about he and Flatley kicking some ideas around -- but I
suppose if any of us had a penny for every concept discussed that may or may
not ever become reality, we'd all be richer than Bill Gates.

Again, my guess was that he's around 5' 7" or so. From descriptions in
interviews, I'd always gotten the impression that Phil was quite a bit smaller
than that, so I was surprised that he was either my height or slightly taller.
I've certainly met a number of men shorter than Phil. He did seem relatively
fine-boned, though -- I wonder if that's where that oft-used adjective
'diminutive' comes from.

It's so hard to get a real idea of height from tv and movies, though, isn't it?
I mean, Tom Cruise never strikes me as being particularly small, but I've been
told he's quite short (as is Paul Newman, apparently). On the other hand, I'd
say neither of those gentlemen have much to worry about vis a vis the
perception of the female population -- and certainly both have extraordinary
spouses, IMO.
