Limited edition UK promo CD single of "Run Girl Run" by Billie Trix, a
fictional character who appears in the hit musical "Closer To Heaven" by the
Pet Shop Boys. Hugely collectable for any Pet Shop Boys fan. Billie Trix is a
faded starlet from the early 70s (based loosely on Nico of the Velvet
Underground), played in the original production by Frances Barber. The song was
referred to in the show but is not performed, other than a brief extract sung
by Billie Trix herself to remind a new-found friend of her previous stardom.
CD includes: Run Girl Run (Original 1971 single version); Run Girl Run (1981
post-apocalyptic nightmare mix). The first track is credited: "Produced by
Merlin Zoot (featuring Hank Quarshie on tambourine)". The second track is
credited: "Produced by Lenny Snatch". These are all pseudonyms for Neil Tennant
and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys.
The CD comes in a color card sleeve and features the following sleeve notes.
"Recorded in New York in the autumn of 1970, Run Girl Run became an
international hit for Billie Trix the following year. Conceived as a protest
againt the Vietnam war, its denunciation of both President Nixon and Chairman
Mao caused outrage and made Billie a household name. The mellotron-drenched
production and Billie's young, fragile vocals can still evoke those heady days
of protest.
Ten years later, Billie recorded a new version of Run Girl Run and a decade of
drug abuse is clearly audible in her deeper, darker voice. In 1981, Billie
emerged from obscurity by streaking naked (apart from turquoise body paint)
outside St Paul's Cathedral during the royal wedding. The exposure and her
involvement in the New Romantic club scene led her to winning a new recording
contract. This electronic reworking of her most famous song was her first
release for many years and a minor hit in her native Germany. She still
occasionally performs it in her role as a club host in London. It's hoped this
remastered re-release will bring Ms Trix to a new generation of listeners."
This biography is completely fictional and portrays the character from the
stage show. But Neil Tennant has written and produced the songs on this CD;
Frances Barber, who created the role of Billie Trix in the world premiere
production, is the singer. This CD was sold only to people visiting the London
theatre where the play was running. The show has now closed (October 13) and
the CD is now no longer available. It is not generally available in any store
and does not appear on the soundtrack album.
